Welcome, King of Fighters fans, to the all-time King of Fighters discussion on Mugen Fighters' Guild, The Best of The King of Fighters seriees.

With SNK's top franchise trying to reach the top, The King of Fighters have garnered themselves their own fanbase as well as a very good fan service. Anyone who wants to discuss the best of The King of Fighters, come on down!

I added all the recent KOF games including the 3d versions and the Remakes and KOF Neowave

My personal 3 favourites are definitive KOF 2002, the remake, KOF XIII and KOF Maximum Impact 2.

As much as i would love to see KOF XIV starting a new saga (and getting made) i still would love to see KOF Maximum Impact 3. The story about Alba etc was not that bad, the gameplay of MI2 was good, the many missions and bonus games of the game, the long backstories about each character were awesome features.

The KOF series is truly outstanding in my opinion i would fucking hate it to see this series dying, i pray that SNKPlaymore will continue KOF

More seriously, '98 was the first KoF game I tried to play seriously, MI2 does have some kicking character design stuff except for Falcoon's foolishness (Xiao Lon so pretty), and KoF 13 is just damn good.

I put quite a bit of play in '98 and XI too. '99 was my first, and I have a warm spot for it.
IMO, MI2 would've been better if the balance and fighting system was more on par with some of the others.

I mean everybody involved in the main plot
+ Luise Meyrink and Jivatma snazzy looking aliens. My 2 favorite characters in the Post 98 era.
+ Alba and Soiree Meira being an active part of the South Town gangs AND Aliens.
+ Duke having a very strange relationship with Lien.
- Fuck Nagase and Mignon/Ninon Beart

To me, MI had a solid plot, completely not a rehash of an earlier plot like the Ash Saga was ("Dude, we should like totally revive Orochi, and make these old ass 97 characters relevant again"). It's a good thing that KOF XIII turned out so damn good after the introduction of such weak characters like the 2003 hero team. I would very much enjoy if SNKP finished the MI storyline, I liked that one better.

Do you guys remember the awesome KOF Another Day anime?

Duke, Lien,Luise, Alba and Soiree were all pretty cool characters for me as well, Ninon was semi okay..at least better than Mignon, and well nagase was at least an excuse to bring Hanzo into a KOF game as a bonus character

Beside that, the game was just fun to play, and is still now the only good SNK 3d fighting game for me

I AM THE KING OF PALETTES!!

It's hard for me to narrow down just three because I like this series so much, but I will.

-XIII. It really is the best in the series. KOF has come so far and with this game it really shows. It's still recognizable as KOF, but it's evolved so much that even people who normally wouldn't care for the series love this game.

-98 UM. Great roster, smooth controls, VASTLY improved over vanilla 98, wonderful presentation, so much strategy. This game is just great, and even if you're up against a Krauser/Geese/Iori team you can still pull out the win with the right skills.

-Maximum Impact 2/Regulation A. It's dumb, it's broken, I don't care, it's fun. The dial a combos and 3d movement is a really nice change of pace and is quite refreshing IMO. I really like how over the top this game is, it's like the Marvel of KOF games.

the whole costumes and "cosplay" thing in mi2 was damn cool, i really miss such things in modern fighting games, today it would all or nearly all be dlc instead of being unlockable

Have you played tekken 6 customization? its about six sets of costumes for each char. What Mi did was very interesting but I dont think thats something to spit at either. ( even though tekken 6 is missing one thing, SLOTS , I wanted to have more than 2 costumes saved )

+ yes, i played tekken 6 a lot hours and spend a bit time to the customization stuff as well, to create a super ugly panda as example and wonderful emo characters

i would speak slowly for you so you can understand it but since a board is text-based please just read slowly.

MI2 = many costumes for each of the around 40 characters based on other SNK characters
Tekken 6 = many custom items for each character to create all kinds of costumes, not based on other namco characters also just 2 slots

Tekken 6 = one of the very few fighting games released in the last years without costume dlc stuff.

Now lets talk bout kof again.

You can speak rapidly. and as long as harada is helming tekken, you wont be seeing that kind of stuff. I was just commenting on you saying that it would be dlc for extra clothes. Even kof 12 had alternate colour packs unlockable ( even if they sold the unlock as dlc as well for those who didnt want to play 50 times with a single char to unlock them )

Nothing ever ends

It's a tough choice, since there are so many games to like for so many different reasons, but I'm boiling it down to these:

- XI: used a more dynamic way to manage your team, letting you swap into a character that might fit your current opponent best, instead of creating a pause between losinng a character and getting to use a new one, forcing a specific order, not to mention it's a generally very solid game (the classic team system might feel a bit archaic in comparison, basically, and this game switched things around much better than the striker system of the NESTS games); I'm just not a fan of the Leader DM system and character swap combos; getting Silber back was cool too

- XIII: the one I've had the easiest time using combos in, loved the drive cancel system and the alternate properties of EX version of moves (although I kinda wish most would cost half a power bar instead, no big deal), yet at the higher end of combo skill it can be remarkably complex but rewarding (dem trials...), and this seems to have helped it earn respect among a lot of people who've usually ignored the series (EVO, 'nuff said); also, welcome back MR Karate!

- MI2: the fangasmic use of 3D assets is something I miss, between the alternate outfits, bonus games, music, characters getting moves they should have in-universe yet they lacked before (like Mai getting Kouhadan, which andy and Hokutomaru have) and lots of little things like that. It's sad to see that sub-series discontinued, even if I'd rather keep alien plots and Falcoon designs out of my KoF (Duke and Chae Lim were OK though).

A mix of the strenghts of these 3 (all of them plot games, btw, which is a strenght in my book) with a cast like 2k2um's (more May Lee would be welcome, for example) would bring us rather close to a perfect KoF.
