Title: CvTW Sonic the Hedgehog Beta (by SeanAltly and HyperSonic) (Updated 3/12/13}

Surprise! Public release beta of Capcom vs. The World Sonic the Hedgehog!

If you're familiar with the CvTW gameplay style, you'll be right at home. Otherwise, there's an explanation in the ReadMe.

Notes:

-No AI yet, I focus on it last
-Has a few winquotes, just to give him something to say
-CvTW-style (4 buttons, "S" button, grab button, UT, etc.)
-No EX Moves yet, he may not need them
-Item Box system for his UT, should provide some great nostalgia and create unique gameplay options
-Voice used is Jason Griffith, from SSBB and Sonic '06
-Is a BETA, I've given him so many options and moves, I know he's got to have some bugs or an infinite or two that I haven't found
-In his .cmd you'll find a commented out super move labeled "Tails," this is a super move I made and then decided he didn't need, but if you want to see it, just un-comment it and comment out the move labeled "tornado" since they use the same command

He doesn't work in Winmugen, as you're using 1.0 constants.

He's great, like, really great.
You were very creative with this one, and the result is very nice. :)

No bug found yet. He's a keeper for sure.

I found Sonic surprisingly easy to learn. Great work, as usual.

The only complaint I have is that I find the bubble very easy to abuse.

This has been a most-wanted dream character of mine for a while now. From the looks of things it doesn't appear like he'll require EX attacks. You and Hypersonic really delivered, hopefully I'll be able to check him out soon.

  • can't mash to increase hits for LP Spin Dash
  • water shield can't perform its item super nevermind :ninja:
  • I think it would make more sense to use a classic Sonic jump sound for Sonic Slash (Sonic 3 would work best I guess, given the shields)
  • the current sound for instashield seems pretty odd to me, maybe the one from the games will fit better?

-It says in the ReadMe that it can't be revved up, but it has less start-up and different hit properties.
-lol
-You're talking about DP+K, right? He's spinning and pauses in the air in an almost buzz-saw type of motion, so I figured the sound it has fit better.
-I have all the Sonic 3 sounds and the sound for the instashield is so generic I honestly can't tell which sound it is (they're just labeled by numbers), so I used a sort of electric sound instead.

Thanks for the feedback.

Will definitely be releasing a palette pack for him too (i'll update it if needed later on), thanks for the release he definitely looks fun to use.

@drox-dj
Maybe just by looking at that screenshot, check his .def file and make sure his .snd file is present, it should be as it is in mine.

-It says in the ReadMe that it can't be revved up, but it has less start-up and different hit properties.
It wasn't there the first time I read it, honest!

-You're talking about DP+K, right? He's spinning and pauses in the air in an almost buzz-saw type of motion, so I figured the sound it has fit better.
Well, the reason I say it would fit is that the move behaves a lot like his jump from the games (though fixed to one angle, of course). Plus, you gotta include the jump sound somewhere!

-I have all the Sonic 3 sounds and the sound for the instashield is so generic I honestly can't tell which sound it is (they're just labeled by numbers), so I used a sort of electric sound instead.
It just feels pretty out of place to me, IMO.

I want to say it's at 0:48.

EDIT: I looked around on youtube and the few videos of it I can't even hear a sound for it. o_O

It should be audible in this video at 3:53-3:54. I think it is the same sound as the one in the video C-G-U linked at 0:48-0:50.

Well, beyond the bubble shield being abusable in corner blockstrings because you can do it over and over again and Sonic will bounce upwards, and multiple air dashes being possible(the former is the confirmed issue I'd think.) But yes, this character is fun to mess around with, and I hope this kind of quality continues to come out. Like you're herding meteors of creativity and smashing them up, taking the best and doing reasonable things with it. Either way, cool stuff!

Sonic's great, but why did you use Jason Griffith's voice for Sonic? Roger Craig Smith would have been better... I personally don't like Griffith (I know Griffith fans would hate me, but oh well!) Hopefully when Sonic gets updated maybe reconsider about changing Sonic's voice? it's very annoying, but it's all up to you though your the creator of Sonic.  As far as gameplay goes, to my knowledge Sonic seems to fight great for a beta!
Title: Re: CvTW Sonic the Hedgehog Beta (by SeanAltly and HyperSonic)
Post by: MightyKombat on March 11, 2013, 11:33:27 am
As great as Roger is there isn't really much vocals of him to use for a fighting game engine (Though it could be possible if you wing it)

Same with Ryan Drummond. And Jaleel White I suppose.

