How to add sprites to a character you're editing?

I was trying to add some new sprites into Shazzo's Mario but everytime I tried to the palette was just completely messed up. I tried to just correct with the palette editor but the image's palette wasn't even loaded into the editor. Then I tried forcing the palette already being used onto it but the palette didn't remove the BG color. Can anyone help out with this?

Did you try to "downgrade" the sff file by: "Saving as"  8 bit?
Maybe this can help, I dont know the char to help more... good luck!
