Title: Alex S. / G.o.D. stuff
Post by: AlexSin on June 10, 2012, 10:07:36 am
Spoiler: my really old work (click to see content)

So, here I'm creating my Graphics sprite topic.
(http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/17/42/95/34/zell_110.png) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=64&u=17429534)

Edit of "djfenix" Zell sprite on DeviantArt, here it is: http://djfenix.deviantart.com/art/Zell-Dincht-Sprite-26993454
Color separated almost everything, but I have some problems on the legs and on the Metal Knuckles.
Heheheh, right now, looking at the sprite, I realize that I didn't put an ear to Zell.

Title: Re: G.o.D. sprites (Zell Dincht from FFVIII for now)
Post by: AlexSin on June 10, 2012, 03:12:55 pm
Here there is his portrait, based on FFVIII portrait (the one you see in Junction or Status screen):
(http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/17/42/95/34/zell_p10.png) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=65&u=17429534)
http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/17/42/95/34/zell_p10.png
It isn't 25x25 nor 120x140, but I like it, I'm proud of it!

 :)
More separated (shoes from jacket), adjusted shading, edited face (thanks to Orchestra from Mugen Generations), more fold in the shorts (I think I've done something wrong but I don't know what, maybe the shading in those).
Opinions and Feedback is appreciated!

And can you suggest a good image hosting site?

Why does he have so many colors?

I use photobucket and deviantart

He has a lot of colours because he's colour separated (hair, jacket, gloves, teeth, eyes, shoes, belt, skin, shorts, tattoo, flame on the jacket etc.).
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll use photobucket because I'm not an artist like deviantartists, heheh...

I used Ryo as a base, not Kyo, but their animation is the same, really weird.
By the way, do you know some good bases for him? And also I would sprite his moves from the game but it's difficult (I should use his FFVIII model but I don't know how to rip it)...

What do we have here?
The first sprite is the Shin Butouden Master Roshi; (thousands of colours!)
the second sprite is the cleaned sprite (much easier to make palettes, but not entirely separated);
the third is the second with a dark outline.

Nice stuff man, but why your edited Roshi has round glasses?
Title: Re: G.o.D. sprites
Post by: AlexSin on July 26, 2012, 09:28:37 am
Because of this:
http://myfavoriteshowsgamesandmovies.webs.com/photos/character_large_332x363_master-roshi.jpg

They're a bit rounded, aren't they?
And it's difficult to edit these sprites, but I wanted to edit it like in the Anime, with the red and the green of the glasses.

Thanks for the feedback.

Now that I look at it...

I'll try to fix the sprite later.

Colour separation for KFM. I will change something for the edits of KFM.
I was wondering, is it right to colour separate all of his edits and then release them to the public? (giving credits of course)
Because I would like to do it, but I don't know if it is the right thing to do.

I like what you're doing! I especially like the new KFM back view. VAST improvement over the only other one out there for Evil Kung Fu Man II (or whatever the robot cyborg one is called..). I wouldn't way such extensive color separation is *needed* per se, but it is cool to see. Neat to see someone else looks at the buff frame they made ha!

I would ask for some references for Paragus, for Broly's intro.
And some for Broly's too.
(Just for you to know, I want to make a Normal Broly, not a LSSJ Broly, that will come later perhaps.)

Maybe I'll ask you when I finish the japanese soundpack, but you'll have to wait...wait...wait... I only did a few sprites.
Please, if you can get some references for him and for Paragus, I'll be very grateful.

you got rid of all the detail, Hair shading is weird. face looks really off. it would've been easier to just follow the sprite and reduce it's color count. Rather than trying to clean it the way you did.

yeah, don't play innocent, the thing with the purple pants and the old-man face. There's so much wrong with it that I won't bother going into details. If you can't see anything wrong with it, I can't help you.

Your KFM sprite edit suggests his torso is facing forward, but the legs position and the shading suggest they're facing the opposite direction and a different lightsource is hitting it.

You need serious anatomy lessons:

- Neck / Head / Face is wrong
- Torso / Arms / Legs length are questionable at best.
- Hands are tiny.
- Those shoes.

You're trying to run, and you clearly haven't finished your crawling lessons. Learn where elbows and knees go. Practice drawing by hand first until you can get a reasonably fair looking human figure, this looks like elementary school doodles.

Good to see your still trying to improve! I will make one suggestion that I learned recently myself.

As far as being a pixel artist goes i feel like its better to learn how to do stuff with out a base. I mean its okay if you draw it on paper and what not but you should learn how to make stuff from scratch and not depend on other peoples work (like pictures and sprites bases) reference pics are good like for anatomy. But like tracing over outlines or editing outlines will only get you to a certain point. I am not sure how far you want your pixel art to take you.

But in order to level up and become a better artist I would suggest learning how to draw your stuff on paper. Trust me I suck at drawing stuff on paper but it is the way to go to learn how to do anatomy better and being more original. I learned this after years of spriting and doing it as a hobby. When it came to the point of me wanting to do it as a job and work on teams and stuff. Being original is the key! Learning how to sprite from pretty much nothing but your own imagination and skills is the key!

