Title: server move / feb 2020
Post by: Valodim on February 20, 2020, 01:36:58 am
Hey folks,

just giving a heads-up that we just moved servers. The old one was terribly outdated, and I had it on my agenda to move it for a long time. Glad I could make it before we got hacked from some unpatched security issue, haha. Sorry it took a while, this forum software is old as dirt now and had some incompatibilities :P

I think I got everything working so far. Search isn't back up yet, I'll have to look into that. Please tell me if anything else looks broken to you.[avatar]//mugenguild.com/~valodim/twi/imachargin.png[/avatar]

Ugh, I messed up some post code still. There's some stuff left to fix, but I'll have to deal with it later. I *hope* everything at least mostly works now.

Not sure if this counts, but a little while ago I tried to change my signature, and it ended up deleting the whole thing. Also, I can't quote posts for some reason.

I was wondering what happened here because I tried to post and it said that the message box is empty when it wasn't.

our favorite pony princess is back! the princess of... what was it again? it started with "F". was it "fascism"? i dunno.

anyway! thanks for the update. i would also like to adress an annoying little problem we've had for a long time. if we enter an URL to our avatar with https:// it will not display anything, so we would have to change it to just http://

Won't display an avatar: https://i.imgur.com/Dd4KX0w.png
Will display an avatar: http://i.imgur.com/Dd4KX0w.png

thank you and welcome back.

there was a brief period where those things were broken. but they should be fixed at this point?

I was wondering what happened here because I tried to post and it said that the message box is empty when it wasn't.

yeah I was still fiddling with some code to make it work again, haha. should be ok now :)

our favorite pony princess is back! the princess of... what was it again? it started with "F". was it "fascism"? i dunno.

All those years and I still love this gimmick! It's also amazing to me that the forum software can mostly hold its own against modern alternatives. I was expecting a much shoddier experience clouded by nostalgia, but it's actually quite ok :)

I properly added https to this server, and it's enforced too (http redirects). So this should be the other way around now?

Hey Val, what does the yellow lock next to notifications mean/do?
Title: Re: server move / feb 2020
Post by: Valodim on February 20, 2020, 05:47:12 pm
Haha, I love how folks have been around for so long they notice these teensy details. It's an indicator that you're looking at the page with TLS encryption. Used to be that wasn't the default, but these days it's pretty backwards to serve unencrypted websites. So that lock is kinda meaningless these days..

Unfortunately the forum software makes some assumptions about http here and there, like with avatars. I think I fixed it now :P[avatar]//mugenguild.com/~valodim/ptwi/smirk.png[/avatar]
Title: Re: server move / feb 2020
Post by: Foobs on February 20, 2020, 05:54:55 pm
It was actually a new-ish member who brought it up on discord, my guess was that it was an "insecure connection" warning.
Title: Re: server move / feb 2020
Post by: Umezono on February 20, 2020, 05:56:21 pm
I noticed it immediately too, but figured it was involved with encryption
Title: Re: server move / feb 2020
Post by: Valodim on February 20, 2020, 05:58:48 pm
Removed it now, it's obviously more confusing than anything. There should be a nice green lock next to the URI in the browser to indicate that everything is nice and encrypted now :)

Here's something I wanna ask as a favor:

Is it possible to make it so I actually appear as a Global Moderator?

I'm not in the list of Global Mods that you can access at the bottom of the forum main page. I suspect it has to do with my MFG network star being first or something. I wasn't able to solve it myself, maybe I missed something obvious though?

Here is an issue I'm having.
I'm trying to modify my "Dxwho Sprite Packs Part 2" topic in Resource Releases in order to post a new sprite pack but I'm getting:
"Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator."
This happened yesterday when I tried and today. I'm use Firefox (if that matters).
I suppose I could "bump" the topic with a new post but its better to modify as is causes less clutter.

I noticed two things now.

1. My avatar won't display because of the forced https. The image only loads from http not https so it won't display.
2. I can't edit any of my posts.

Sorry 'bout that. Them's the times :) I should probably enforce this for [img] tags as well. Browsers are getting more and more aggressive with their mixed-content warnings, and there really aren't many excuses left these days to stick to http.

I suppose I'm doing it wrong displaying external links in the first place, but that's an artifact of this old ship we'll have to live with. :P

2. I can't edit any of my posts.

Odd. Works for me. Anybody else experiencing this? I'll look into it anyways.

Title: Re: server move / feb 2020
Post by: dxwho on February 22, 2020, 10:00:06 am
I log in then I click the modify button. I then add the new sprite links then I click save and it takes me to a screen saying:
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.
That's about the sum of the problem.

yeap, still a bunch of errors to fix  :uhoh2:

It is set up right. The "!" is a mixed content warning, specifically it complains about images served via HTTP such as the one in your signature. I suppose the correct fix would be to change http links in [img] tags to https automatically, which would work but also break images from http-only servers.

