Title: Mugen is now 20 years old
Post by: Amidweiz on July 17, 2019, 08:00:34 am
According to Wikipedia anyways, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N) mugen is officially twenty years old now. (as of where I am anyways) I was going to do something more special for this occasion but I guess a post here will do. I'm sure there was betas of mugen before July 17 but I wouldn't know about that unfortunately being not to much older than this engine's conception. Can't really say anything else than happy 20th birthday mugen.

20 years? That's definitely a milestone and more importantly, amazing that it's still around after so long.
Started this journey in MUGEN almost a decade ago, and I'm hoping the ride doesn't end yet. To the future of MUGEN!

yea, looking at the wayback machine for the site It does seem that way. (https://web.archive.org/web/19991221185927/http://www.elecbyte.com/games/mugen/index.html) Probably a typo upon whomever made the Wikipedia article and I didn't really double check, oh well I consider it close enough to it's actual birthday to not matter to much.

Man... It's been a long time... Mugen has been here 20 years.... It sounds about right because I've been on mugen for 16 years. I first found about it in 2003 and I was hooked on DBZ Mugen Edition 2!!!! Then I researched so much info about it as far as editing characters gathering screenpacks etc. The first I seen a playable dbz charater that can transform, I damn near lost my marbles! I was a young'n back then. Plus that was definitely back then. So shout out to the guy who made those characters wayyyyyy b4 their time!!! They are the reason I chose to make Vegeta transform. They I got into Pots mugen character and make an entire game with his chars and similar styled chars. (Vyn CrazyKoopa, etc) I used to have tournaments at my house lol b4 the online ikemen came about lol. But enough of memory lane cuz I have a lot of memories. and I could go all day!!! Man Happy Birthday Mugen you've been apart of my life more than a decade!

Happy (late) Birthday M.U.G.E.N
I can't believe that time flies this quickly. Has it really been this long? Felt a bit shorter than that.
Then again, I guess time really does fly by when you get older. It has been at least twelve years ever since I discovered MUGEN and I can still remember the circumstances which I found it and why.
Really tells you how impactful MUGEN has been on my life.

Gonna redo my M.U.G.E.N. birthday notice, now.
I am very glad M.U.G.E.N. is actually 20 now. I first heard of it in mid-2010, (though I wasn't in the community) when I was five, coming across random videos of Spongebob/Peter/Homer (etc.) fights, and then I was interested. Kinda sad those characters aren't great by today's standards due to their buggy nature, or that better versions exist.

These characters were already bad and buggy at the time they were originally released. It's just that the majority of the people have no idea on quality standards and they only focus on the graphics.

1.2 was never going to be a thing. 1.1 was a feature update to 1.0 and 2.0 would've been the next version with some very exciting changes/additions planned.

Happy 20th Birthday Mugen
I first encounter Mugen in year 2001 at a PC centre in my local where I saw screenshots of Gouki vs. Shingo Yabuki in kof99's Raining park stage, Sagat vs. Joe Higashi in kof96's Iori stage and so on which those screenshots can be found on NeoGouki's website and I thought it was another sequel of Capcom vs. SNK series :P The PC centre was for leisure and doing internet research for people who don't have internet access. My friend introduced this PC Centre for me to do internet research for school works and gaming leisure. I found out Mugen where the PC Centre had this Mugen game and I play the hell out of it for my entire days until the PC centre was closed down somewhere in mid year of 2002 :mlol: My best favorite and first character that I used was Gouki by VK :gouki: He was top tier in that roster, but Orochi by VK was god tier :P Now it has been 18 years since I know about Mugen but for now, I don't really have time for Mugen as real life has been very busy for me. I do check some Mugen release and trying out some newly released characters (mostly my favorite characters such as Shin Gouki by GK, Gouki by deathscythe and so on) from time to time.

Happy Birthday M.U.G.E.N.
I got in here by mere curiosity... when i was 11 years old my brother showed me a video about Everything vs Everything, i told me about it, winmugen was my first entry, i downloaded a compilation using the Mugen Fighting Jam Screenpack, but a normal version, not 999 chars version, more like a normal select.def, and it had all i needed, Reu's chars, Goku and Vegeta, plenty of new cool things for me, 2008 and 2009 were my years bae... and they weren't at the same time, since i lost my mom on that period.
That's the most resumed version i could type.
Whatever... 10 years later, having it as a growing hobbie, i am still here and i truly like it, as always... the AVPboy sends his salute to the hole community, even if some of you may not like me.