This just me but
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Try to challenge your self into improving your art! Doing more stuff from scratch is a hard process for people who started out just making edits. But in the long run it will better you!

I hoped this helped you! and Keep on posting your progress man :)

Yes, I know, but I don't have enough paper.

Joking, of course I have paper, it's just that I suck at drawing on a white sheet and nothing else but my imagination.
I tried it in the past, but meh. I didn't like it.
(Note: I didn't attend a drawing school or anything for that matter, that can be one of the reason of my difficulty at drawing; I think only once I was taught about anatomy, but that was a long time ago, and I was not interested in drawing.)

I drew some faces though, and they came ok, I guess (they were portraits of some classmates, a professor too).
They obviously were different from the "source" (if you can say so), some details were in the wrong place etc.; but they weren't that bad.

Now, anatomy; the thing I hate is making the proportions right. In fact, if you can see in the OC sprite (grey+violet), it was all wrong, shading too. (I didn't draw on paper, but I doubt the outcome would have been different). I'm not pessimistic (and if I look like it, shoot me), I'll start that process later, believe me. For now I do these type of things.

Thanks for the tip (walt said something like that too, the "draw on paper" stuff and the anatomy), I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Just saying its gonna take some years to get better at drawing on paper honestly the sooner the better :) But all in your own time once your ready for that!

Drawing on paper for a pixel artist is a MUST I think for leveling up your art and animations and stuff...I suck at drawing too. But I am trying my hardest man. if that means anything. Just try drawing the basic shapes and stuff first before you move on to complicated stuff.

The SFIII sprite creators must have drawn all animations with pencil and paper.
If you can get some great animations in that way... I mean I want to do it (to achieve those great results), but I'm still not ready to do that in my opinion.

Anyway,

Finally finished!
Sure, I could have anti aliased more some lines (I was even going to do that), but then I decided not to do that.

I think it's better this way.

I'm already fixing some mistakes I made during the outlining process.
The lines that are inside the outlines are the shading's (I have to make some others) if you were wondering. I think the eye is done, but the nose...

It's also weird that there's really few sprites of him in HR or HD. My attempt is in HR as usual with these SFIII sprites.

Is that a direct retrace of a sprite?

The face is clearly not very DBZ style, and the hair lacks lots of lines that usually are the ones defining volume.

Is that a direct retrace of a sprite?
Yes, of a small Supersonic Warriors 2 (http://spritedatabase.net/files/ds/20/Sprite/Broly.png) sprite I rescaled. It's the first one.
The face is clearly not very DBZ style, and the hair lacks lots of lines that usually are the ones defining volume.
- It was difficult for me to get the face right (I think) using a small sprite (I challenged myself to do this); I checked some images and this is how I made it. I have to check more references.
Is the cheek alright?
- About the hair, you're right. How can I improve it? I mean, where should I put the lines? Ah, now I get it!

The thick lines are that thick on purpose.

The thick lines are that thick on purpose.
Are you turning that BACK into a sprite of a bigger size? :wink3:

The lines ... well, you'd be better off copying the original artwork. Try tracing or copying 3 to 5 official artworks of Broly, or Super Saiyans in general, and you'll see for yourself.

Sometimes the lines start where that hair area stems from, sometimes they're at the end. Most of the times, though, like I said, they're supposed to hint at 3D volume of the hair.

Hey! I just saw that Fernando dude on Pixel Joint like 15 minutes ago. waaaaat

Also that SF3 Ryu run looks badass! Every other attempt at an animation like that I've seen looks hilariously awkward. If you want to make a custom animation for a SF3 character you gotta do it more or less from scratch seeing as the rest of the move-set will always look top-notch.

Perhaps you have in mind the SF3 sprites (and so the SF3 games); this was intended as a HR sprite.

I used a SFAlpha 3 sprite as a base: a filtered sprite (and you know I don't like them) but it was a good base (in my defence I can say I've never said they aren't good bases though).

That face is really strikingly similar to Maylin´s face, yours have a smaller chin though. It was the reference?? Really lovely Shanna sprite. I dont quite like how the strand of hair that is closer to her face looks quite light, maybe it is a HR transition thing but it loos odd to me.

Yes, that's the reference. My idea was to make her in Akatsuki Blitzkampf style (or very close).
Really lovely Shanna sprite.
Also, is that her real name from Kakuge Yarou? Or did you confuse her with somebody else?

About the strand of hair, I see what you mean but it was intended, I wanted to make it lighter to differentiate it from the ones in the shadow.

Edit: I checked Kong's rips and her name is Kassha.

It could be one of the following:

*Her left foot slides around oddly?
*Her right foot is static even though it probably should move a little?
*Maybe legs should be bending a bit more unless she's meant to be rocking herself?
*She's shaking her head for some reason?

That's all I got for that. ^^;

I love that stance. The only thing that I see is her hair doesn't turn with her face. Her bangs should move to the left and the bow and ponytail to the right. Simple shifting of what you already have would fix it.

