PHNOM PENH - RESCUE workers have recovered the bodies of five Singaporean men who were killed in a dragon boat accident during Cambodia's annual water festival, police said on Sunday.
The boat carrying 22 men capsized late Friday as it tried to dock on Phnom Penh's Tonle Sap river after competing in a race during the festival.
More than 200 Cambodian navy sailors and fishermen, joined by seven divers and a medic from Singapore, scoured the river over the weekend searching for the five.
'All the missing Singaporeans were found, and now the mission has ended,' police chief Touch Naruth told reporters on Sunday.
Seventeen Singaporeans were also injured in the accident, which happened on the first day of races. Millions of spectators, holiday-makers and participants flock to the capital Phnom Penh to watch the event.
Nhim Vanda, from Cambodia's National Committee for Disaster Management, said the tragedy occurred because of currents in the river.
'There was a very strong whirlpool around the port area they were returning to, and it hit the boat,' he said, adding that the men were not wearing life jackets.
Singapore's foreign ministry named the victims as Chee Wei Cheng, Jeremy Goh Tze Xiong, Stephen Loh Soon Ann, Reuben Kee En Rui and Poh Boon San, and said the bodies would be repatriated to Singapore.
It said in an earlier statement that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen had written to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to convey his 'shock and sadness'.
Relatives of the dead visited the site of the accident late Saturday, with most unable to hold the tears back as they silently surveyed the river where their loved ones had been swept away.
More than 440 boats, including a number of foreign crews, entered this year's races, which end Sunday evening. Ten nations in Southeast Asia have boats competing in the colourful event.
Accidents are common during the boat races, which involve long, thin 'dragon boats' crewed by as many as 70 rowers, which compete against each other in the sometimes choppy waters in front of Phnom Penh's royal palace. -- AFP

Some of the people over at OCRemix are planning some sort of a gift for Reu's family.

I... really don't have anything to say. I never knew him. But may he rest in peace.
He was a great musician.
:sadgoi:
Damn.
Just...damn.
It was his Evil Ken and Evil Ryu that got me back into MUGEN after quite a long hiatus. So they hold a special place in my heart.
Damn. I think I'll need time to absorb this info.
Reu Kee, damn.. bro can't believe your gone.I couldnt of said, it better myself. Rest in peace reu, you will be missed dearly my friend.
Learned a lot from you, believed in your work.
Thanks for the hardwork you have created, mugenwise and piano wise.
Thanks for introducing me to mugen, and helping me edit.
R.I.P. Reu
Why is it always my friends and family that die?
I'm gonna miss you.
Also note R.I.P to all the other victims. :(
...To a man who once made me feel through the power of his music.I couldn't have said it better.
To someone that made the strings of his soul heard with the power of his creativity.
You will be missed.
See you around Reu.
I decided to add background music to www.ReubenKee.com (http://www.ReubenKee.com). I will NOT close down Reu's site!
He was the last person I spoke to on Tuesday. He was very happy and excited about the boatriding event.
I've spent my weekend away at a friends place, came home, got a MSN message.
Of course I thought it was a joke, he was a fit and very well trained guy, so.. But after I had read the news article, I couldn't hold back.
Now i've spent the entire Sunday crying, just empty all of my energy on tears and thinking about the time I had together with him.
Reu liked to work with a lot of things, he was strictly against racism and his view of religion is __l__ which I think is great.
He helped handicapped people to learn how to swim, with success. He also did music, as I am sure that all of you know. He also created MUGEN characters. Characters such as Evil Ryu, Evil Ken, Dragon Claw, and Project 2. Who was in developement.. sadly, all I can say is that he isn't complete, but he does look godlike. Due to Reu's strict secretess that's all I can say. He was a guy that didn't like to spoil his awesome work too much, and so, I can not say more about that matter. Maybe in the future I will post some screenshots of his very last project that sadly never will be finished, ever. I will remember Reu as a funny guy, full of life and energy, constantly coming up with new ideas for a song or a character or smething else, there was a constant go. Reu did not hate, just like me. He respected people for being what they were, wether they were handicapped, muslims, christians or anything. "You are a human, that's it. Believe whatever you wanna believe, but don't hurt anyone in the progress, also, handicapped persons can't help that they are handicapped. Just remember, they are humans aswell and should be treated like everybody else." Reu was also fond of Dragonboatriding, he was very gifted at it, as well as many other things. Reu was a great musician as I am sure that many of you know he was like Mozart of our time if you ask me. Extremely talanted at what he was doing.
Reu finished military service during Jan/Feb this year, he hated the military and what it was for. "Killing is simply wrong, it is so darn wrong to learn how you kill a person. It makes me sick." When he had time, he would work on a concept for Project 2, and thinking about composing new music. I often asked him what he was gonna do after military service, his answer never changed. He was "Just gonna relax, compose music, and I also wanna create a playmate for DC (Dragon Claw), and after that i'll do whatever I feel like, simply enjoy life." I am sure that Reu enjoyed his life as long as it lasted. He was a person whom enjoyed life very very much. However, his life didn't last very long, which is so darn sad it makes me start crying everytime I think about how such a gifted, strong, intelligent and kind guy like Reu, has to die at such a young age. It is not fair.
With this said, I will take my leave.
- You will be greatly missed Reuben Kee En Rui, not only by your family, but by a whole world.
Hail Reu!!!!!!!!, The Dragon Claw of the Mugen World, Your legend shall Live forever. :-\
"No fear, nor tears can reach me now
the light seems so clear as the night fades away
behold of thy flame, below of all shame
come here, conquer me sweet dreams of paradise"
Rest in peace, Reu.:'( :bigcry: It still good to see all these people care about Reu including myself.

