So.. I haven't been so active on MFG for the past 1-2 years? Took time away to focus on taking art classes to improve myself and studying as well. I actually stopped spriting for quite some time but then went on and off with it because I didn't feel as confident in myself as a spriter compared to other amazing spriters here. Now I have matured and have a better mentality on myself when it comes to spriting. Lately I've been working on other sprites focused for other indie games which have not been announced quite yet.

I've always wanted to finish one full character for Mugen and well here I am returned, improved with my spriting skills and animation skill I am a lot more confident than I was years ago spriting. So I've decided to start from scratch on Vegito and since I work from home I am able to work on Vegito almost every single day. I have a movelist (incomplete) for Vegito that I am going to send to Iced, Balthazar, and Cybaster to perhaps get their input on it.

I haven't fully started spriting anything quite yet in fact almost all animations I have in mind are roughly outlined first.

Without further ado here he is my revamped Super Vegito Z2. Also can any Mods delete my old Vegito thread? I want to start fresh and new with this one.

You're able to delete it yourself. Just scroll to the bottom of the page on any given page in the thread and click remove topic.
Is finding MUGEN to be more enjoyable to play when you're not wearing clothes an underrated opinion?

If this shows promise, it might get added to the HDBZ roster, and what I see on the idle sprite, it certainly shows promise to me.  Best of luck on this project, man :)

i think it would be cool if vegito had a floating stance with his arms crossed, it would be a pain to transition into punches but i think it would be worth it (Light punch could be a quick elbow from his crossed arms)

I agree.

I did this ages ago for my Lf2 Mod. You could easily use that as a referance I guess:

Ah since you're starting fresh, I will also pitch in and say he'd be more interesting
and more 'Vegito' if his stance was something like this pose:
, floating (but ofcourse staying in place).
You could even go the Elena way and have all his attacks be kicks,
including the punch buttons, so he's always keeping his arms crossed.

We'll be glad to help out suggesting moves and poses and the general direction he could be taken into.
Good luck!

I would suggest against making all his basics as kicks. The "arms crossed" pose shouldn't be constant, he only did that for a short exchange, he did use his fists the rest of the time. It only really works as a counter stance IMO (be it a special counter or a style switch limited in time, like Kim Kaphwan and such).
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Nice to see this back. :)

Using only kicks would distance himself a little from the other fighters. He can still use punches in command normals, air moves, throws, specials, supers, etc. The arms crossed stance is too good to pass on, imo.

Anyways, good luck Hien. You got lots of people here to help you if you need it.

Agreed with you all on how all basics would be only kicks but I think his crossed arm stance would better suite his emotion mode? If his arms were crossed the entire time wouldn't his transition to other animations look a bit strange?

Since I'm starting completely from scratch please go ahead and make all the suggestions you guys want!

Ahh I read it as everyone agreed with use all kicks lol.

Did another quick "sketch" I think having Vegito grounded with his crossed arms looks better rather than have him stay floating.

I was thinking about using HQ's LF2 animation he provided as an example for Light, Medium, Heavy Punches. Also I think Vegito should have a rapid attack like SSJ Goku but instead of punches it would be kicks with his left leg then a launcher with his right, as his heavy kick command.

Aw man, now this is gonna be epic. My only suggestion at the moment would be to make his back walk [or float as the case may be] or back dash somewhat "Come-At-Me-Bro" ish, taunting and cocky like Vegito himself actually is.

His legs need to be almost twice as long! Now it's like you see his waist, then his knees, then his boots.
The lower legs portion is missing :gonk:

Still too short, I advise you to first draw some naked legs to get the lenght and proportions right, THEN draw the pants over them.
If the legs are supposed to be the same lenght (both straight and not the knee bent) then the front leg should be a bit longer because of the perspective, but definitely not shorter (then the rear leg).

I agree with Daeron there. You could also use some references from Jump Ultimate Stars as Vegeto was a playable Character in The Game.

Vegitto from Jump Ultimate Stars is just the strongest form of Goku, and most of his moves come from Goku. Better sources might be Hyper Dimension and Final Bout, since Vegetto is a unique playable character in those games.

It would be nice if there were some move exhibition videos, but these might help:

The first Dragon Ball arcade game had Freezer fighting the first round with only kicks, and resume normal fighting on the second one. You can use the spritesheet for reference on animations.