Well done!

Really smooth Roll anim. I am just a bit bothered by the way the wind affects her hair, it seems rather unnatural the way it simply goes a little up then down again.

*Her left foot slides around oddly?
*Her right foot is static even though it probably should move a little?
*Maybe legs should be bending a bit more unless she's meant to be rocking herself?
*She's shaking her head for some reason?
- I made it so she moved/turned it a little. Our left, viewer's left, right?
- It moves a very little bit, but more movement can be added.
- She is supposed to turn a little, it's the way I "designed" the stand animation.
- The face. That's the problem, I know that the eyes move too much on her face while the hair doesn't.
Let's see if I can explain it with numbers: what I did is 1-2-3-3 but it would have been better if I made it 1-1-2-2. But I'm not sure if the head follows the same movement I wanted her to have.

I love that stance. The only thing that I see is her hair doesn't turn with her face. Her bangs should move to the left and the bow and ponytail to the right. Simple shifting of what you already have would fix it.

Well done!
See above and thanks. :)
I'll fix the key frames.

Really smooth Roll anim. I am just a bit bothered by the way the wind affects her hair, it seems rather unnatural the way it simply goes a little up then down again.
While I was working with GraphicsGale it looked better, but it's because the frames had another order.
Perhaps I should just ditch the wind effect, it's not really needed.

Yeah, I was just throwing out what I thought COULD have been the issue, but looking at it again, it is definitely the face. As for #1, I was referring to viewer's left foot (Roll's right foot), if that helps any.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. :)

Before I start fixing the anim,
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/NickCostumes.png)

Also, I progressed a little with Dudley stance. If I keep at this pace I'll be dead before I finish it! But it's my motivation that goes back and forth, I lose it and it returns. :-\
Sometimes I find something interesting and want to animate/draw that thing instead of finishing what I've already started...

In any case there will be updates about those two animations soon.

I edited some Ryu frames (SFA style):
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuAlphaAkumaMediumKickFixampEdit.gif) edited from (http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuAlphaOldKick.gif) (to see the changes you have to look very closely each frame)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuAlphaCloseMediumPunchEdit.gif) (added one frame, it was kind of easy since it's similar to one of the Shin Shoryuken punches)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuAlphaCloseMediumKickEdit.gif) (original frames by JustNoPoint, I edited them in width and fixed a bit the shading and the face and I added one frame)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuAlphaWinPose.gif) (edited the headband)

Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: AlexSin on October 01, 2014, 03:51:37 pm
These were minor edits, but I'm glad you like them. :)

I also fixed (or better, downgraded to Elecbyte's style) a bit Rolento's new animations for KFM:
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/KFMRolentoPunchEdit.gif~original) (original by Rolento/CallMeMrA: (http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/326/b/9/kung_fu_man___custom_punch_by_callmemra-d4gz87d.gif))

His animations had a different style of shading (and different heads), so I had to do this. The heads were taken from KFM's light kick (I took this shortcut, but in my opinion these heads fit more).

Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites

Which one?

KFM's punch was originally created by Rolento, I just edited it; that edit took me quite some time though.
Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: Markpachi on October 01, 2014, 04:42:00 pm
Yeah, I was referring to your edit. That "swivel motion" seen on the hips and knees looks real good! So how was KFM's shading? I kinda want to do some edits of my own using KFM's sprites, but i'm just not confident enough with animation.
Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: AlexSin on October 01, 2014, 04:58:54 pm
So how was KFM's shading?

I knew what I had to fix in those animations (simple lines, not too much antialiasing or sel-out, thinner pants and sleeves, colouring light areas with dark colours like his left arm when he throws the punch) so all in all not too difficult.
Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: AlexSin on October 10, 2014, 12:23:33 am
Ken's face bothered me quite a bit so I went and did a little fix (also on his arm and his hand: I have added two frames for that; compare them closely frame by frame).
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/KenOldWinPose.gif~original)(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/KenWinPoseEditedFaceArmHand.gif~original)
Old vs new.

I'm fixing them rescaling them at 400% of their size, do some quick draws and rescale. It doesn't work bad, it's also the same thing I did for the Ryu animations.

I should fix the pants too, I'll do it later.

Another thing, I continued with the Dudley stance.
Here it is:

Coming from you, it means I've done a good job in that animation.
But I'm tired of working on KoF styled sprites, so I won't do a project on that. However I appreciate it.

Thanks Felo. :)

I was trying to help Ghost Killer to make this sprite:
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/Sagatedit2.png~original) (it's a frame from SvC)
the thing I'm not proud of is the hands and the face would need a retouch. :( How can I make them better?

Sprite edit process:
(the first frame is Ghost Killer's base)

Also, I'm doing another animation and it's not in SNK style, it's in CvS style. Another stand animation. But I won't tell you who's the character. :P
Then I will work on animating punches or get hits for the char and that will be a great challenge for me. Maybe, I don't know.

