Title: Re: Likiji123's Sprites

He's looking better now. Now the thing that bothers me the most is that his eyes are incredibly overshaded. The way you shaded it makes it look like he has eyes made out of glass or plastic, because they don't really look like normal eyes, it almost feels as if Sonic is a robot in there. I would suggest to leave his eye mostly white, and just add a bit of anti aliasing for the shading. You might also want to give him a little smile, since Sonic is one character to nearly always have that.
I also noticed his body seems to be very bright, in a way it seems to lack shading. Not to mention his middle spine on the head seems to have a weird lack of depth, as the it feels quite flat, so I recommend shading the middle and top spines a bit more. The placement for the brightest blue shade in the head also makes his head look oddly bright, in a plastic looking way, so I personally think it would be better without it. What also bothers me is the shape of his shoe, because it just... suddenly curves up out of nowhere. That and the white/gray shading for the sprite seem to be lacking a bit of contrast, and same goes for the red colors.

Somewhat fixed. His eye still feels pillow shaded, and there still seems to be a lack of depth on the two top spines. I also see that the outlining on the top left of his head is oddly thick, which is pretty much a problem, and the same goes to other parts of the sprite. It's as if part of the sprite was dragged or something.
If you want, feel free to use this Sonic animation I made last year as reference for some of the shading (since you seem to have gotten the shape of the sprite pretty nicely already):

Try to work with flats + outlines, then shade from there. Keep the shading as simple as possible. For how I see it you rescaled a render and coloured on top of it.

Copied or not, the sprite in the picture itself isn't much of good to begin with. It's simply just a fanmade sprite that has part of the same problems as I said before.
Still, you should follow Alex's advice, if you want to get better at it.

Funny thing about this is that I was dumb enough in the past to actually believe this when I saw that image about a year probably before PXZ came out (don't remember when I saw this image, so I'm throwing guesses).
For advice on spriting, take a look at these tutorials (since you said that "you're fairly new at shading", I thought these might help; not sure if you looked at them, though): http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/a-basic-sprite-tutorial/ (http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/a-basic-sprite-tutorial/) http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/line-weight-thickness-in-sprites/ (http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/line-weight-thickness-in-sprites/)
Also, if you're aiming for a PXZ styled sprite, I suggest looking at PXZ sprites on the Spriters Resource or the sprites of its predecessor, Namco x Capcom (like what Ramza said). Look at the dA galleries of other pixel artists and see their attempts. This is kinda how I learned to shade sprites.
Good luck, and I hope I've been helpful.

It's RamzaNeko, not razama.
Also it's obvious you took RamzaNeko sprite and edited it a little bit, just compare them! Copy and paste one on top of the other: they're the same except for some pixels and the tufts! What did you "copy"? The face (eyes+mouth+nose), the body, the hands, the ears, you moved the tufts and the right eye (our left) and just for the sake of it you changed the shading a bit, you outlined the right leg (our left) with a darker colour (you forgot one pixel!)... and you continue to tell me you just "took some assets"?

Make another sprite, let's see if you really improved. Being angry doesn't help anyone. Also, if we have to say the truth it's been 4 months since you started (exactly when you registered). Now I'm not saying that to tell you that you didn't improve. Just don't say it was only "a couple of weeks ago" when you know it's not right.

The poses and perspective of the 3D models don't really scale down that well at this size and you're way over the GBC sprite color limit. The shapes of it's ears and tail are kind of jagged too. it's face is a bit indistinct too i guess you'd have to rework the proportions to match the GSC look.

The MMZ GBC sprites are really neat. Digging the rest of the sprites in here as well.
The Little Mac is pretty decent, although he doesn't seems to have much of a depth within his shading. Mostly his upper body seems pretty flat in terms of shading, and the brightening in the sprite is almost impossible to notice in there, so you might want to give the shading some more contrast as well.

Yes, those sprites are also very big for the Game Boy Color. Fits within the tile limit I guess but some strange scale going on for what should be small Pokemon next to much bigger ones.
GSC sprites emphasise solid form and very good drawing before anything else, they use black dithering extremely rarely because it makes the shape harder to read, sometimes white highlights with a small amount of dithering, and occasionally two complementary colors can be used as shading if the Pokemon has a primarily single-color design.

That's a fine take, although I do heavily endorse that you make the singposts taller, as they appear to be really short as of now... especially in comparison to the original sprites:
And also, you don't have to necessarily reference the shading from the SRB2 starpost, given that the shading on it is actually rather badly done, and we at the dev team are most likely going to replace the starpost sprites.