Well to be perfectly frank, my first introductions with Mugen weren't that great. Due to Youtube's wack recommendations, several years back my viewing experiences of fighting games eventually led me to Minotaur and Kuromaru mugen videos (great content I know).
A couple years later and I decided to look into mugen seriously by looking into HDBZ and I believe a semi-random Marvel vs Capcom compilation. Then like 2-4ish years later I found out Mugen Fighter's Guild was a thing and got myself involved minimally. That leaves me to now in which I've made an account here and have done slightly more in mugen then I did several years ago. Really though I like what I've seen and am happy to see how the engine has grown.

Happy B. Day MUGEN. I will try to write short story as I can.I remember parents take to the place with pc and internet, and later me, we can went alone. Me and my best friend were browing near the end of the world and y2k menace lookin for SF and KOF artworks, sprites and gamesages kof 98 movelist,we liked create CAWS in games as Deadly Arts or Smackdown 2 and others. then found a picture Krizalid and Krauser vs Goenitz and Kyo ,that reads MUGEN,we think was a photoshop image or something. No, was a game, then downloaded it from elecbyte page,it got only the Kung Fu man and his stage,we read how add it,lookin for more, founding now died sites as leechgames.com -it had many Samurai Shodown characters and some KOF 98 as Chris or Ralf-,Mugen FR,Mugen Enciclopedia,The Pit Mugen. Many stages was found too. That bunch of stuff was burned in a CD playing around the time.2002 I got my first Pc a P4 then we can play at house,I told one day maybe I would make stuff for mugen, around 2005 I did some stages but never released officially, only shared around forum people or email. I was busy studying and learning more,of course playing games, later around 2011 I started with my first mugen character ripping from a mobile game. The sad part is she never saw her Mugen character done, even she did some stuff as recording some voices and sounds which I used in her mugenization. I seen many sites and forums dying around time,I hope this one keeps alive for a long time.

Long ass story : Just my story on how I got into mugen and what it did for me
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
I first got into mugen in the early 2000 when my big brother download an mvc compilation. While it was probably really bad it really blew my mind and me and my big brother would dowload character any times we could. Since we had limited internet we would download the old winmugen and like 7 or 8 differents characters. It was mostly marvel and capcom characters since they were super easy to get. I mostly remember Ken and Gang, captain commando, venom, evil ryu, sakura etc. I actually found out about street fighter and fighting games via mugen I legit barely knew anything about the genre. After that when my older brother lost interest and when we got our own computer, me and my little brothers got the msh screenpack and we would download litteraly anything from capcom to snk to simpsons characters to chibi naruto and digimon characters. It was pretty crazy but definitely super fun especially doing team arcade mode with the both of them. We also started downloading compilation like KOF vs MK or a big Street Fighter compilation with mostly pots characters. I remember download a ton of warusaki cvs2 characters via esnip. At the time I also became a big fan of GNCMario SF alpha character like bison, vega and balrog and at the time since it was one of the few mugen website not banned at my high school they were the easiest character to get. After that I got my own laptop and with that I finally could ran mugen 1.0 and thats the same time I really got into mugen forum like CVG United and the guild. I mostly played with infinite early creation and a lot of the mvc eoh character. Then I got really into the pots/cvs gamestyle and I would pretty much only download characters following this gameplay. I got bored of it and after watching a bunch of Melvana mugen video I really wanted to try differents stuff. I really got into KOF thanks to mugen with Vans, Koopakoot and Jin characters and I also became a big fan of guilty gear thanks to mugen. After that I was all about the Z2 characters I still remember the vanilla vegeta that came out a bunch of years ago. Then in like 2015 I kind of got bored of only playing and wanted to do more so since Im way to lazy to code and I wasnt really good at spriting characters I went into something that I felt like wasnt really talked about, lifebars. I came up with a bunch of lifebars concept base on games like Jojo ASB or snes games like castlevania. I also start doing a lot of spriting for the lifebars and with the times its something I think I really got better at. Then in 2016 I really got into SFV and at the same times into the capcom pro tour. Sadly my interest for mugen also pretty much died down. Nowadays I still do a bit of lifebars spriting from time to time and I still download and mess out with certain characters but I sadly dont find much fun in playing anymore especially with the rise of fighting games that keep coming out. In the end while my interest for it as move on it will always have a special place. Thanks to mugen I found out my biggest passion ever : Fighting games and thanks to that I found out something that I would have never gotten into : Competitive fighting games. Im pretty much super invested into the capcom pro tour nowadays and Im legit one of the most well knowed stream monster now which is pretty funny to me. I also do a lot of fact and history stuff for the capcom pro tour. That was a long ass post probably the longest Ive ever written and its crazy how its only the stuff I can remember. Honestly its still fasinating how Ive progress I went from an idiot who begged people to join my project that never really existed like Cvs the artist, to a pixel artist who made decent lifebars to someone who is pretty much all in the fighting games community.
In conclusion : Thank you mugen and happy birthday!!!