Damn, that Terry is really awesome. My only nitpick is that his hair could use some brightening (or shading), as it looks rather flat right now.
I know, but that was also missing in the CvS spriteset (I noticed that they could have lighted his hair with his lightest shade of the skin, but they didn't for some reason :S), so I wanted to leave the hair like that, for accuracy. I agree that it looks flat.

Here's the little fix: (http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/CvSTerryMotWattireminoredit.png~original)

I'm still 90% done with the other animation and I'm not happy with it, anyway I will post it tomorrow (I hope to finish it for tomorrow).
So after that I could animate Terry to have a CvS stance.
But I'm not going to convert all of his MotW sprites into CvS. :P

Thanks Thedge and B.Hatter. :)

These look really cool and I admire that you aim for different styles too.

If something, Seth, M. Bison(Boxer) and Heavy D were the best references for Dudley.

I see you are using MotW torso and new custom pants, he looks a bit wide in the upper part. The obvious way would be to edit the original CvS sprites doing the jacket, erasing the cap and giving him a hairstyle like Ken, Rugal or Rock. It would help you with the stand animation since you simply change the clothes and don't have to make fit different sources as MotW and CvS, I mean in the framecount and arm poses of the final stand.

Nice touch doing a proper star in his shoulder.

Thanks Chamat, it's nice to read your feedback.
I have to try different styles, I must to become versatile in some way.

About Terry, I agree about the torso being large so I will edit that, but I have to disagree about editing CvS Terry to have his MotW jacket etc. (the hair part will be helpful though). I say this because if I do my sprite becomes too similar to Dark Raven's and I don't want that.

Thanks GLB. :)

So I mentioned an animation. I bring you three:
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/Shun%20stand_1.gif~original)(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/Shun%20stand%20resize%201.gif~original)(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/Shun%20stand%20resize%202.gif~original) (colour separated his hair)
It's Shun from the Street Fighter Alpha movies. Base sprite by Chamat.
This was the animation I wasn't very convinced about and I also should have posted it yesterday.
(I resized it because I thought it was too small so you can look at it better)
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/KenWinPoseEditandFix.gif~original) (colour separated)
Some pages back I edited the face, but now I edited the pants too. Maybe @Jmorphman: could use these.
(damn, those tags don't work in this board!)

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/RyuDodgeAnimation-CvStoSFA-.gif~original) (colour separated)
I also converted Ryu's dodge frames from CvS to SFA style.
The faces were re-drawn, I didn't copy and paste them from other sprites. Only one foot was copied but was edited a bit.

Too bad it exceeds the 16 colours limit. :(

Also I wasted some time on this:
From a LSW sprite (edit) to a different style I invented.

And this:
I was trying to make a new sprite in CvS style with this method (the grayscale method), but meh. It didn't work that well. I suppose this works better for SFIII sprites.
(or I should have used a smaller brush size)

I like what you did with Shao Kun's sprite, Alex. However, I think  you should fix the lightsource on Sagat's right leg. His pants are lightened from different angle than rest of his leg - at this moment his limb looks unnaturally twisted .
In your SF4-to-cvs edit it looks much better.
Also in some places lightspots seem to be a bit too flat - but maybe I'm a bit nitpicky :)
Anyway, this is very nice sprite. Keep up your good work - you're pretty skillful spriter, buddy!

The original is here: (http://i.imgur.com/i9H4W.png) (and the topic: http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/Forum_345/index.php?topic=36314.0 )

Later I'll post how I fixed it.

Here's the unorganized sprite edit process:

I wouldn't mind making sprites for this guy, if only I had decent rips/screenshots from U/MvC3.

Sorry for the double post.

Before starting on this project, please give me all the feedback you can on the sprite. I'm considering turning him into a w.i.p. so I need a good base to start.
If you missed it, the sprite is this:

Is his height okay?

I like it but... I still think it's short.

What about using Steamboy's base? (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/170/e/9/phoenix_wright_by_steamboy33-d544nt9.png)
Or Shin Otaru's version? (http://i.imgur.com/Gq5PXCx.gif)

Hmmm, I'd say Alex should go with Steamboy's version. Since he's doing it in CPS2 form, it would make a better base for proportions and shading rather than ShinOtaru's CvS sprite (which looks mundanely perfect, IMO). I say make him wider by a pixel or 2, so it could be similar to Steamboy's rendition.

Anyways, Phoenix Wright is one of my fav. Capcom characters of all time. Hearing the possibility of you taking up a project like this actually puts a smile on my face. Good luck! :)

CPS2 or CvS, I'll cry lawyer tears of joy if you really start on a Phoenix Wright project.

On the sprite though, I feel his hair could be a little spikier, and he skin looks a tad too yellow. And yeah, Steamboy's sprite is a wonderful reference.

Thanks for the comments everybody.
So let's start answering all of them:
I like it but... I still think it's short.

