Action Comics will be written by Dan Jurgens with art by Patrick Zircher, Tyler Kirkham, and Stephen Segovia. The premise is incredibly weird! The book stars the pre-Flashpoint Superman, who migrated over to the nu52 universe (along with his wife Lois and newborn son Jonathan) last year. The Kent family had been living in secret while the nu52 versions of Superman and Lois lived their lives, while pre-Flashpoint Superman did Superman stuff in secret. This was the premise of the
Lois and Clark book that's been running for about a year, but that's being canned, and that version of Superman is now apparently the only version of Superman in the nu52? But he exists alongside "Clark Kent", who might be the nu52 Superman but depowered or something? This seems really weird and confusing. Oh and Superman's costume has basically been returned to normal; no more high-necked collars or armor seam lines, but there are some influences from the Man of Steel outfit. Not sure about those boots, though!
Gene Luen Yang is leaving the Superman book, but he's creating a third Superman title, New Super-Man, with art by Viktor Bodganovich. This series will follow a Chinese teenager who gains a portion of Superman's power. Yang's run was great so this should also be great!
The Super-Sons book is about pre-Flashpoint Superman's son Jonathan acting as Superboy and teaming up with Damien Wayne as Robin. No creative teams announced.
Supergirl is finally getting another main line series, by Steve Orlando and Brian Ching.
That Superwoman book still has no real details released about it (besides that image, as far as I can tell) but now we know it'll be written by Phil Jimenez, with art by Jimenez and Emanuela Lupacchino, so it should be good no matter what it turns out to be
Tom King is taking over Batman from Scott Snyder, with art by David Finch and Mikel Janin. James Tynion IV is taking over Detective Comics, with Eddy Barrows and Alvaro Martinez on art. Really excited about those writers! Over in Detective, Tim Drake is back in the present and back to his awesome Robin outfit, more or less; it looks like he's still going by the name Red Robin, though. Batwoman, Spoiler, and Cassandra Cain will also feature in that book.
Scott Snyder isn't done with Batman yet, he's launching All-Star Batman, with a rotating team of artists on each arc! Currently announced artists are John Romita, Jr., Paul Pope, Sean Murphy, Tula Lotay, Jock, Francesco Francavilla. Sounds pretty great!
Grayson is (sadly) not returning, but Nightwing is reborn! Tim Seeley (the co-writer of Grayson) will return Dick to superheroics, with art by Javi Fernandez and Marcus To.
Batgirl's creative team is departing the title, but the general direction will be continued, under writer Hope Larson and artist Rafael Albuquerque. Batgirl will also be reforming and leading the Birds of Prey, along with Black Canary and Helena Bertinelli (back as the Huntress!) from writers Julie Benson and Shawna Benson and artist Claire Roe.
probably the biggest news was that Greg Rucka would be returning to writer Wonder Woman (with art by Liam Sharp), following up on his acclaimed run from about a decade ago. Her new costume seems heavily inspired by the one from the movies, which is fine I guess. Nicola Scott will be illustrating an alternating series of stories called "Wonder Woman: Year One", that will run alongside the present day stories in the same book.
the first arc of this new series is called "The Lies", and it might just be wishful thinking on my part but this whole setup sounds like they're gonna retcon the hell out of the Azzarello version of the Amazons and backstory. Which is great because that backstory almost completely ruins the character of Wonder Woman!
Blue Beetle is back and will star Ted Kord AND Jaime Reyes, which I'm super pumped about. Keith Giffen is writing and Scott Kolins is penciling.
Christopher Priest (!!!) is returning to comics with Deathstroke, with art by Carlo Pagulayan, Igor Vitorino, and Felipe Watanabe. I wish he was doing another, more interesting character!
there's lots of other stuff announced but I mean it's all in that link. I probably didn't need to repost the same information here whoops
So yeah, I have mixed feelings about all this. It definitely feels like a much more sound revamp of DC's superhero line compared to the nu52, but so much of it is just moving backwards. Even stuff like Rucka returning on Wonder Woman makes me feel conflicted; his run was one of the greatest in her entire history, and I'm sure he'll turn in some great new Wondy stories. But I can't help but feel like there was a missed opportunity at getting a newer voice in there. And that goes across the board for many of the titles; while it's certainly an improvement over the many of the creative teams of the nu52, it still feels like a step backwards in many ways. There's still a crazy amount of DC house style artists, which makes everything feel the same, especially visually. I mean sure, nu52 was by and large pretty awful, and the majority of its titles were either doing the same things DC was doing before their reboot (but with a slightly different coat of paint) or they were doubling down on DC's worst instincts, but there was some interesting and experimental ideas (that eventually all fell by the wayside). DCYou, from last year, was much, much more successful artistically, but it never really got a fair shot before DC completely abandoned it, which was a real kick in the teeth.