Here we go again with your S.o.S... No one is hated for a taste in something. Many people like different things but they have a common sense, you don't need to tell everyone "i like hentai" and expect that people just accept it. Yet you've been warned about this and instead of keeping your so loved taste to yourself you're spreading it out again, asking to be banned one more time.

My story on how I got into MUGEN:
Spoiler: Long story with videos.(click to see content)
Back in 2007, when I was 8 years old, I was a big fan of Billy & Mandy, that I was watching videos of that Billy & Mandy game for PS2 and GameCube (y'know, the one about battles), and then on the related vids I saw this which was my very first MUGEN vid I watched:
I was wondering what game was that as I wasn't paying much attention to the title, then, again on the related vids, I watched this (its a reupload so its not the original from 2007):
I was SO surprised and jolly, that I was calling my bro yelling, ''Hey! Come here look at this! It has Vegeta, and Homer, and it has Super Mario and SpongeBob!!'', because since I was a kid I loved crossovers, even I used to play MvC2 on PS2 a lot. After that, I went addictive to watching MUGEN videos, everyday, I even thought it was the best thing I've seen. Too much nostalgic memories, with fighting game characters, cartoon characters, video game characters, even many that I didn't know about so I met most fighting games because of MUGEN... Years later, I wanted to become a MUGEN author, I started out in 2013, tho my stuff was bad, but I slowly improved over the years, but still don't consider my newer stuff to be great, looking back at them, except for EqG Applejack who I consider my better creation, but that still doesn't stop me from enjoying MUGEN nowadays :)

I started with MUGEN wayyyy back in 2000-2001 when I downloaded some DBZ character compilation. Then I realized that the engine could be used to create your own characters and stages. I joined the now defunct Mugen DEV forum and went from there.
Some names that stuck out in my mind from back then:
Cadicle (Helped me with my first character)
XGargoyle
Samanosuke of the Saito Clan
ShinRyoga
Kazmer13
N64Mario
Kung Fu Man
Richard Lockard (inspired me to start with digitized characters)

It's somewhat staggering to think that I spent most of MUGEN's lifetime as a lurker who merely observed the game engine through YouTube videos and MUGEN forums as far back as 2006. I didn't even get into MUGEN until January of last year where I finally convinced myself that maybe the engine is worth getting into and it turned out that was the perfect time to get into it given there was so much excess hostility back in the day that I was literally too afraid to get into MUGEN lest I get ostracized on the spot simply for personal decisions. That's basically me watching MUGEN grow for nearly a whopping 12 years.
With that said, being so long ago, it's somewhat hard to pinpoint exactly what influenced me to get into MUGEN, although I can say one of the biggest factors was me being a frequent viewer of MugenWatcher's videos as well as being close friends with people who are already into the engine even before getting into the engine myself such as Alchemist of Atlas, Thentavius and the aforementioned Mugenwatcher.
I think the other reason why it took me so long to actually get into MUGEN is that I'm generally a shy person, so, it takes a while for me to open up.
Anyway, MUGEN's 20 years have sure been a wild ride and I hope it keeps on delivering.

I thought that's just Balthazar!
Oh, uhhhh, I found MUGEN Fighters Guild and MUGEN back in 2001 before it had a forum and just had the shoutbox. I was yahooing Darkstalkers stuff. My first introduction into it was telling everyone I wanted to make a DS vs SF game and getting told to never ever use anything anyone else made to do so.
18 years later, never made a single DS char but at least I helped others make MANY!
Somehow got roped into making dragon ball stuff while not being a huge fan of DB itself :P
But hey, it's pretty fun making their direction and such.