What about using Steamboy's base? (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/170/e/9/phoenix_wright_by_steamboy33-d544nt9.png)
Or Shin Otaru's version? (http://i.imgur.com/Gq5PXCx.gif)

Steamboy's sprite was the first that came to my mind (never heard about Shin Otaru's). The thing is that I want him to have the right height and width in game, some of Steamboy sprites aren't of the right size, also it uses too many colours GoodAldo is going to kill me. :XD: I want to make the sprite in true CPS2 style (or very close).
From the wikis I read that Ryu is 175 cm tall and Phoenix is 176 cm tall. My sprite (sprite edit) is being too tall even:
I'm not trying to defend myself from the feedback, if it's needed I can fix him right away, that's not a problem. If you can show me I'm wrong, I'm here to fix it. :) This goes for everybody.

Hmmm, I'd say Alex should go with Steamboy's version. I concur, Shin Otaru's sprite is really good, but I'm not going to make him in CvS style. Steamboy will be a reference for a lot of stuff I might have trouble with, but I'm not sure about the proportions. Because of what I said before.

Do you want to read a funny thing?
I never played the games, so this can be a reason to start. :D Facepalm worthy, right?

CPS2 or CvS, I'll cry lawyer tears of joy if you really start on a Phoenix Wright project.

On the sprite though, I feel his hair could be a little spikier, and he skin looks a tad too yellow. And yeah, Steamboy's sprite is a wonderful reference.

I can move those two pixels up a bit and change the palette.

Thanks again.

Man, if you never played Phoenix Wright games, then you are really missing out, because the games are so good, and something I would really recommend to try out. But if you are unable to do it (or simply just not interested), I could always provide my point of view as a PW fan to your project. After all, I've played nearly every game so far, with only Dual Destinies and vs Professor Layton left~

Back to the sprite though, I feel his hands are a tad too small. Phoenix is known for having quite a big hand (if not just a big finger), so I recommend that you make them bigger. Same goes to the shoes, they look pretty small in there, and even though you don't see his legs often in PW games, I do remember they are a little big.

One thing I did like about Steamboy's sprite (and kind of Shin Otaru's sprite as well) is that, height aside, the sprite managed to capture a pretty good PW feeling to it while still maintaining the CPS2 appearance. I say that due to the folds and wrinkles in some parts of his clothes, something that you will see quite often in official PW art:

Right now, I feel the clothes in your sprite look a little bit too clean, so if you could apply said details to it, I feel it would make Phoenix a lot more like himself, in terms of appearance.

I remade the sprite completely, but I'm mad at the fact I can't get his face right (it's terrible)! And what about the folds?
Requesting feedback for this one:
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/PWsprite.png~original)(http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/170/e/9/phoenix_wright_by_steamboy33-d544nt9.png)

By the way, yes, I used Steamboy's sprite as a reference for a lot of things. Screw the palette limit.

I just noticed the hands are small too. >:(

Wait, I think I'm making the face better now. I'm still tweaking it.

I actually do like the face he made because it feel more profile view. The only thing I would try changing at most would perhaps erase a pixel or two from his face outlining, as it does appears to be a little bit thick... that and his crotch seems a bit too low, but I guess that's about it. I pretty much love the sprite as it is right now~

Yeah, just follow MotorRoach's sprite, and you'll have an Ace Attorney ready to kick ass. Also, are you gonna sprite him some new moves, or will you take the entire UMvC3 movelist and sprite those attacks?

First I have to sprite his UMvC3 attacks... if I get those screenshots... then... who knows?

By the way, I'm playing the first game, I think I'm in the last episode (the one after the credits). A very good game that I played all yesterday and today. ;D

In case there isn't anybody available, I'll see if I can get a friend of mine to help me with recording his attacks from UMvC3, because I'm just too hyped.

By the way, good to hear you're enjoying the PW series so far. It'll help you get a good idea of Phoenix's "fighting" style~

The head looks great, and I see no problems with it. The neck feels too lines, however, and could have a bit of brightening to give it a bit of more depth. I'm not entirely sure about the chest, since I can see much of it, so I suppose it's fine. The vest, on the other hand, feels very bland and flat, and needs a better sense of shape along the upper body, in which you will likely need to fix in both the shading and it's shape. The arms feel way too skinny, as if he barely had any meat on his arms, which hardly matches the thickness of his legs, and not to mention the connection to the hand is very awkward. While we are at it, the hands themselves are way too tiny, and if you want to know, men tend to have quite big hands, as it's part of the male human anatomy.  The shorts look alright, although I think the bottom of them could be rounded a bit, but just a little bit.

I have a really hard time trying to understand what you did on the legs, but I just don't know what you did with it, and it feels awkward, mostly on his right (our left) leg, specially since his knee has brightening out of nowhere and that weird dot on it. The other leg is more so fine, but I still don't get what you tried with that shading on the middle of his leg, and I'd probably try to move his knees up a bit. And finally, the feet are way too small. Just like how men have big hands, they are also meant to have quite big feet.

