Title: The worst fighting game to ever exist...
Post by: Professor Voodoo on November 27, 2021, 05:00:21 pm
So I read multiple "worst fighting games" threads on this very forum that date back about a decade. Multiple people voted for multiple games. Quite a lot are shit. However, there was ONE glaring omission, which is somewhat understandable, given its extreme obscurity (I wouldn't have known about it if not for the Gamer's Edition of Guinness World Records.) One omission that, imo, stands above the rest.

The game in question? Barravento: O Mestre Da Capoeira.

This. Game. Is. (to quote the Nerd) ASS.

Can anyone top this?

Also for (likely) second place....(I don't think this one was mentioned either....)

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

That Barravento game looks like it was done by one person... who was very Brazilian from the sounds of it. Also, being on the Amiga probably limited a lot of things there.

Catfight, on the other hand.. WOOF. That is bad.

And according to a poster it's the first fighting game to be developed in Brazil. It seems to be a commercial release as well but there's barely any info to confirm that.

Am I allowed to list competitors? I haven't played this one but...:

Ported from the Korean arcade fighter 'Masters Fury' which definitely has that bootleg tone with copies of characters (Like Mr. Death clearly being FF2 Kim and Kain/Kill Ruki being AOF2 Geese).
This PS1 port (which is an official commercial release btw) takes it to another level of bad with hilariously compressed in-game sprites and some real cheap presentation!

People like to blame things like Shaq Fu but the old Shaq it's an OK game compared to...

Human Killing Machine

In short a Street Fighter (1) clone with controls even worse.

Dishonorable mention Cheonha Mujeok

Basic things like to walk or to jump are a pipe in the @ss here. At least have some good sprites.

I still maintain that it's the Genesis/Mega Drive version of TMNT Tournament Fighters.  Why?  Relativity.

That Capoeira game looks awful to play, but it's on the Amiga, the graphics aren't horrible, and it was probably made from scratch by a single person.  TMNTTF was an actual commercial game made for a mainstream game console in late 1993.  It would be perfectly reasonable to compare the Genesis version to the NES and SNES versions.  It would be perfectly reasonable to expect that the Genesis version would be as good as the other two versions.  The NES version was great and I played the hell out of it.  The SNES version is an incredible game and deserves to be so fondly remembered.  So how about that Genesis version?!  Hot garbage with no redeeming qualities.  Ugly graphics.  Bad gameplay.  Doesn't use the 6-button controller because reasons.  Small roster of ugly and unlikable characters.  If you straight ported the NES game to the Genesis, you would literally have a better game.

At least it has that.

Besides the horrible pre-rendered faceless graphics the gameplay is just so bad. Even Fight Fever was playable.

The only thing good was the soundtrack, character select screen and certain stages.

Some admirable choices. I'll throw in another dishonorable mention that slipped thru the cracks. Kabuki Warriors for the OG XBOX.

To quote Andy McNamara,  "I literally won a match just bashing the controller against my ass. I wish I was joking, but the score is seriously Kabuki Warriors zero, my ass one."

And those sounds. EE-YO!

Nah, those versions are good, or regular if you compare with the fighting games in their consoles...
Now, the NES version of TF, that's the real meaning of unplayable, I can assure you

And don't forget Rise of the Robots, a game so bad that not even characters were converted to MUGEN, only stages... and that says a lot of that game (and its sequel)

I think I played almost any fighting game released (or not)
And some fan games, doujin games unreleased ones etc.
Tons and tons of bad games exist. perhaps 30% of what I played...

I'm ok with all your choices.

Let me add one I particularly felt horrible.

I usually try my best to complete a fighting  game.
Even if it's ugly, have horrible sound / music or horrible gameplay.

But this one is an absolute masterpiece.
It can take you 20-30 minutes or more to beat a simple CPU opponent.
Really limited moves, stupid animations, unfair AI.

I tried my best to beat 3 characters by using some cheap moves then I gave up...

Some gameplay of this crappy game KILLING ZONE on ps1

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Pit Fighter (the SNES version) yet. I remember trying to play this as a kid, and giving up in less than 3 minutes bc it was unplayable. lol

There is a whole YT series on bad fighting games done by this guy. He is very reasonable in his critique-coms.

Totally agreed.
War of Succession is an example of how not to do a game in general.

But here's another mess, Expect No Mercy

Oh man, this one is damn terrible and unplayable too. xD

I'm surprised no one talked about Rise of the Robots, we'll focus on the SNES version for now. I'm pretty sure it looked good during the 90's but nowadays...I dunno man.

I find it funny that most of the games mentioned here uses digitized graphics/sprites.

I'd also like to classify the Mega Drive port of World Heroes a honourable mention.

I may looks accurate in stills, but it's a true mess when you play. Specials barely come out, going from stand to crouch and vice versa is a hassle (Sometimes you go into crouch at random), Cheap AI, and so on,

Shall I introduce you to Killing Zone? It's like Battle Monsters but in 3D...and also...not very good. Then again, what do you expect from PS1 fighting games not named Tekken or Virtua Fighter? (I'm not saying both Tekken 1 and Virtua Fighter 1 are bad, don't get me wrong)