Considering that everyone else is posting their experience with mugen, I might as well tell mine since I started this thread.
From what I can remember my first experience with mugen, I wasn't seeking out for the engine specificly but rather seeking out a question to entertain myself with on YouTube back in around 2007, 2008, maybe 2009.
"Homer Simpson Vs Peter Griffin"
As mundane as that question is, it was the gateway drug that led me to being in this community albeit rather slowly. I have only the vaguest recollection upon what street fighter or any fighting game for that manner was so seeing warner's homer and peter dukeing it out in the fighting game format amazed my younger self. I'm not sure what video specifically I watched back then but I can safely assume it was this one.
After this I was curious upon what this mugen thing was so I looked at the suggestions for other videos upon mugen. Around 2009, 2010 is when I found some of Arpa's old videos which he did remove for pretty obvious reasons, unfortunate there isn't much examples left on the web showcasing this other than one. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p49TmSW-Og) (AshramVIII's mugen channel seems to be deleted or the second part of the brothers of destruction video would be here too)
This after awhile led to me finding the Broken ass mugen tournament channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTkR3aUpk1l8BDbJ7PIGkMg) around 2011, which then led to me making an account on the forum, making my version upon said tournament (which I disown) and the rest is history.

Whoa, all telling their stories about how you started on this and I just put a simple happy birthday!! Shame on me :embarrassed:
I meet MUGEN for first time in 2000 thanks to Spanish gaming magazines that I read on high school (one of the fads of the time) and in one of them a guy called Clarens (the "Rugal guy" for the creators of that time) had a section in one of them showing what MUGEN is. And I got fascinated since then, it was like "creating/ensembling a videogame by myself". When the internet came here by 2002, I got more info about this and downloaded it and started on it, and I liked it. But then I wonder... why so many SF and KOF chars? Where are the classic ones, like from Power Instinct, World Heroes and such? Instead of waiting eternally, what if I make them by myself?
So I discovered creators who made classic and obscure chars like Lord Sinistro, Adamskie and O Ilusionista, they were my inspiration then. So I learned how to code thanks to Juan Carlos' (and few time later Inverse's) MUGEN tutorials, the few ones translated to Spanish then, and I jumped into the pool with Reiji Oyama from the first Power Instinct in 2003, my first finished character (I got plenty of WIPs then but that was the first done). The rest is history... Oh, and I also I became a spriter, CVS Gai Tendou and Eric saw the light few years later, even when they were WIPs from the same time than Reiji, I usually focused more in coding than spriting, but I make it from time in time (Scott Pilgrim says hello :P)
And that's how I started on MUGEN basically. I hope you liked my story ;P
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
A notable detail is my other major hobby started the same year: cosplay. And like that, I say "I'll stop to do this when I got bored of it"... and like cosplay, it's 2019 and MUGEN still doesn't bore me :P

For me, it was a random mpeg file in 2002 on a fighting game combo compilation video i downloaded off an old website called akumacombos.com.
Somewhere in the video, it showed a mvc sprite shin Akuma with crazy effects fighting against juggernaught on the guilty gear forest stage, then evil ken fighting a kof rugal also with mad effects on another guilty gear rainy street stage.
I had to know wtf i was watching... and down the rabbit hole i went.....

It was around the REALLY early days for me (perhaps between '08-'10?) when I started watching YouTube Videos, just in general. I was watching things like "Sonic Shorts Volume 2" or that Family Guy parody "Can't Touch Me" being played on a DDR-style PC game.
Then I came across most normal MUGEN-style videos at the time, things like Sonic & Yoshi fighting Spongebob & Super Mario with the classic E.v.E. screenpack and things similar to it. I was just like "wow, this is such an interesting thing! I bet it must be pretty hard to find a game like this!".
If you told that little version of me that he'd wear glasses, have actual friends and start becoming a game designer by working on the games those vids ran on with that same engine, he wouldn't have believed a single word.
Low and behold, here I am starting work on all these different projects using a 20-year old engine with friends I'd never think of having to pursue my dream job.
If I do somehow pull through with it all and become a full-on successful game designer, my heart goes out to Elecbyte for creating what could be the beginning of my future career. :D