Post by: Sean Altly on March 11, 2013, 01:54:50 pm
Exactly, the SSBB clips are more suited for a fighting game, and there was a lot more resources available to me that used Griffith's voice.

I was warned that Sonic fans get weird about his voice actor, so I will say this ONE time to be very clear: His voice is staying the way it is. Further comments about whether I'm going to change it or will I please use someone else or whatever will only be replied to with a quote of the above statement, if at all.

People can make sound patches if they want to change it bad enough.

-When I do his SS super full screen, he moves off screen during startup...
(http://i50.tinypic.com/2z9jfax.png)
looks odd imo.
-In regards to his SS startup, I thought I saw HyperSonic make an anim where the Chaos Emeralds appear around him like in SSBB. It hits during startup in SSBB, setting up juggles if up close. Something you may consider adding.
-Still addressing his SS super. You may also want to consider putting p2 in a simple custom state when hit. To set the size of their clsns when hit, since of course, clsns vary from char to char. I saw once that the super did a maximum of 415 damage, but I only got that value like twice. Every other time, it did around 350-370 damage.
-His super cancels feel very limited, that may be due to him still being in beta state, so disregard if that is so. But a lot of times I do something like: (Fire shield on)running spin dash > rising spin dash > try to cancel it into his fire dash super, but it doesn't work... That's just one of many though.
-Feels like the Spinball super and SS super should be able to be done in the air also.

I really like him a lot. Very well done and creative work. One more thing that really isn't related, I'm just extremely lucky... The first two times I used the Item Box move, I got invincibility both times! :D But haven't gotten it again since... :(

Tiny, tiny thing, but there's a small spriting error on the regular and fire shield's item box. There's a few pixels missing on the right (viewer's right) side of the monitor.

-Yeah, my bad, I had the screenbound sctrl activating too early. I just fixed it so it doesn't activate until after the superpause.
-HyperSonic made a sprite of the chaos emerald and included palettes for 7 of them, but not a whole animation like you're talking about. I may add it for visual flare but I probably won't make it hit. The super is already really fast and powerful, I don't want to break it.
-I may do this in the future.
- I didn't include a lot of Super Cancels outside of normals. The example you included would only work with air supers anyway since the Sonic Slash special isn't active until it's in the air. I'll look into it, though I don't think he really needs them much.
-Maybe the SS one, but I like the way he plants his feet and takes off for the Spinball super, so I'll probably leave that as is.

Thanks for the feedback, and yeah, the boxes are weird like that, nature of the random trigger I guess.

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

@Sean
Just curious, his cyclone/tornado special can link to itself via wallbounce, it's a bit tricky to do it against himself, but I tried it against CM Punk and it was easier. Not a game breaker or anything, it can do a hefty bit of damage though, I don't think it can link together more than twice at least.

I know. He can do the Fire Charge super in the air. That's the example I was giving. Feels like he should be able to super cancel from his rising spin dash special. Especially with the Fire Shield on with that super imo.

I think he should be able to air combo into his fire shield super though, like he does with the special.

He can combo from any air normal into the Super. Just not any specials. I will add some more combo options though ( it should only take a few minutes) and put up an update, with a few fixes from the thread and a bug a friend of mine found with the Bubble Shield special.

That's what I mean, he can't combo into the super from his normal air attacks. The super just misses.

Thanks for updating him, will definitely let you know if I find anything else. Also I realize one thing if he ends up having no EX moves, he reminds me of Akuma in third strike, due to the low health and lack of ex moves.

On a serious note though, if I wanted to add him into the CvtW game, I'm assuming he'll work properly so long as I copy the UTbar file from someone else into his .def right?

Also wanted to ask if you've seen MotorRoach's Sonic sprite, may be interesting to contact him if he's willing to co-operate and help you out (if you need it that is).

Small thing, but in the read me you could add that Lightning Shield also recovers rings to fill his life back up.

SS has 2 things odd about it.
-  If the opponent is in the middle of the screen to near Sonic's corner when SS happens, the opponent won't be able to block after the first hit (unless you can time it on the turn around after block stun)
-  If SS is done while Sonic has a shield up and the opponent attacks him, the shield is gone and Sonic stops the move.