It's still a very nice attempt for trying to sprite something from scratch, you're certainly improving~

Is it just me or do the knee-caps look like enlarged nipples or something??
Aside from that I think you could add a few folds to the shorts, maybe add a teeensy weensy bit of definition to the arms. Nothing much, man. But I'm impressed, I'd really like to see more sprites in that style :)

I have no idea for what style you were going for, but anti aliasing is never a mistake. You really need to work on your colour palette too! the blue and the orange is WAY too bright. Also it really helps to draw from humans  - get a feeling for a good pose and try to draw it with some reference, the more you'll do the better you will get at these things - same goes for muscles :)

also a thing I also missed doing - set a good lightsource and try to work from there (using only the base colour and a shadow colour) to get the feeling of how it would look like in 3D.

it is great to see you practice! you got a lot of potential!
Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: Graphicus on January 08, 2015, 11:46:17 pm
The only criticism I can think of is that the sprite's a bit too busy for its size (specifically around the face/chest area). I would suggest going for a cleaner look. Please note that this could very well be a lack of contrast (i.e. a color issue). If that's the case, then as you mentioned, it can wait until you address the issue with the colors.

There are a few other things related to anatomy, but that could very well just be a style you're going for so I won't mention it unless you're interested.

I split the fedback in different points so I can answer each one.
I also left out the compliments and although I appreciate them it seems I still have a long way to go.
1- The head looks great, and I see no problems with it.

2- The neck feels too lines, however, and could have a bit of brightening to give it a bit of more depth.

3- I'm not entirely sure about the chest, since I can see much of it, so I suppose it's fine.

6- While we are at it, the hands themselves are way too tiny, and if you want to know, men tend to have quite big hands, as it's part of the male human anatomy.

7- The shorts look alright, although I think the bottom of them could be rounded a bit, but just a little bit.

9- The other leg is more so fine, but I still don't get what you tried with that shading on the middle of his leg,

10- and I'd probably try to move his knees up a bit.

11- And finally, the feet are way too small. Just like how men have big hands, they are also meant to have quite big feet.
12- Is it just me or do the knee-caps look like enlarged nipples or something??

Again, this might just be a personal preference of mine, but:

20- The head's slightly small.

21- Character's left leg is a bit tube-like

22- Character's right foot needs a bit of work

23- Hands need some work

24- Lights and shadows seem to be all over the place?

25- Arms seem to be a bit skinny (lacking muscle definition) for a guy with a six pack and such huge legs

Long but good list.

DISCLAIMERS :P (well, this is what I wanted to do)
First of all the lightsource is above him (imagine CvS). Then I wanted to make the sprites with strong outlines, but I could change my mind and just leave the colour limit to twenty + one. The colours are placeholders, like I said. Heh, the colours come from the colour separation of CvSKyo. The jacket will of course be blue, not that cyan, that's too much. This style was meant to have characters with realistic proportions while being a bit cartoon-ish.

Okay, the answers:
1- I agree the head came out very good. It's a miracle!
2- I understand the brightening part but not the "it feels too lines" part, I'm sorry; did you mean it's too straight? Too dark?
3- I think the shapes are fine, but I can look into it, perhaps remove the necklace/pendant thing and add it later, also adjust the shading a bit.
4- I'll study jackets from various pictures. :)
5- The arms, your comment is spot-on, they feel skinny. Damn I'm bad with proportions, I think they're too long too.
6- I always make the hands smaller than they should be. That's my problem. I'll look into it.
7- Ok.
8- I wanted to outlines his muscles (think Urien) but now that I think about it there's no room for that sort of stuff and the knees are not like that. I thought the knee received light from above but unless he has a mutant knee (which I don't want him to have) he shouldn't be like that.
9- I thought the light could hit the knee if it was a bit bent like that, and about the calf, don't mind that, that's a mistake.
10- Hmmm, yes, I can do that.
11- That too.

12- Hahahah! I'm dumb. :XD:
13- Ok.
14- Yes, right now he doesn't have much. I'll add a bit of detail.

15- I see. About the anti-alias, I didn't want to use it much; this is how I wanted to use the colours: light, shadow, and darker details (think like SFA style, but with very little-to-none anti-alias. But this is being reconsidered.
16- Man, I told you the colours were too bright! :XD: I'm messing with you, I'm not mad. Some of them will be darkened, like the jacket and the shoes (which use the same colours as the hair).
17- Since when I made that sprite I tried to draw bodies and faces, I may upload them in deviantArt. I just have to check more references.
18- That's what I did, but I failed in some instances.

19- The necklace and pendant are getting in the way, maybe I'll remove them.
20- I'm actually fine with it being of that size.
21 & 22- Ok, I'll fix them.
23- I've addressed that.
24- My fault. I'll adjust them.
25- Ok.

About the abs, if you noticed, they're coloured grey because that's an iron-like material. It's like part of an armor. I'm not saying it to justify myself, just wanted to clear some doubts.

What a long post!

Athena Midnight Bliss. Credits to @zero de armentis: for the first sprites (stand and first frame where she's grabbed), which I used as a base to make the others. You can also see a comparison between his animation (on the right) and my edit (on the left).

Nice touchup to the hands on the standing sprite there as well. Minor compared to some the other changes but thought it was worth mentioning.