I'd say the face on Electivire is a bit off, but then again... (http://s19.postimage.org/egqu8svlr/Spr_4p_459_m.png)
It's a fairly easy fix though. Rearrange the pixels a bit ;)

Looks nice.
Just use mid tones for abs, light shades shouldn't be used in abundance. Look at these guys for example:
That's impressive dude, your spriting has majorly improved
Thank you so much :D
I definetly do plan on doing more tekken stuff, and i was thinking about making a full sheet of cvs jin in the tekken 4 outfit as seen above mainly because im annoyed by everyone who makes jin uses SFxT as a base, and also because jin is my favourite fighting game character

Title: Re: Likiji123's Sprites
Post by: hatter on January 22, 2016, 06:13:47 pm
Walrus has a point. The face he put down is much more accurate, and the ab edits are actually more akin to natural than yours, which are too square-ish.
Since Jin's head is covered by his long hair, it would make sense to cover most of his face in the mid tone color, as walruslui did, because light still hits the head, but the hair of Jin prevents it from completely covering his face in light, and as you can see in walrus' edit, a small light tone can be seen.
Also, abs and muscles in general are never square.
Anatomy is annoying, believe me I know. But just try to go for something acceptable in terms of normality. You don't have to do a DaVinci and create a perfect replica of the human body. Remember that certain features can be exaggerated and some just need to be akin to how they would look in real life in terms of size, proportions, and look, and that this would also vary and change depending on the style you are going for. Since CvS mixes the normality of KoF's body proportion sizes, and MvC/SFZ's muscular exaggeration, you should try to go for a midway between both.
Try applying what walrus put for the abs and face to your revised edit, with enough practice you'll definitely get it down.

It's a good attempt, but your approaching the style in the wrong way, if you don't mind me saying. You need to look closely at existing sprites to emulate the style. You'll notice it follows a very specific set of rules, which your sprites seem to ignore. Now, I'm no expert, but if you asked me, here's what I think are some of the basic rules of the style.
Head, hands and feet are the focus. Should reflect the characters personality brightly and clearly. Because the face is such a huge focus, make sure they remain visible and not covered by other parts of the body when in neutral stance. Small changes in posing are okay in these cases as long as the stance is similar and follows the same flow (see Kyo, Iori, Shingo)
Rest of the body should be simpler. Stick shaped limbs for agile characters and simple anatomy for muscular ones.
Add details to clothing but try making sure the sprite's not too busy. Patterns in clothing (stripes, polka dots) should be avoided except when absolutely required for the character to retain its original feel
In most cases, NGPC faces are identical. There are a few repeated sets, but they're typically only unique when none of the existing ones would work for the character. Examples:
SET 1 (anime eye): ****PENDING****
SET 2 (serious anime eye): ****PENDING****
SET 3 (angry eye): ****PENDING****
SET4 (other): ****PENDING****
I recommend you try to follow these patterns more closely in order to make your sprite look more legit. I've gotta hand it to you, you pick some really interesting characters to convert to NGPC style! Shame you can't have 4 colors for Gill...

That's a HUGE improvement! :swoon:
There are still a few things that can be addressed with the pose/animation, but as far as the style goes, you're much closer.
I'm thinking for a workaround for the lack of blue... maybe add black toning to his other half? It's not blue, but it's not white either. And it'll help it stand out from the white of the hair/loincloth.
P.S.: All the gif files I hotlinked in my previous post were normal size at first. Not sure how they got huge all of a sudden. I'll fix it, but give me a bit of time, lol.

Wikia's Vignette server is against external hotlinking. Their old image server didn't do this, however.

You could probably do an Urien sprite now that you've done Gill... and that would leave a slot open for someone else to make a request, since it's a simple enough edit.

you JUST learned how to do an accurate sprite, howcome you just did the mistake of the head and hands being too small again? this is another problem you have when doing multiple sprites in the same style sometimes, you end up makin em inconsistent (a great example is with Android 17, your latest anim has his ass STILL really fat for some reason in one frame then it gets too skinny the next frame)
though aside from that gallon looks fine in the other aspects :)

You had to animate all the hair for Gill. I made my edits: (I also made two faces, perhaps one of them could be useful for you for making Urien)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that style have way different proportions? If I recall the heads, hands and even feet were pretty big for balancing and gameplay purposes. I'd like to see that style of proportion more incorporated in your NGPC style sprites. You've been getting better at it if you look at Gill, but I think it's something you should keep paying attention too.

Talbain feedback
To be fair, he's picking really hard characters with no existing base to turn into NGPC sprites.
Right now, I think its shortcomings have to do with the adaptation being too faithful (yes. the hands and head are bigger, but it lacks some of the cutesy/cartoonishness associated with the style. Basically, it's a great pocket sprite, but I wouldn't immediately think NGPC when looking at it. It's still something I would've loved to see if they ever made, let's say, a Darkstalkers game on the GBC, for example.
I honestly don't know how to explain what doesn't make it NGPC-ish.
Likiji123: would you mind if I gave Talbain a shot? I want to experiment with a few approaches and see if they work.