@CGU

No, you'd need a bit more than that. If you want to add him, go ahead, here's quick list of what you'd need to do:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Also, I've seen his sprites and they're great, but Hypersonic worked hard on these and I worked hard on editing them, so I'll stick with these. HyperSonic came through where others haven't (with a whole, completed spritesheet). If MotorRoach decides to make an entire set, I'm sure someone will make good use of them.

@Ejectok

It's not supposed to in my version, just a quick invincible attack, but that's not a bad idea. I may add that in the future.

@Senorfro

Hmm, I'll look into those. I was aware of the block issue but forgot to fix it, but not the shield problem. Should be an easy fix. Thanks!

I am having the same issue. The new snd file doesn't help at all. The only way I can get it running on my Mugen 1.0 is to ignore the sound file line in the def.
However, I tried inserting him into CvTW and that worked without an issue.

^happened with someone else as well, don't know if they solved it, if not try the Roger Smith sound patch by Zaibatsu (in link below)
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

@Sean
Just curious, his cyclone/tornado special can link to itself via wallbounce, it's a bit tricky to do it against himself, but I tried it against CM Punk and it was easier. Not a game breaker or anything, it can do a hefty bit of damage though, I don't think it can link together more than twice at least.

Capcom vs. The World doesn't have superjumps or guard pushes. Adding those to your own is fine, but I won't be adding them to the official release.

Also, for the .snd issues some are having, I have no idea what the problem is. It works fine on my end and is working for most people, so I don't know what to do about it.

Looked into this some more, has something to do with guarddist or something of that nature, because once Sonic gets far enough away the opponent drops the guard state and starts walking (if they're still holding back). I can offer a temporary fix and say that if you're on the receiving end of it, doing a crouching guard works from what I can tell.

EDIT: I think I just fixed the issue using guard.ctrltime. I'll include it in the next update.

Geese (By pots) is able to Joudan Atemi Nage (counter) Super Sonic . I was playing against his AI and he time it right lol.

Just wanted to point something in relation to the above point Sean, I tried it against CM Punk and it doesn't get interrupted, however against Mr. X, if he does his stronger counter Super, Sonic stops dead in his tracks immeadiately. Don't mind it personally, but just thought you might want to know. More importantly is that against Mr. X when I got the "invincibility" box a grab from Mr. X (don't think it was a super) went through anyhow, which kept the power-up music playing, but the power-up "sparkle" sprites completely vanished after this.

I have yet to try Sonic in CvtW against Superman or Jill's counter moves yet to see if it has the same or similar effect, and also thanks, the code you told me to use makes him work perfect in your game.

This happens because it's a counter and the Super Sonic move is flagged as HA(Hyper Attack). There may be a way to override this...but, that's up to Sean if he wants to. Geese's high counter can counter physical super moves, no matter how powerful they are. Same for his Lv3, Raging Dead End.

That is a conundrum. Perhaps I can just put in a stop sound trigger to make sure the music stops and otherwise leave it as is. I could completely remove blue clsns from the animation, but there would still be a pause and an attempt to counter, it would just miss (which might cause problems). I'll definitely make sure none of the characters in CvTW can counter it, but otherwise I'm not sure what else to do.

I would say for the public release, remove the music just to prevent the issue. In your fullgame keep the sound effect in place, since you said you're going to make sure it can't be countered.

There was this random bug that showed up, not sure what the exact trigger was, but I put Sub-Zero in training mode, and made him constantly grab. If I walked into him while also using Sonic's UT, sometimes just right before the grab Sonic would summon the item box but it would be invisible. Out of the times I tried it, it happened very, very rarely, but it was strange.

Also going back to Sonic's, Super Sonic special, Superman can counter it with his counter-super move...and this I dunno, it seems acceptable. There are only a few characters who can counter anyhow right? being Jill, Mr. X, Superman, CM Punk, not sure who else.

Not sure if the .SND problem has been solved yet.  I had it as well and have had it before with some chars.  It usually means one of the sound wave files is corrupted - not sure how it happens, but its definitely not just me.

In Fighter Factory I found that sound 25 of 110 is corrupted (at least for some) I replaced it and sonic now works for me.

Hope that helps the folks with the same problem!

I'll upload a fix soon, but for those who don't want to wait, do as he said above and delete sound 25 (labeled 9, 2). That should solve the problem.