It's a good sprite in the color distribution and technique sense, but she lacks personality. The pose needs to be a bit more stylized for it to scream Kula.

Edit: I mean something like this:

Hmm... I don't like the look of it. I'm not really sure what you're trying to go for here with this. The coloring/shading on her outfit looks smudged and odd to me. The face is ok, but the hair looks flat and the hands need some work as well. I suggest rescaling KoF13 Kula and working from there. Felo did it with Ash and got great results. Or perhaps you could edit Zero's stance of her. As his is kinda overly skinny, but that's the only thing that's wrong with his.
Title: Re: Alex S. / G.o.D. sprites
Post by: AlexSin on June 02, 2015, 04:43:48 pm
I'll fix the hair and the hands. The hands were very difficult to do and I knew they weren't good but I was tired of remaking them.

I'm not going to use a KoFXIII sprite to make mine. I looked at the different works where they used KoFXIII sprites (like the K' by walt and the others, I don't remember now) and they don't look CvS-styled (sorry walt, I don't mean to offend). Same thing for Felo's Ash.
I can tell you my sprite doesn't look CvS-styled either (although it was my intention at first).

Here's the worksheet if you want to see how I worked: http://god-of-death-alex.deviantart.com/art/Kula-worksheet-536997911

walt, that's exactly the contrary of what I've done.
I'll take that into account for the fix.

For the record, one thing I've noticed over the years is that people wish to re-shade other style sprites with 2 base colors + Antialiasing + outline and call it "CVS Style", but Capcom's style goes far beyond that. What makes their games so rich visually is the solid art direction, and like all art, it depends on the artists hands. CVS / Capcom Sprites are all about the lines, the style, the curves, the bold poses, the anime looks. So, for starters, anything that wants to be called CVS needs at least good bases. Shading doesn't make 100% sprite. In this case, judging by your process, you weren't even exactly making a CVS sprite, you just used one to compare sizes side by side, but it feels more like your sprite is meant to be a rendition of the Big Piece you used as reference, in sprite form. That I can understand.

Regarding the KOF XIII to CVS method, well, that's your opinion :nice:  I really didn't make the K' sprites, it was Dampir ... I just laid the blueprint on how it should be done, because everybody was beating aroudn the bush with theidea, but no one put it to action before :sweatdrop:  IMO KOF XIII is the closest any KOF game has come to the bold lines and style I describe, that in the end make the CVS style, that's why I proposed the experiment. With the right palette applied, in the videos I've seen K' looks awesome IMO. Felo makes Felo style sprites, not exactly CVS imo :P  The only person I've seen come close to a true CVS style, because of the bold lines and style is Judas. Sean Altly comes pretty close, but lacks more personality in the lines and poses, he has the coloring technique down IMO, even more so than Dampir. Me? I don't do CVS :)

What about meeeee, Mr. Fast? :P

Jokes aside, I really think Alex should have kept Kula's original leg pose, the one you made looks weird in my eyes to be honest, the way her legs we're originally positioned gave it an anime-ish vibe, and some personality; the way Alex did it kinda looks bland.

For shading, try looking at zero de armentis', his looks really good IMO. :)

Don't mind me, just touching things up like I tend to do so.

I didn't really go much for editing her shading, I just wanted to change her pose and make her proportions feel a bit more accurate to her character. I imagine her with anything but a stiff standing pose.

Oh my my my~ I like the looks of Kula here, definitely looks a lot better than she does in the official games. I don't know why they went with that style for her at all, it seems out of place with the rest of the characters. But I think you did a fine job on her~ ^^

Would love to see you sprite more often, you're really good at it heh. ^^

I don't think it hurts to ask. I mean, you are going to go through all the hard work of turning all of that into decent quality sprite work, so asking about the screenshots for it shouldn't really be a bad thing.

By the way, nice Athena animation, pretty smooth.

The last time I asked him I had to wait for... let's see... about two months.
I got tired of waiting. :P Also, I think he's too busy with his own works, project and real life, so I would have to wait for two other months. beximus, no hard feelings if you read this.

@Genesis: for this (http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/general-spriting-inquiriestips-and-technique-i-guess-167489.0.html)
I started with some stickmans, then I outlined them and filled them. I work better in flat colours, then I add the details. I still haven't finished it and cleaned it yet (and don't know if I will) but at least I'm learning a bit.
No face because I intend to use the one in the first frame (with edits of course). Her right knee is too high.

I apologize on the lateness(was pm vacation :P)

That anim looks pretty nice so far.
Maybe in the future I could just try to make a new stance altogether for her. That frame could be used as the landing frame maybe? The high knee is bothering me now that you've pointed it out lol.

Approx. how long did it take for the "fast" Vegeta sprite?

About half an hour. Maybe a bit more.

Little update on that anim: (I'm not working on it at the moment, I did this a week ago)

(and now her legs are getting fatter :( )
I thought about that too. It could be a landing sprite, from a dash punch attack.