The arms crossed stance could be restricted to the Emo mode, as if the character was showing more of Vegeta's cockyness

Glad to be back man.

Okay okay Balth, how is this now? Took your advice and drew out the legs and drew over them with the pants. I think any longer he wouldn't look proportionally correct, I also compared the length to your Piccolo and he shouldn't be as tall as Piccolo.

Looks like a great start, but I'd greatly increase the size of his legs and feet (I know the foot is bent backwards but it still could use more visibility)
ignore the piccolo height

Also, here's my thought on the stance.
I would love to see him touch-floating with crossed arms in the stance like this:

When he hits his emotional mode he drops to the floor with that stance here:

The reason why - he is about to get real with his opponent and stops playing around.

also some possible Attacks:

I dunno about you guys, but I prefer it when a character stays grounded in their stance animation; otherwise jumping feels weird. Just a personal thing. Floating definitely does make him look way more unique and badass though. He almost seems like a final boss or something, which is pretty cool. I can dig it. (Completely off-topic: I would love it if the final boss in arcade mode was someone non-canon to surprise the player, like blue hair SSJG Vegito :P )

Oh I like Daeron, that will come in handy as an example for the hair. Thanks.

I actually like what HQ recommended for the stance but I have the opposite idea of Vegito's emo mode. His emo mode is Arrogance where I think he should be floating or standing with his arms crossed making him more carefree about the fight. I could have him grounded the entire fight with a mix of punches and kicks. Then  when you activate his emotion mode he would be floating and all his attacks are kicks in this state he could possibly have all grounded kicks resprited into floating along with some new floating kicks just for his emotion mode. What do you guys think of this idea? Might be a bit much but I feel like going the extra mile would pay off in the long run.

I am really diggin this new stance compared to the other I had although it only changes the arms position. I am thinking this new stance would look good if he had his legs straightened up a tad bit more rather than bent IMO but at the same time I think this looks fine.

This is also what I have in mind for his Standing heavy kick. It's a rough draft so it's not final I just wanted to get the point across with this. I didn't bother to add more frames yet until I'm satisfied with the main frames. So Rapid kicks and then launches the opponent. Although I didn't sketch out the launcher.

This may suit his arrogance stance but again I'm still deciding what fits best where and how it would turn out.

I really agree that he should be floating, instead. I think it adds to his character well, and it gives him a more unique feel. sort of like "Nova, from UMVC3". IN FACT, that could be a perfect reference idea. :)

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Vegito floating. It really does imply immense power. As it stands, we already have three characters with a similar body type and outfit in the Z2 style: Goku, SSJ Goku, and Gohan. It would really help Vegito stand out if he was floating by default and carried this arrogant demeanour from the get-go. That would be a bit cooler than waiting for emotion mode to get the unique animations.

On the other hand, that new grounded stance looks pretty rad. Like, super rad.

I really agree that he should be floating, instead. I think it adds to his character well, and it gives him a more unique feel. sort of like "Nova, from UMVC3".

Ermac in MKX is another good example.

No worries Loupil suggestions are welcomed, no need to hold back on them. Thanks for those sketches those will help out in the future, my reference for Vegito was Chun Li's kicks lol.

Well it is decided Vegito will be an airborne/floaty character to make him standout from the rest of the Z2 cast.

I already started making his Idle stance it might need about 2-3 more frames, I used Daeron's animation he made earlier as a reference on how to approach animating the hair and clothes. I'll focus on the idle and finish it until I'm satisfied before moving on to any other animations since it's my weak point in animating.

i think you should do the earrings bigger like in my animation, they are hard to see in your version and kind of get lost in the sprites.
Z2 style tends to exagerate a bit on the hair or character features like Piccolo ears, i think the earrings should get that treatment aswell, since they are a very definitive aspect of Vegito

Wait, so Vegito Z2 is gonna be a thing? sweet. I agree with the point Daeron made, and it would be recommendable to add more frames to the floating stance since the animation looks too static. I think making the hair flow in each frame and maybe increasing the speed of the animation should do the trick

So glad to see you back, good luck with Vegito, that guy was my main in Hyper Dimension (along with Piccolo and Majin Vegeta) :)

Also, a few transition frames in that idle sprite would do it some good. If you're using Photoshop to animate, try putting the frame speed at 0.07 or 0.08. Works for all my animations.

