So now that SHADEs of Manhattan 3 is done (The Specialist is coming soon as an addition, but after that I'm calling it finished until I decide to add some more "DLC"), I've decided to work on a fun, personal project that I've wanted to do for years, and that's Shawn Spencer from one of my all-time favorite TV shows, Psych.

For those unfamiliar with Shawn or Psych, here's his backstory and some pics for reference.

Anyway, I've been a huge fan of the show since it began airing in 2006. If you're wondering how he might translate to a fighting game, well, his gameplay and moveset will be heavily inspired by Capcom's handling of Phoenix Wright in UMVC3.

Here are his first animations. His look is based mostly on his seasons 5-8 appearance:

Animations so far are based partially on Shen Woo and Kyosuke, with the stance being completely from scratch.

GAMEPLAY

While his moveset is far from finalized, here's what you can basically expect.

INVESTIGATION MODE

Shawn always starts in Investigation Mode (I.M.). In this mode, he needs to deduce three clues that will open the case for him. He needs to find two clues on the ground (ala Phoenix Wright), and one on the opponent (which will "hit" similar to Frank West's photography in the same game). This is based on how he zooms in on things in the show and uses his observational skills to make a deduction, then presents it as a psychic vision. This will be done with D+Start for the ground clues, and F+Start for the opponent clue (which can be blocked). Start by itself will be his normal taunt. He will also have access to the following special moves:

-Pineapple Toss - QCF+P - Shawn pulls out a pineapple and tosses it at the opponent in different arcs depending on the strength of button pressed

-Burton Guster - QCB+K - There will be three variations. In one, his partner Gus will run out to about half screen and attempt to shield Shawn from the opponent, so he can have time to find clues. There will also be a variation where Gus attempts to attack the opponent in some way (probably with his case full of Pharmaceuticals or maybe he'll trip and fall like Maya). Lastly, one version will be Gus running out with a plate of Quatros Quesos dos Fritos for Shawn to eat and regain some health.

-The Catch - QCB+P - Shawn pulls out a catcher's mask and mitt, adopting his superhero persona "The Catch," and uses the mitt to stop an incoming attack (standing and crouching only), which he then counters with a stiff shove that will a bunch of distance between him and his opponent.

-J'Accuse! - D,D+P - Once Shawn has all three clues, he can switch to Accusation Mode with this command

ACCUSATION MODE

In accusation Mode (A.M.), Shawn loses access to his special The Catch, keeps Pineapple Toss, and Burton Guster changes to Jules and Lassie. Also, all of his normals become a little stronger, the pineapples he tosses hit harder, and he gets a command normal and a new special.

-The Golden Sweetness - F+HP (command normal) - Shawn walks towards his opponent with a pineapple in his hand, asking if he should slice this up for the road. He will be gesturing with the pineapple in such a way that it hits repeatedly (like Phoenix Wright's "Pressing the Witness" special).

-Jack Tagging - DP+P - Shawn points his fingers and "Jack Tags" his opponent, which is when he addresses them as Jack at the end of a sentence (i.e. "Check the facts, Jack!" or "I'm a Psychic, Jack!"). What actually hits his opponent will be a voice bubble that says "Jack!" in it, similar to Phoenix Wright's Objection bubble.

-Jules and Lassie - QCB+K - Instead of Gus, since Shawn now has evidence of a crime, this summons Detective Juliet O'Hara (also Shawn's girlfriend) or Head Detective Carlton Lassiter. Jules rushes out and performs a shoulder tackle. Lassie aims his gun and fires twice for good damage.

-Wrong, Spencer! - D,D+P - Shawn will switch back to I.M. at the cost of one clue. You really only want to do this if you need to use Burton Guster for healing or if you want to use The Catch special again.

SUPER MOVES

-L1 - The Blueberry - Command TBD in I.M. or A.M. - Shawn jumps out of the way as Gus drives through the fight in his company vehicle that they affectionately call The Blueberry, striking the opponent and sending them flying.

-L1 - Another Super TBD - Haven't nailed anything down yet here but it will probably be an A.M. only Super

-L3 - Fake Psychic, Real Detective - Command TBD in A.M. only - Once Shawn has all three clues that he needs and has successfully "Jack Tagged" his opponent at least once, he can launch into his big reveal, where he corners the opponent with accusations and reveals that they committed a heinous crime. Pretty much exactly like Phoenix Wright's big L3 super in UMVC3.

OTHER STUFF

His intros and winposes will all be references to the show. For example, one of his main intros will be Shawn and Gus standing side by side, with Shawn introducing himself as Shawn Spencer, Psychic Detective, and then saying "this is my partner...", which will always be one of the funny nicknames he gives Gus on the show. This will be randomized and I will also try to include Gus' reaction. Then Gus will run off. This is a running gag on the show. In the spoiler is a video for reference:

I am very open to ideas and suggestions and I look forward to constructive feedback. I'll be posting sprite progress along the way. This is a passion project for me and I hope you guys enjoy it when he's done.

Wow. I had no idea of ​​the existence of the character or the series, but everything you bring up for the project sounds like a lot of fun. You have also managed to capture very well the real appearance to transfer it to your sprites.

If you were going for 4-buttons like SHADEs 3 and CvTW, the Clue stuff could be a seperate button instead of involving Start, sorta like the Traits and Supers in CvTW. Would likely be more convenient in terms of buttons.

Then put a big subtitle that "Note: Shawn's father is absolutely still alive."

Of all the characters I would have never expected to be turned into a MUGEN character, Shawn Spencer is up there.

Actually curious to see how this passion project of yours comes along, man.

Thanks, it took a long time and a ton of tweaks to finally be satisfied with the way his face looks. Also, you should check out the show, it's free on Amazon Prime. It's classic Blue Skies USA but it's so good.

If you were going for 4-buttons like SHADEs 3 and CvTW, the Clue stuff could be a seperate button instead of involving Start, sorta like the Traits and Supers in CvTW. Would likely be more convenient in terms of buttons.

Yeah that makes more sense, he will be 4 buttons so might as well assign the clues to Z and throws to C like in SOM3.

Thanks, I've been thinking about it for a long time, ever since I had the idea for him to be a striker in CVTW before I abandoned the striker idea. Then UMVC3 came out and I thought that the way Phoenix Wright plays would fit him pretty well with some tweaks.

I watched this show when I was younger. never expected to see it for mugen whats next MONK?

You'll fix chuchoryu ? Sounds like a plan. How about you code him from scratch instead ?

Nope, it just struck me as a good way to reference the origin (so to speak) of Shawn's observational ability without a flashback like in the show while also getting in a Psych type gag

He would just never touch his opponent, lots of helpers, thrown items, a sneeze like Phoenix Wright, the works!

I'll always be bummed that they never did a Psych/Monk crossover. They teased it in Psych's series finale and I've been hoping they'd do it as a TV movie event ever since.

Is Jules and Lassie randomized? Like what determines if you get Jules or Lassie?

If it is you should consider changing it. Maybe make the gun version QCB + KK
