Title: Beavis
Post by: The_None on December 21, 2013, 10:54:12 pm
(http://justnopoint.com/lbends/mugen/beavis1.png)
Your eyes are not deceiving. I've somehow managed to improve a bit as a spriter, simplistic artstyle aside.
So anyway, being a guy who feels like moving on to producing originally sprited content, I chose everyone's favorite dumbass metalhead as a graphics practice. Early reports state that, few cut corners there and there aside, I've somehow managed to nail the Mike Judge artstyle, all with my prowess of tracing and vectors. Not like that would be a guarantee that I would churn out even better looking custom characters, but if I would, then my 2014 is certainly shaping to be interesting.

Get him here (http://justnopoint.com/lbends/), and uh... Happy Double Holidays, I'd guess.... heh-heh.

Thanks for yet another solid share. December has a lot of solid contenders for CotM. :2thumbsup:

lemme just publicly say that being able to even contribute to this character at all (like various sounds and referential palettes (http://www.melv.thedailypos.org/palettes/duh/bebius/referencedirectory/)) was an honor and i'm still utterly surprised that an idea that we thought would take like a year to come to fruition took maybe about a month. i envy your light-speed production rate, not to mention the creativity as the icon baseball super has to be one of the best supers i've seen

that being said if i see anything odd i'll let ya know

This is great stuff!
Love the Merry Go Bye Bye super and the MvC style messages, the Johnny Cage like low punch and the DIVE KICK styled Mind BLowing Decisions!

 - double jump & superjump is not in the readme
 - small portrait looks kinda bad
 - no voice or music while taunting?
 - Nitpicking - No "Metallica" text on the shirt?

Hope to see Butt-head too!

Absolutely... you nailed it,  None.

Minus the Metallica across the chest...
Title: Re: Beavis
Post by: Saikoro on December 22, 2013, 02:08:22 am
Umm... the whole Metallica thing would look backwards when facing left, which is probably why he didn't include it. Unless if he sprited Beavis like Gill, then that's another story. Why are people getting so hung up on this!?

Not a lot of people realize that Maximum looks the same both left and right if you stack the letters vertically and spell it from top to bottom, which is why Capcom decided to go with that design for Dee Jay in SSF2. :mmhmm:

And Beavis would look ridiculous in parachute pants that would have Maximum on them anyway. Just saying.

this is not directed at the none im sure he knows.

This character is genius. Every move has something special to it. :D
I've never really watched Beavis & Butthead, so I don't know much about the show, so I can only imagine the joy of the fans when playing with this character.

- f+LP+LK performs Ball Breaker, whiloe I think it should rather perform Dodge.
- Timing is a little strict for Merry Go Bye Bye, but I guess this was done on purpose to balance the move.

DL'd him and played with him last night.  His moves and attacks had me rolling.  He's an absolute blast and the references XD.

A small nitpick: I noticed that his Get Aggressive (I'm Cornholio) super had no super sound or super spark.  Was that intentional?

And a small question that everyone has on their mind: You going to do Butt-head as well?

And here's Cybaster nailing it again. I quickly playtested Beavis last night using my keyboard for like 5 minutes. He's fucking awesome and you certainly did a crazy awesome job None. Your characters always have this amusing and cerebral sense of humor that cracks me up every time. Beavis is a keeper for sure; Mugen needs content like this. I say he rivals Dee Bee Kaw as far as humor goes, but Kaw is more along the lines of insanity.

And being a B&B fan from back in the day, Cybaster is right, he is a joy.

Thanks again for sharing your talents. :lugoi2:

The vampire from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Beavis and Butthead just think they're meeting the rapper.

Open his CNS files and it says that not only does the Vanilla Ice intro work against the Waru version JoJo character, but other Vanilla Ices and Vice from KoF as well.  Also, try pitting him against short characters like Scott Pilgrim and Pocket Shin-Gouki.

Yes it is. And Vice as well. And Iced if you changed his name to that.

Know what Beavis needs? A stage! Maybe I can make one... with need of the screenshots of the show for references.

- f+LP+LK performs Ball Breaker, whiloe I think it should rather perform Dodge.

Can't believe I've managed to make that kind of mistake, oh well, nobody's perfect (also, I fixed that and reuploaded the archive but I didn't change anything aside of fixing that and giving a bigger list of female characters Beavis would trigger is intro for, so you don't really have to download him again).

A small nitpick: I noticed that his Get Aggressive (I'm Cornholio) super had no super sound or super spark.  Was that intentional?
Yes. And the Idea I wanted to realize but was not able to do so in time (this can come up by the time I'd update Beavis though, and alongside that yes you may expect Butt-head as well, I just need a rest before proceeding with the latter) was an idea bulb in the place of the super spark, and I may be overthinking things but how one would exactly get ideas by drinking coffee

And to anyone wondering about the lack of Metallica logo on his shirt in the sprites: it's for the same reason why Ky Kiske and Sol Badguy don't have respectively "HOPE" and "FREE" written on their belts in their sprites, such tiny text would be impossible to make it look right on a 480p sprite.

There already is. There's a stage that takes place in their house.

Amazing character.  The stance alone had me rolling.  XD  Absolutely love the spritework... you have really nailed Mike Judge's style.  So much nostalgia in those voice clips and animations.

Out of curiosity None, how long did the spritework take?
Title: Re: Beavis

Prob a month since Melvana said:
an idea that we thought would take like a year to come to fruition took maybe about a month.

He worked on it for like a little more than a month iirc, cause I remember him linking sprites in the skype right back in mid november

This char really came out great, good shit None.

Oh wow, can't believe I forgot to put in "p1facing = 1" and "p2facing = 1" parameters to that moves, hitdefs. Oh well, happens to everyone.

Also, I did the very first sprite of Beavis (which looks pretty much the same as the released character's idle stance, aside of the anti-aliased pupil (http://justnopoint.com/lbends/junk/hehhehyousaymugen.png)) back in january this year, both as a graphics practice and to see if I can make at least decent looking cartoon characters by tracing them in vectors (remember that Johnny Bravo from one of Kazu's winposes? That was almost all vectors too). Then in around late october I vector traced other possible head angles, and full work on the spriteset didn't start until - indeed - early November. Mind you, raster graphics editing is still involved for finalizing the the look of the sprites (among things,  I omitted vectoring the upper torso as I opted to draw that later after rendering the vectors into bitmaps (http://justnopoint.com/lbends/junk/couldbehighercouldbehigher.png)), nonetheless vectors - at least for simple artstyles with no shading - have proved to be effective time-savers, especially with animation.

Amazing work in all aspects from sprite work, to the funny intros, moves and audio etc.  Thanks very much for your hard work that you put into this character.  My old Beavis is gone and this one takes his place.  I hope you also make Butthead at some point!