Hmmmm, the way you said that makes me feel like making a custom GBC darkstalkers style and adapt it to all the characters (and maybe other characters, who knows)
also yea! you can give Talbain a shot. i always love seeing other peoples interpretation of something :D
Title: Re: Likiji123's Sprites

Talbain's feet don't need to be that detailed. The only detail you can see is usually just the big toe. Also, here: http://mugenguild.com/forum/msg.892331 there's a Talbain sprite. You can take notes from that.
About Urien, actually I would use the other face I made. Then again, the faces I made are not really in NGPC style, so...

The SS64 stocks were incredibly simple; some of those are far too detailed. Compare Fox's icon, which has no eyes at all, and your one for Wolf, which has detailed eyes.

Hands are really tiny in all of your latest sprites. Make them bigger (it's fine if they cover up the body) Also, his legs are too close together. Like he's standing up straight, a la M. Bison victory pose.
He's not overly muscular either, so I would also probably go with the standard pole-shaped arms.

yeah, I didn't do a good job (part of me was a bit in a rush).
The hand needs a bit of work when it changes, it looks like t enlarges a bit, it should retain the same look (sort of) as before it changes. On the plus side, glad you have something working, just do the wlarus' advice, and you're good as gold. :2thumbsup:

SSF2 is a good way to get your stuff out there and meet new people. I was a dev for about 6 years and it's a pretty fun experience. If you want me to set you up with some of the gear I used and tips feel free to hit me up.

I'm concerned as to why his limbs look thicker than usual, and why his head is so big. This does reminds me of the last time I wanted to remake Sonic's sprite design for SSF2, which was way before they even decided to take their current sprite design direction with the veteran characters. You know, back when Mario still used SMW-ish looking sprites, so yeah, hence the small size:
This became discontinued because I eventually lost complete interest in the game, but maybe you'll find some use for this, even if it's just for reference.

I'd say you are. However, once you resize it and index it (you can do it now if you wish, these are just some mistakes to watch out for):
-Shorten the eye a little bit, it looks like it's bulging. -The foot on the viewer's right should be edited to match the other side, because it looks bigger than the viewer's left. Shading on the left pad as well should be changed around to match the viewer's left leg pad. -Hat should be shortened horizontally. -The viewer's right arm needs to be fixed. The bicep is bigger than that of the viewer's left , and there's a weird line on the arm (was that in the CvS2 version of Bison??) -Also don't forget to add the highlights, they are important to the style.
Since nobody answered you about how CPS3 coloring/shading works, I'll briefly tell you what I've read from others:
-Rolento/ManyNinjas: The lit areas and shadowed areas tend to use roughly the same amount of colors, being somewhere between 5-7 shades from my last check. There aren't too many hard lines present, even around the edges. In the examples I've seen, the shadowed areas tend to use cooler colors than the lit portions of a sprite, with Ibuki's skin taking on purple tones in this case. (Source; under CPS3 Shading (http://irwt.iammanyninjas.com/sprite.html))
The explanation behind this second set of colors is probably connected to natural light reflection; unless the case is extreme, even areas not in direct sunlight receive remain partially illuminated due to their surroundings and light's tendency to bounce. Sadly, the only suggestion I can give in terms of deciding on color shades to use when making your own sprites is to look at the commercial examples to get a better gist of what you should be looking for.
-Diepod/HIIVolt-07/BluperVillain: SF3 lighting is much the same, as far as the overhead light source. Still, it follows Capcom's rule of closer limbs being brighter than farther ones. That, and the second set of cool colors. (Source (http://orig06.deviantart.net/f017/f/2011/310/1/6/how_to_light_character_sprites_by_hiivolt_07-d4fbe8l.png))
-!E/Sinhra: Self-explanatory image, at the top beginning part (http://pre14.deviantart.net/0584/th/pre/f/2013/200/c/d/sf3_easy_pal_by_sinhra-d6e928y.png)
G'luck.
EDIT: Forgot to add the proprotions, are like a more detailed/exaggerated version of CPS2 (or at least that's how I describe it). Hands/feet are pretty big in the style, muscles are exaggerated out of normal proportions (e.g. Alex's back/shoulders, the biceps of the Ansatsuken fighters in that game, Leo's chest, just to name a few).
Pretty much really exaggerated, and more detailed than CPS2. Try to put down the proportions and when you do that compare them to official CPS3 sprites and see what adjustments you can do to make them akin to the official ones. That's what I did with Seijuro Hiko and Jimbo Rizer, it should work out well for you.

The Color blend mode should be the designated blend mode if you want to achieve that. To do that, make a new layer on top of your sprite layer, and change it's mode from Normal to Color. From there, just color on that layer on top of your sprite, and voila, the colors change.
However, the right effect won't always be achieved, so once you are fine with how everything looks, merge them, and use the Fill Tool to give them the right colors.
EDIT: I should mention that the pencil is a better tool to use for this job. Well, that's what I do at least.