Have you considered, perhaps, keeping him in his base form and having him turn Super Saiyan for certain attacks or supers?

A matter of personal opinion, but I see more personality in the Saiyans when they aren't all transformed. Also, it would slightly reign in the character in terms of power when compared to the rest of the cast.

Just a thought.

That's more of a palette choice, rather than an actual necessity. Base or super, he's still a wild card. so there's really no need for that.

Alternatively, you could milk the spriteset for two characters - normal and SSJ Vegito, just like what we have for Goku and Vegeta. It would probably be way harder to differentiate the two versions compared to Goku and Vegeta though, plus it'd mean twice the coding work. Personally I'm fine with just the SSJ version.

Also, that palette looks pretty nice.

Goku and Vegeta both spent a significant portion of the series without having a Super Saiyan form and learned new moves after getting it. Vegito is the worst Saiyan for those suggestions since he pretty much just transforms right away. The normal form isn't notable at all. Transforming for certain special moves would much more sense for Gotenks, and it would probably save the spriter some hassle if they don't have to do Super Saiyan 3 hair all the time. But this isn't a Gotenks Z2 thread.

Thanks HQ and Iced, for the references. Those will definitely come in handy once I get to the attacks.

I'll be going with the list DragonSlayerEX provided just to keep my progress well organized. You guys might want to hold off on any palettes until I get further into the spriting. Vegito will remain in his SSJ form no point in having him not be in SSJ since he was fighting in his SSJ form mostly anyways.

I've been working hard on the idle stance so far it's coming out really well. Might need some fixes and tweaks with the hair and shading on his pants. Took Daeron's suggestion and gave him a bigger earring so it stands out better.

I think you should keep him static at least for this animated gif, it's easier to grade the animation of his cloth/hair that way.
I mean yes have the clothes and hair move, but don't have him go up and down.

That's more of a palette choice, rather than an actual necessity. Base or super, he's still a wild card. so there's really no need for that.

Not a palette choice if he turns Super Saiyan during super arts. I think it's just more of a way to make it more dynamic and make the form feel a little more special, rather than just being standard.

Transforming for certain special moves? what

But really, just stick to SSJ Vegito.

It's hardly a new concept. Goku goes SSJ3 specifically for his Dragon Fist in HD. Also, doesn't Goku Z2 go SSJ for one of his finishers?

This is going to take a while to perfect and finish. Took what you suggested Balth, it is much easier to animate if each frame is static. Perhaps less movement in the pants would suffice?

Perhaps tone down the movement on his bangs a little? It kinda looks like two spider fangs feeding on prey at the moment, lol. The animation is solid and smooth, though.

I totally agree here.

Btw, the way his feet are positioned, I think there shouldn't be any light touching them, I think they can be completely dark even. Maybe just a smudge of light on the tip of his front toe (the yellow bit (toe armor?).

I'm at a loss on how the pants animation could look better. Indeed it does look jello-y once XG mentioned it, but still, I don't think it looks that bad.

I don't know if it is finished, but the animation would also need a bit of movement for his upper body: subtle clothes and arms movement.
That boots has a dark in-line/fold/crease, that could be made thinner.

I think he should have a breathing animation. Not exactly as, for lack of a better term, "exaggerated" as Frieza's, but he could definitely use it. Stop showing off and quit holding your breath, Vegito :V

Don't want to add a upper body breathing movement quite yet but I agree he seems too stiff up top perhaps some slight movement on his sleeve and arms? My main focus is how the pants should be animated. Trying to make it look less jello-y like each frame has the pants moving one pixel down slightly. I also toned down the bangs movement.

I'm currently at a huge loss on how the pants would be animated better  :blank:

Here's how it looks static

This is how I imagine it . Vegito non static floating up and down.

Definitely needs some fixing on the shading to make it look more fluid? Took your advice Black Hatter and added 0.08 frame speed to a few frames can't really tell too much of a difference but it does look a bit better.

Whoa good stuff HQ, I think I might use that in his idle stance rather than a walk/float back. I have an idea for his walking/floating backwards where he taunts the opponent as he's going back he's waving at them like "Come at me" kind of tone.

