Title: Dashes that cancel into air normals?

How do you go about coding a dash that cancels into a low-altitude air normal when you press a button? For Darkstalkers players, I'm attempting to emulate Squatch/Talbain/Felicia's dashes. The animation already looks like the character should be airborne, but any normals that get thrown out become a ground normal.

For those of you that don't play Darkstalkers but might know, I'll explain it like this: What I want is to be able to dash by pressing f+f, but be considered airborne once initiated, with just a burst of horizontal velocity that happens high enough above ground level so that, if I were to cancel into a j.HK, the normal would have enough time to come out.