Stronger shadow from stronger light
Closer and closer.
I heard it today, and yesterday. Its getting worse.
What I feared so much, feels so good.
To not give a damn, to give in to it.
Maybe it preparation for going into unfamiliar territory. If anything would happen there, he would be able to ensure any threat would be nullified.
Its so hard to fight against instinct sometimes. Yet sometimes instinct is the only thing that will keep you alive. But it can also strip you of what makes you human.
This trip will be a fight in more ways than one.
The short talk I had with coach before disembarking worries me.

When my brother died two months ago, my mother mentioned something I consider very wise, even is the dead is painful for the ones who remain alive:This is the most beautiful words i`ve read up to now since this thread started Renzo...Your mother is right:
People who already fulfilled their mission on earth are called by God, even if they are young. Seems like Reu was one of those.
Never heard of the guy, but that was pretty much f***ed up, and i am truly saddened by his early death. But no worries, for those who have fallen asleep in death, you will see them again in the future. :)
Goodbye to a good man. Reu was the reason I started mugen and ill never forget that.
From now on, I am keeping Dragon Claw in a permanent spot in my roster. :bigcry:

Man. Reu is the reason I first got into Mugen (Evil Ken) and probably the same for many others. Needless to say, he was a man of many talents and will be missed. He died way too young. :(

while he died in one of the worse ways one can die (young), he died doing what he loved, adn being loved and respected by a lot of people, i personally did not know the specific sport he practiced, or that he gave classes to handicapped children, so more respect for him. now i hope for his family to regain peace and to pass this overly difficult moment in the best possible way; and hope they find comfort soon..
what would happen to his siteBeen mentionned a couple of times that it would stay as it-- read the topic.
As a Mugen creator, he's a Legend - His creations revolutionized the way we perceived fighting gamesWalt, from all the responses that i`ve read so far, yours and one by renzo(if IRC)
As a Musician, he's a Virtuoso - His piano pieces could touch your soul
As a Human being, he was ... the best one can aspire to be.

I even did searches on google to see if this could've been a coincidence. Then I realized I was just in denial and that Reuben had really passed away.
Wow....Just Wow.....This is something you don't see everyday.
He is a Talented person, and still had alot to Offer. but this is a Very sad day.
R.I.P. Reu.....Hope you Rest In Peace
Maybe posting a link to this thread might be good, so they understand we're serious about it.Seconding that, one other thing would be to provide his family with our support, we should plan how to do that.
Also, we need a good redactor. I vote Sepp or Messatsu to articulate the ideas in that article a little better.

So, being a member of a national squad team, Mr. Singapore 2007, and music composer for a film is not enough to have an own entry in an encyclopedia??
Would it be okay to split this into another topic possibley?
I disagree with you, though conversely I feel that's what a lot of the "DragonClaw youtube video" tributes are (note I don't mean all of them, just a few folks are using it for their own little agenda(s)).Yeah, some are probably using the tributes to get more subscribers/bring more attention to their other videos.
Some of these people used to bash the characters calling them cheap. All of sudden something happens to Reu and now the characters are good? Now they're using them in videos?
They know that everyone who's a fan/friend of Reu is going to be looking for videos about him, so some of them are using these tributes to draw more attention to themselves.

Hey, let me put 4 Dragon Claws into a CPU vs CPU battle and call it a tribute. Please... >_>
Here's a good tribute featuring the characters,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTcnzOyoGWw by Mugen Toons
^ That video actually makes me a little sad.
Some people put effort into the tribute, while others are blatantly just using Reu's named to get attention.
I just wanna make a tribute, and I decided to make it private. I felt ashamed for seeing reu as just a guy who makes mugen stuff, so I wanted to make a tribute to him. I really don't want the attention. Why are you quoting me? My comment wasn't even about you. Good grief.

I already know that you wanted to make a real tribute. The problem was the extreme poor quality of the video. Anyway, that was already discussed in the other topic (http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=70435.0). No need to bring that up here. --;
Everyone dies.
It's the final and only lasting Justice.
Are there really people without resentment, without hate, she wondered. People who never go cross-grained to the universe? Who recognize evil, and resist evil, and yet are utterly unaffected by it?
Of course there are. Countless, the living and the dead. Those who have returned in pure compassion to the wheel, those who follow the way that cannot be followed without knowing they follow it, the sharecropper's wife in Alabama and the lama in Tibet and the entomoligist in Peru and the millworker in Odessa and the greengrocer in London and the goatherd in Nigeria and the old, old man sharpening a stick by a dry streambed somewhere in Australia, and all the others. There is not one of us who has not known them. There are enough of them, enough to keep us going. Perhaps.
I have only just signed up to the forum.. However this is really quite sad to hear...
I shall pay my respects. R.I.P Reu
he was an awesome guy though. He composed moving music, and the characters he made had its own style. The way he made them we're amazing. :(
I come back to the forum after a long hiatus and then I hear about this...
Sweet dreams forever, Reu. As long as we have MUGEN, you will never be forgotten.
No, really. No one can forget Evil Ryu and Evil Ken.
If you read the comments, the whole team had agreed on it to favor speed. They were all experienced rowers, knew the dangers, thought the pros were worth the cons.
But yes, it was a stupid move. From the whole team. But even before that, from the organization of the contest, for not making it plainly obligatory.
Not that it's going to change anything now. Five people died.

According to the experts, the life vest wouldn't have solved anything at all. The paddlers were caught below the boat and trapped by the currents. Since they didn't wear a vest, the survivors were able to dive and get out of the current. If wearing a vest, almost all the paddlers wouldn't have been able to escape from the boat and they would have perished from extenuation by fighting the current. On top of that, it seems the 5 victims were knocked out from the hit, so a life vest wouldn't have helped them in any case.
But again, this is just an opinion of the experts and only God knows what could have happened should they have worn a life vest.