I was going to wait until the new beta to give full feedback but after playing around with him, I can say that there's no notable issues with Sonic that I can actually find, I mean the speed dash is pretty cheap though when the opponent is in the corner, but that's about it. He plays exactly how he's designed, which is what it's all about.  :thumbsup:

Well seeing as How Sean got mad at Omega for doing a Roger Craig Smith voice pack, I'll hold off on the Ryan Drummond (he was sonic's first non-tv US voice actor from Adventure  - Heroes) voice pack for a while both out of respect for Sean and the fact that He'll probably be releasing an update in the near future making  modifying the voice pack a little moot anyway.

I just didn't like the way he worded it when he released it. He has since edited it, but the original post said something like "I changed it because I couldn't stand the voice, and I'm sure none of you could either." I just told him that was kind of messed up, I never told him he couldn't or shouldn't make a voice pack. You guys can make all the voice packs you want, I don't care. I was warned by MC2 that Sonic fans are psychos picky about their voice actors, so I decided early to not worry about it.

Hey Sean, have you thought about Sonic's "Emerald Dive" move from Sonic the fighters? It's basically sort of looks like the sprites used in Sonic CD for when Sonic jumps off of a spring and spins looking up before falling down. However, in Sonic the Fighters it's done by sonic jumping and it's horizontal. It causes damage if it hits.  The command in Sonic the Fighters is Half circle down +PK iirc.

Oh and I have a number of Sonic character voices if you want them. Most of them are from Heroes and Adventure DX though.

Also, about Shadow... He's a pretty controversial Sonic character. In fact, he's well known for causing arguments among fans. Trust me, it's probably good you decided not to do him for that very reason.  I personally don't have anything against him other than the whole "Am I a clone?" thing. He's not a clone of the original Shadow (and is in fact the original shadow.)  but naturally that storyline pissed off a lot of old time fans.

Fans liked Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2 and some feel him returning in Heroes was kind of bad story telling and just service to the newer fans of the series.  They also felt that bringing shadow back made his supposed death in SA2 dishonorable and pointless.

Figured I'd tell those of you interested that my Ryan Drummand voicepack for Sonic is done and uploaded. It's in the add-ons section. Maybe now all the Sonic fans can get along happily without the voice actor argument. Well.... unless your a fan of Junichi Kanemaru, Sonic's Japanese voice actor anyway.... Some Sonic fans are.  And my apologies if this seems like an attempt to advertize in someone else's thread. It wasn't my intention at all.

Getting back on topic of the character:
I still think you should do Emerald Dive for Sonic Sean but it is your character. Just seems to me that it would work since he used it in Sonic the Fighters as his hyper mode move.

From a gameplay perspective, would it serve a function that no other move does? I never did his Dive Kick from SSBB because he already has the LP version of Homing Attack, and Dive Kick would have been redundant/essentially the same move. If so, can you link me to a video of the move? I have Sonic Gems Collection but I haven't hooked up my Wii in months, so a video would be much easier to deal with. To be frank, if it doesn't add to his (already relatively complex) gameplay, I don't see much of a point.

I really think he already has a well-rounded moveset with a lot of stuff going on (i.e., the Item Box system that adds specials and supers). If it would genuinely compliment his gameplay, than I'll consider it.

EDIT: Also, before anyone chimes in, I don't mind if he plugs his voice pack here. Anything to keep people from complaining about the voice I gave him is fine by me. :P

I'll see if I can find a video of emerald dive. http://youtu.be/BdBoUj2Pv7k here's a video. I've also marked the time it's used so it should start from there.  The Metal Sonic boss in Fighters uses a duplicate of it btw.  Actually, come to think of it, Metal Sonic steals a lot of attacks from other characters in that game.

^you forgot to put the starting time for the move correctly, but I found it anyhow - http://youtu.be/BdBoUj2Pv7k?t=5m10s

Personally I think it just doesn't seem necessary after looking at it, mostly because spin dash does essentially the same thing, and something using a similar animation would basically be his level 3 Super Sonic move.

Maybe you should talk to Cybaster and Balthazar and have some funny intros with thier dbz character just an idea but this character looks great very original and for once people aren't using the overly mentioned and used "POTS" style going to test this character out now I'll go look for bugs and glitches thoroughly It's my job as a guild member