We're still getting the occasional user reporting on Discord that they're unable to login to the forums; the same "Data too long for column 'value' at row 1" error. They haven't been able to login even after clearing their cookies, nor tried logging in in an incognito window, or used another browser, etc: none of it works. And I can only imagine that there's a far, far greater number of people who haven't been able to login who also aren't on the Discord...

I'm not seeing that database error in the log anymore - but perhaps affected people have just stopped trying. Can you ask one of those folks to try again, so I get the db error into recent logs? otherwise perhaps I broke something in logging, "data too long" is pretty hard to track without insight on which data at which position :uhoh:

Mobile version of the website is broken, by the way.

you mean, more broken than before? was that ever in a working state? I could apply some tweaks to make the desktop version more mobile friendly, but I definitely won't be able to make an actually working mobile version of the site :sadgoi:

I believe I restored the ftp logins, can someone confirm theirs still works?[avatar]//mugenguild.com/~valodim/ptwi/checkitout.png[/avatar]

I'm a bit inclined to ask active members to ping me to get their accounts back, because there seem to be quite a bunch of dead ones. Also, all of them have had the same password in basically forever

still not working here:
Response:   530 Login incorrect.
Error:   Critical error: Could not connect to server

Did you do any change to our username or password?

Considering how long you keep disappearing it would be better to activelly email each of them  and those that dont answer move to the archived section.

Also probably pass on the control to jnp as well.

No problems here.  I logged in using Filezilla.

Same here, I tried to enter my site via ftp to upload some things and I couldn't, this message appeared:

USER basara
530 Non-anonymous sessions must use encryption.
! Logon failure, so quitting
I can't connect yet, the same error appeared. I'm using WS_FTP by the way (I use it since day 1 and never gave me a problem before)

I seem to be able to log in via FilaZilla just fine, well kinda. Although it does give me an error.
Uploading files SEEMS to work, but also not really, and the update doesn't show on the page itself (I tried testing by just adding an exclamation mark somewhere in text). I cleared my cookies and refreshed a bunch of times, but no dice.
The error is that the hostname doesn't correspond with the certificate.
Maybe this helps: (https://i.imgur.com/UtcJnWy.png)

I'm using FileZilla version 3.47.2.1

Whoop, lots of interest in this :) nice to see, those things kind of went on with the years and I had no feeling for how many people were even still using the service. I'll try to keep up here until things work for everyone interested!

I fixed some permissions issues, that should fix the "550 Permission denied" for folks who were already able to log in.

Generally: The server requires an encrypted connection now. It's 2020, we shouldn't use unencrypted connections anymore. I would expect ftp programs to handle this transparently, but if not, please check if explicitly enabling something like "ftps" or "starttls" in your clients works. If they don't and you still get encryption-related errors, you'll have to use a different ftp client, sorry about that. Make sure to set the server as "network.mugenguild.com", not "mugenguild.com" so the server certificate matches the expected server. I previously had this set up as "mugenguild.com", but that might lead to future confusion since the logins are really all for network.mugenguild.com (except xg I guess).

@xg I had messed up your password I think. Please try again.

Assume that even those that didnt pop up here are still using it, a lot of people dont visit the forum looking for things like this until they try and it fails.

So far, still getting the 550 Permission Denied error, both when connecting and when trying to upload something.

Still using FileZilla. I have very little knowledge about using these things, so if possible I would prefer not changing to another client thingy.

I can now log into the server, but I can't delete or upload any file, getting a 550 error

no worries, filezilla should be fine.

that might be. there are 33 accounts though, with a couple of names I don't recognize at all anymore..

it works now, thanks!

EDIT:
Spoke too fast. I can delete and upload files to the FTP, but once the file is uploaded, I get an access forbidden when I try to download it from a web browser

Apparently, new files are uploaded with the wrong permissions, no read for group or public

I can manually set the correct permissions, but it would be nice if they can be enabled by default for any new upload

I have the same problem.  What permissions did you set?  I have RW Owner, R Group, and R Public.

Even after setting these permissions I still get an access forbidden error.

if it's the error message you mentioned in an earlier post, you need to enable encryption. I checked and ws_ftp should support that. also, make sure to use "network.mugenguild.com" as the hostname.

About the former, I don't know how to configure that, I tried to look at options and I couldn't find it. About the latter, I always use the network.mugenguild.com in the host name/address, so I don't think that's the problem

Not sure if counts, but searching about the 530 error on Google, I found that a possible reason is that the password could be corrupted. Maybe changing it could fix the error??

Well, the error message says that it's about missing encryption, so...[avatar]//mugenguild.com/~valodim/ptwi/wingtf.png[/avatar]

If I'm reading this right, you need to set "server type" to "Server type FTPS/SSL (AUTH SSL)" in the settings? Alternatively, FileZilla seems to work for a bunch of people, if ws_ftp doesn't work please try that.

Regarding this issue I found what happens.
If you tag anyone, the tag might delete the last number of the user's ID. I don't know why it happens but I checked the ids in this post: https://mugenguild.com/forum/msg.2473956 and the actual users' ids.