It took a lot of time to do this, not much for the dithering (thanks to the clipboard and fill tool), but for the hands and feet. I'm trying to master a method to make and animate sprites.

Open the spoiler for the process:
Spoiler: Process (click to see content)
End result:

(I didn't understand the shading on the original sprite, but I kept it: I know Mystique has scales on her body, I wasn't referring to that.)

Don't request for something to be made.

I left the process so you can see how I made it. Look at it and try to do something similar.
Like I said in your wip topic, you have to redraw the frames; you shouldn't cut and move parts of the sprite like that, because the result you get is unnatural.

There are other methods you could use to make your sprites, like:
http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/character-assembly-line-168418.0.html
http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/the-making-of-tekken-megaman-sprite/

I followed Jazza to make the animation (although I didn't do exactly as he said because I had something in mind already):

About the eye, that's exactly what I did in one of my steps, but then I edited it to look a bit more serious, so I closed it a bit more. I think having it like that gives a cartoon-y impression, thing I don't really see in this character.
The nose edit is very good. :)
Regarding the hair, Sean changed his character a bit for SHADES 3, so I don't know, I may look into it.

I started this sprite because I had seen and adjusted Balthazar's Snow sprite:
it's mostly just a face edit.

Yes, I understand. I had the same problem while editing that eye, that's why I added the shadow, because I think it made it look more subtle :P I'm glad you like his nose though :)

Yep, good point, but well, the hair looked different in the big portrait anyway ;D

I like the new face, it looks a lot better and more like him, IMO :)

Upper gi. IDK it looks too width for me :P
You know CVS2 gi was a bit more closed.

EDIT

That was, the left side was too baggy, comparing from the shoulder gi part to de abs gi part :P
Also, the right pant was too width too, and it missed light in the upper gi(under the belt)

In this case the word is "wide", not "width". I knew you were going to point that out, but I think it's fine the way it is. (http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u402/GodofDeath94/cvsryu.png)

If spherical shading, maybe in a cross-hatched manner? The cross-hatched look for pencil shading always seemed appealing, but that's up to you.

But spherical shading would do it justice, like what Engine Bug said :P

It looks great, but the eyes in the 3rd/4th frames should be looking towards the opponent, because it currently looks like he's breaking the 4th wall and looking at you (in a fight you don't turn your eyes away from your opponent, right? :P).

Other than that, please continue doing Saitama animations, or I'll bring a whip and force you into a slave ship :whip:

The latter. Also because I heard Hien won't do these.

I know, I know. There's still a lot to fix.

Make a headless stance too and then give him his head separately. Making it so he tracks the opponent. Looking up, down, and behind him. The turn anim should be used less often. Randomly and before he punches at an opponent behind him.

Edit: yes I know you're not developing said character. That's just the info you'd give the developers

also, just to add something, here's other stuff I posted in other topics for help:

Looks great Alex. That stick approach really works well for ya.

Maybe you can give his boots a bit more detail in the future?

Late, but thanks.

Well, that comes if I want to work on him again. But I intentionally made them not detailed for animating him, I have some ideas but I don't know if I'm going to show them here (or if I end up making them at all).

If I ever get around doing that, I'll also fix his anatomy.

Anyway, here we go with another collection of sprite and sprite edits (mostly these) I've made until now:
Spoiler: stuff (click to see content)

Here's something new (:-\ I didn't do much this time)
I made this (today, in 10 minutes from scratch) because I saw Raneri editing YamoriX's Lilith small portrait (http://mugenguild.com/forum/msg.2243804).

I know, in some places the lines move too much, but I'm not going to touch it.
Yeah, it's something random I wanted to do.

Two movements with the same leg. I think the second is better, but I kept the first too.

And... I guess these go here too:

And another small portrait:

The first frame (sketch) screamed "old man" so I had to do this.

And you should never post that way in the forums.

Well, since you are accepting suggestions...

Could be curious to see you trying to sprite a non-fighter character into a 2d style.

Like Max Caulfield or Chloe Price from Life is Strange. For a strange reason, I believe the style of both of those characters could fit with your spriting style :)

The proportions on the nameless character look pretty decent. My only issue with it is that his left (our righT) hand seemsto have rather short fingers (not including the thumb), and I feel the shading on his knuckles overdetails his hand too much, so I would take that out.

- My only issue with it is that his left (our right) hand seems to have rather short fingers (not including the thumb),
- and I feel the shading on his knuckles overdetails his hand too much, so I would take that out.
- The finger issue can be fixed by moving them one pixel down.
- I removed the light on the end of the fingers' visible phalanges since it's actually not needed, but I honestly like the rest, since it is closer to the viewer I wanted to give it more details to the knuckles.

I'm worried about the size of the hand though, should it be bigger?

Depends on what you are going for. If you want a "fist coming right at you effect", then yeah, make it bigger. Otherwise, it looks fine.

Unless someone is specifically open to requests, don't request shit from anyone.

I like it, dithered shadow's a nice throwback to oldie games.

I'd have used the darkest outline on the left viewer hand, on the part where it connects to the arm, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality shown.