Hoping idea #2 has something to do with the pants lol I'm really stuck and lost on it here.

The pants move backwards. As he's rising, the pants should be stretching further down his legs to accommodate gravity, and when he descends, they should rise because of air magic and stuff. Just looks weird to me with the pants stretching the same way he's moving. They should follow the pattern of the hair more, even though the hair seems to be moving up of its own accord as he's descending in his stance, just seems too sudden. Also, it may just be me, but the idle stance seems a bit fast. I would imagine floating like that would cause you to be moving a bit slower. Like driving in a straight line, slowly making small adjustments to stay as straight as you can, not like swerving all over both lanes trying to stay in yours.

If you see a Diverien, it's almost definitely me. So say hi :D

Oh with the "played backwards" I meant that the animation could also be used starting the finger motion from the pinky instead of the index finger ;)

As for the general motion, I would not have him float and instead have him animated like that here:
maybe with even slighter animation at the legs - if you redraw the frames individually there it will look nice :) - also the hair should wave just like in your animation and not stop at the inhaling (like in my example - I simply put a second frame of it in there to prolong the timing of the animation)

Nice HQ, really digging the upper body movement. Although I'm not too sure about the legs and how they are animated like that, personally I like the idea of Vegito just staying in one point but your ideas won't go to waste because it looks like those bottom body animations could work well for transitions into his walking/floating backwards motion instead of an idle.

Here's what I've cooked up so far I made the hair less "windy" looking and I'm still trying to figure out the pants as well. Again I do think HQ that the upper body movement would work well though.

great :) try using the upperbody movement and maybe have his finger animated every third animation circle :)

If you keep the lower legs like that, I'd also animate them a bit different - let's see what everybody else says & then I rework that pants animation (as currently they move the wrong way)

This, with a bit of:

this upper body motion would be great, alongside the finger tapping that HQ mentioned. And I wouldn't change the legs too much, but maybe have them separate by like a pixel or two as he ascends, then come back together as he descends. Might make the animation look a bit less static as he's floating there. However, something about the way the pants move still bothers me. Maybe it's me being weird, but it still seems jerky compared to how I'd imagine things, now that the overall animation seems a bit slower, the pants still seem to move a bit suddenly. Like they raise up slightly after he starts moving downwards, and try to accommodate for the time they weren't moving

If you see a Diverien, it's almost definitely me. So say hi :D

nothing excludes itself really, stances are more than just a few frames, they can have idles and everything, and the bits he doesnt use on stance can be used during motion forward or backward.

He can get gethits out of the way before even finishing stance as long as he has one frame done.

Personally, I'd say have him float up and down a bit, nothing that's too far off the ground, and maybe on like the third or fourth loop of it, have him finger tap then, not having it as a constant thing. I think the leg movement makes him look less stiff, but at the same time could look a bit less "mobile" for lack of a better term.

You're basically better off leaving him floating. Hien's stance with better transition frames on the folds and a bit of leg movement would be fine. I also agree with Project.13, a bit of up and down floating would give him more life, the edits you did to make him breathe look weird for the pose. Recall that Magneto although he floats doesn't look like he's breathing, but the arm movements are suffice to add a bit more life to him. Think about it.

This stance looks much better than before. The clothes and hair looked like they were moving on their own at first, now they look like they're moving due to inertia. His body moving up is pulling the hair up by its roots, etc.
HQ's stance is moving too much, I think. Vegito doesn't need to lean back to breathe.

I don't know enough about art to tell, but maybe the "jello pants" effect is because the wrinkles are staying constant? Or maybe the part of his pants that are stuffed into his boots should puff out slightly when he moves upward. He's only moving slightly, so I don't think the animation needs to be excessive.

Got some small progress, took so long to work on the Idle stance. I changed the pants of the idle stance IMO it looked a bit too puffy for me looking back at it. The idle animation is still incomplete but I'm going to move on and come back to it later. I gathered up about 40% ref animations to use to help me with the progress of Vegito.

Here I have the floating/walking forward, Don't mind the speed its meh.