YOU MAY BE WONDERING HOW I GOT HERE
Well, I forget just what I was looking for on YT, but I landed on a Sub-Zero and Scorpion vs Nightmare SSJ video and then later a ??? and Shao Kahn vs ??? and Team Nicktoons (I forgot half the video) both done in Mugen. Kind of said whatever and moved on, in probably January 2007. March 2007 rolls around, I remember Mugen is a thing and then I end up downloading it.
August 2007 was when I stumbled on MI after dumb me would look around Mugen Depot without realizing it was a shitty warehouse for a couple months and stopped doing roster videos (no I will not reupload those to YT because I will get struck in the head with the copyright bat, since one used Ozzy's See You On the Other Side and another used Slayer's Seasons In the Abyss, while the other two used random VG music). I refused to come to Guild until October 2007 due to the rulechange (it was about two months I think). Looking back, I was being really petty and resistant to change.
Also 2008 to an extent, and especially 2009 was when I turned into my infamous trolly asshole persona which is a persona I honestly regret having. Caused so much unnecessary crap. I wanna say I finally began shedding that in 2013.
Weird to think it's been almost 13 years now!

I'm late to this party, but 20 years of MUGEN are definitely something to celebrate.
I got started on RANMA characters, moved on to Ironmugen characters, then to all KOF Characters. Made many friends along the way, and fell deeply in love with SNK ever since. It's been a great excercise for creativity, I love it.

Well, when I first discovered Mugen, My brother downloaded a DBZ compilation which he thought was an actually DBZ game then he started looking deep into it and found out that it was fighting game engine. so we basically just made our separate mugens with different characters. It was pretty awesome especially finding out about F1 and among other things. Plus I love crossovers.
I'm not gonna lie although people didn't like this era of Mugen when Mugen was popular on youtube due to stuff. It was definitely the most fun I had with Mugen since it was just so fun to see what other people build is like.
It's good to see it still around because I really do have fond memories and I always get nostalgic even though I don't really play much of it no more.
Mugen Is something that I will always cherish.

I remember back in my high school days I watched vids on youtube on Mugen being amazed that something like a "Everything vs Everything" sort of game even existed! Being a fan of fighting games I used to be a lurker around Mugen Infantry and a few other places before finally decided to be a part of the community. I started with MFG, then MFFA and broadened my horizons until I was with the Phantom Gs, Newage Mugen, etc, even tried out some cool shit as a palette maker before learning the basics of stage design by none other than Exshadow himself. In a way I am still glad I have this as a hobby and it's still going strong, and I seriously have strong hopes for IKEMEN GO to become a good successor to an otherwise fun as hell game shared with a lot of you awesome peeps out here :). I'm very glad I managed to make some awesome friends around here online because of Mugen too.

I was quiet but knew of mugen. Lots of the time though all I knew about mugen was that you could do crazy battles with 3 characters simultaneously. I tried out mugen a bit in 2016, loved how I can get whatever character I wanted and make crazy fights. As time went on, I wanted things to be more competitive and make mugen to commercial level but to do that will be a long road especially when elecbyte is dead. IKEMEN will take the throne sooner or later unless elecbyte comes back, although I have a lot of fun with the engine, I still imagine many other possibilities it could've have if it were open source, so I do have a little disappointment for what mugen is today. We always have that glimmer of hope that we can better the engine which was done by many creators, and now that I'm learning the code for mugen and engine learning as a whole, I do want to help with mugen/Ikemen to be commercial level.

Wow... taking that trip down memory lane eh...
I was but a teenager enthusiastic aboot fighting games, a mere few month after my parents finally caught up with the time and got us a descent internet provider I discovered rpg maker, it was cool... but i knew deep in my heart that a fighter maker of some kind existed, back than people didn't tell you to ''google it'' we ''yahooed''
fighter maker was fine and all... but mugen was just casual friendly to me, plus the mugen window configuration made everything simply simple.
I feel bad aboot being a leech for 15 years... I'm only smart enough to contribute financially, but i am more than willing to contribute... financially if it's the only thing I can do right now.

The database: https://network.mugenguild.com/guild/start.html still has plenty of early 2000s stuffs like the Fighters of the weeks which was my favorite where it features several old dos Mugen characters winning the award. Note that the link to the Mugen creators' websites were mostly offline.