It 's like that shade of brown not fit with the green and the carapace seems that is not part of the sprite, the rest I loved!

Thanks! As for the colours, all of them were chosen from SF3 palettes and sprites (for example the green is from alex) but i might see what other browns look like to give it a much better feel and im not sure what carapace is, is it the front shell colour or the side shell?

From what I remember, the old sprites used to make the Pokémon look chibi by emphasising certain parts of the sprites (usually heads, hands and feet); Garchomp looks like someone who could do with a better pose that doesn't make him look so helplessly tiny.

also since no one responded to a question i had earlier....
would anyone be interested in seeing sprite streams from me? and if so how would i do it/set it up?
The first step would be to make an account on Picarto or Piczel (I use the latter now). Second step would be downloading streaming software, like Open Broadcast Software, XCast, and the like. I use OBS for streaming, couldn't get XCast to work for some reason.
I can't talk anymore about it atm due to lack of time, but tomorrow, if you do those two steps, and have any questions, I'll write walls of text, explaining what needs to be done, and we can do a test stream together to see if everything checks out.
P.S Not sure if I said anything about your CPS3 Donatello sprite, but I love it. :D

You might want to base it on a Sonic sprite instead of Amy, because Knuckles kept the cute face that I made for Amy, and if you were to put him next to Sonic, Knuckles would look smaller than he should.
Other than that, it's a decent sprite, he just needs a fix in the pillow shaded hands, bigger gloves and shoes, a bigger face. If you need a size reference or a better base, there's an old S1 styled sprite of Knuckles I did that you can use:

Nice work. But you did just a half of it. I think, it's better to add SFA styled aura and alighty change hair's ongoing. C'mon, it's electricity, hairdo must change. Here is references. (http://i.imgur.com/8dI45uQ.png) (http://i.imgur.com/KmkvEdb.png)(http://i.imgur.com/YtnICNF.gif)

Personally, I think before messing with the hair, the sprite itself needs touched up for the shock. That way, he has that part down, then can mess with that later. But that's my opinion heh. The yellow aura would be nice aye, though can always make it a secondary option (for instance, have this be like the SFIII styled shock, and then do the yellow aura for the first two sprites and there's your SFA/SFII shock~
EDIT - By the by, really love that Terra sprite. That looks amazing! o.o Can't wait to see how you do Aqua, though if you do her, will you be doing her in her armored form, or regular form? o.o?
Sora looks like he's really grumpy about something. Why the long face, Sora? Did someone steal your Riku again? : V But yeah, I think it's the way the face is shaped that's giving the problem?? Or maybe the mouth lines have to be shorter?? Hm...

Thanks! :D, i wasnt actually planning on doing aqua anytime soon but now that you mention it, i might do it now. I'd probably do the armor form as i really like how they look
Heh, maybe one day ill be able to do good faces (maybe thats why i like spriting the keyblade armor more :sweatdrop: ) (http://i.imgur.com/wglRxbH.png) had another shot at it though, hopefully its better looking

Sora sprite looks a bit messy. If you want to make it look better, try to keep your lines cleaner Likiji. Good outlines are a halfway to success. Also, learn how to work with references. Find sprites with similar elements of clothing, similar pose etc. and try to mimic what you see. Keep up your work, you're getting better but there is still place to improve.

but this also extends to the shading. I ended up doing this:
My rendition's on the right. See how the shading/outlines are a bit cleaner? In addition, see how the midtone is being used? It's actually the shadow color on parts closer to the screen/viewer's sight. The shadow colors and darkest tone are being used as outlines instead. For limbs farther, the midtone becomes the light shade, while the other two function as one would expect them to.
You did a good job nonetheless, and I encourage you to practice this style. Not a lot do, and once you get an idea of how things work, it becomes all too easy.
And remember, clean shading/outlines = professional looking sprite. :)

"10) Movies can include Cartoon Movies, Anime Movies, Real Life Movies, 3D Movies, etc... (a TV series is not a movie)" I think the rules state it's gotta be from a movie. Sprite work looks pretty dope so far though.

Technically, there IS a Sonic game for the NGPC, but I get what you're going for. The sprite is a bit squished horizontally, but it looks nice.

If anything, I suggest you go for making your own personal art styles when you actually get around to mastering other styles without issue. As in, maybe you should expand your art knowledge further, before just trying to make your own thing like that.

I can see the differences in the color and details for sure. Much more like CPS2 style than before, which while the original wasn't BAD, it was...very washed out and detailed for CPS2 style I think? Looks good though!

they're both in the CPS2 Style Hench why i updated it as the new one didn't match CPS2 at all other than the proportions also the old one just has very rough shading and just looks messy overall