Currently working on the floating/walking backward movement, he's going to be moving back while waving at his opponent. Similar to Shen Woo's walking back. I personally think this is fitting for Vegito it gives off his arrogant attitude.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys! I'll be competing at breakdance events this entire week so I won't have much time to sprite as much as I want but after I'll get back on track. Good news is I'm nearly halfway done with the get hit animations, figured these would be easier to get out the way and I can move on to something more exciting like his normal attacks.

Big Question: Who's the programmer? If none, I'd love too. I've got some experience in replicating the style. :)

No programmer so far, I haven't even thought of whose going to program Vegito but hey if you are up for it. I don't see why not, you made some good progress with what you had to work with for Trunks!

Progress looks good! Can't wait to see the Back Float + the GetHits :)
You can always take a quick look at Storm's or Superman's animations to see how floating characters could look like getting hit

Thanks, definitely used Storms get hits as an example so I'm nearly halfway done with them.

Project ain't dead I just haven't bothered to post any real progress because I revamped Vegito AGAIN. Meaning I have to revamp his walking/floating animations along with his get hit animations  >_<. Also been trying to balance 3 jobs so I haven't had a lot of time to freely sprite Vegito :( I'll only be able to knock out one animation within a day or two sadly.

I was Looking at Balthazar's recent project Piccolo to help improve on the gi and overall design. The left sprite is the updated design while the right is the older design from last month.

Still a rough and incomplete animation missing about 2 frames but this should give you guys an idea on how I am going about my progress.

This is looking great! I  know it'll be a while since this is out, but I can't Wait!
by the way,  for his heavy kick, you could do what Balthazar did for goku's heavy punch, draw two kicks or so, then add 3-4 extra feet in every kick.

Well, here is what I cooked up with your old stance. (Since I think his old one looks more realistic to the anime/manga, just ,my opinion.)

Also for some reason, vegito's hair reminds me of SSJ Goku's from extreme butoden?

@MotorRoach: Thanks Moto for re-uploading it for me.

@GOD984: Sorry man I appreciate what ya did but I won't be using that stance now since Vegito will be floating instead of being on the ground. His hair? Uhh maybe? I dunno I didn't look at the EB sprites for his hair

No problameo man, infact I was originally planning to make a small little SSJ_GokuZ2 Vegito patch, (including some knew sprites, and sounds and winposes.) But I found this thread thank goodness!

Thanks MotorRoach!
Here's some tips for improvements ;) In hindsight you should keep the kick lower though! (like in your animations)

just came up with a great Idea, Vegito does a left kick, than a right kick,  just like below, then he twist in the air, and hits them with the back of his foot/heel.

@HQ: Love what ya did man but I feel like his foot should still stick out/point out, here's what I came up with it's like a 20 minute sketch using the animation you provided to help with it.

Those seem like two completely different kicks.

It's intended to be the light kick, right? HQ yours looks like it would better suit a medium.  The way his hips turn changes it completely.

You guys are all right ;)

Hien, take a close look how the upperbody twist the other way the kick goes in my animation (that's how impact can be made - try the move yourself - without the floating haha)

Here's another try at it, so it looks more like a Light Kick ;)

I think removing one frame from both those animations will make it truly fitting for a low kick, particularly when Vegito retracts his leg.
This is a generic forum signature.

It doesn't look much like a kick at all to me. More like he's reaching out with his foot and trying to drag something back.

perhaps it can be used to drag someone with his foot and trip them? just a quick thought

Just saying, but I think the original idea was for Vegito to kick using only the end of his foot. What you have STILL looks far from being a light kick.

Make it that way the kick bends before kicking, and it come back straight, like this,

by doing that, you can make it a trip/light kick, either or work with that animation.
sorry for bad quality, just an example after all :)

@HQ: I think using the end of the foot would look better for a light kick, also I'm a bit lost on the upper body is his body supposed to tilt back and remain in the position with his lower body turned because for mine I have the upper and lower body both turned together

Edit: God984 asked if I'm involved in this project - it got trashed because of a necrobump for some reason.

Here's my answer: Generally with animation work, I help to improve if I have time & the product is of my interest. As of right now when Hien needs some help I helped.

Hien, what's the progress on this? Are you still interested in continuing the work?

@HQ: I'm still working on this but as of right now there's nothing worth showing unless you guys wanna see outlines of all his normal attacks(air, standing, crouching) I have finished. So no specials or super attacks, intros, winposes are even thought of yet.
