I haven't been hyped for a fighting game in a long while. I'm super glad this game is going to be released globally.
Also it's only a small change, but adding those white tassel things onto Ciel's design makes me like her Remake church attire 1000x more.

Apparently this game takes place before the events of the Remake as a "what if?" scenario as opposed to the original Melty which was a sort of spin-off continuation of Tsukihime, so I don't think she'll be in the game considering Sion won't be in it for the same reason (at least in the base roster anyways). Though Len was present in the original game before Kagetsu Tohya albeit indirectly as the one who gave Shiki his lewd dreams after beating Nrvqsr.

I was wondering about that. before Remake as in a story with the characters before the events of the Remake ? But we'll still get Tohno Shiki and presumably Nanaya Shiki and Satsuki and so on and they'll just not be in the story ? Are we going to see if Nero gets replaced and who takes his role, the new sword guy, before the remake comes out ? (I'm assuming Remake still gets released after it)

Nasu has the habit of disconfirming characters if it doesn't fit the narrative (like how he ruled out Akiha and Shiki from being possible Servants in FGO since the Shiki and Akiha of the FGO timeline wouldn't be the same characters from the Tsukihime one). I mean for starters, the only reason a bunch of characters in the original Melty could even fight (Hisui, Kohaku, Miyako, etc.) was because of Wallachia's influence.
The only "new" character I see them adding to the game is that grey haired guy vampire guy with the sword you see in the opening of Remake, but even then I wouldn't be surprised if that's just Roa's new redesign. So unless they plan on making new OCs for Type Lumina, it's hard to gauge at this point like I said though they did say they were going to update and expand the current list of the 27 Dead Apostle Ancestors to make them more threatening considering enemies in other Type-Moon IPs like FGO make them look like shit.

Huh. I never knew about the dis-confirming narrative thing. Although i've got a feeling that when/if this game gets an update/sequel or DLC, they'll probably throw the narrative thing out the window & have it be the post Tsukihime characters from previous MB games, such as Sion, Riesbyfe, Ryougi, etc.
They did that with Dragon Ball FighterZ with the movie & GT characters, & i think Fate Unlimited Codes did that too with some servants from Fate/Zero(?).
Got to have something to convince people to buy the DLC/update & keep the cash flowing, after all.
But ether way, it's great that Melty Blood is back for modern consoles.

The only time I remember off the top of my head where Nasu threw the whole narrative thing out the window was when they added Ryougi in Actress Again through some time traveling/dimension hopping shenanigans. I think it was to promote the Garden of Sinners movie.
The Nasu of today would have never did such a thing considering how big of a discrepancy that is to his whole world building since he stated that only one person in the world can have the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception at any given time hence another reason why FGO's Shiki wouldn't be the same as Tsukihime's Shiki, as the Ryougi in FGO is of the FGO timeline (she has the Mystic Eyes) as she was caught up in Goetia's incineration of humanity.

I never thought to see the day where Melty Blood will be on the Xbox platform! It's sad to see Sion deconfirmed but I'm guessing she's still kicking it with the UNIEL crew.
But I'm still really hype for this! I also hope this opens the door for the other Melty Blood games to be released on modern consoles too.

Curious why, when they have an ongoing remake of the original title that Melty Blood is based off of being done for console, they wouldn't also bring that to Xbox but would so with the sequel series? Surely the market to be had with Tsikihime would be in the range of whatever they intend to get out of Melty Blood with western audiences anyways? Just one of those cases where I wonder why bother to make a foothold in the market if you're not going to establish as strong a first impression as possible. It would be one thing asking for them to just port over the originals of everything prior and tell people to catch up, that's a bit to extreme, but they have the remake coming up soon ANYWAYS and for similar consoles.
Eh. Whatever. My Type-Moon history is short. I played Melty Blood on the PS2 on a Blockbuster rental during my Toonami phase and enjoyed it, good fighting game, likable cast, looking forward to how this one turns out, but I personally never could wrap my head how this whole extended universe was birthed from a porn game. That's evidently not even scrubbed out of its history like Nintendo does with for the most part ignoring their old comics (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dy1VurrXcAE4NGp.jpg), it's just oddly there in the background that if you want the full context you need to start at square one with an eroge visual novel. It's just....acutely weird and so Japan.

Tsukihime will be released this summer (and MB I imagine before the holidays maybe, but yes, this year), but apparently they said it'll only be the Near Side routes, although they'll give everyone stuff to do in those routes. So, if this new MB doesn't spoil the Far Side characters that don't exist yet, and if they don't just reuse old characters, then it's quite likely they'll cut the roster hard. The website is proud to announce that "this new game features a cast of over 10 characters" sooooo yeah that sounds real bad for most of the cast, we're probably getting mostly the Near Side characters and just the heroines for the Far Side. I can't even tell if we'll get Kohaku and Hisui. That said, you already know we'll get more updated versions whenever the Far Side comes out. And then more. And again.

According to what I have read, Lumina takes place 10 days before the start of Remake and wants to explore "what if" scenarios of characters meeting each other before being introduced proper.
So I guess anything's possible. I mean this is Nasu we're talking about, the same person who considers everything in FGO to be canon even the events in between main story chapters.

I was thinking on that tbh -- maybe they'll add in SHIKI Tohno as a playable character? Assuming Roa doesn't appear, or maybe they'll just make a new villain entirely.
I kinda had a bit of a theory earlier today that the more routes they add to Tsukiremake, the more characters get added to this game as DLC. Unlikely but eh, doesn't kill to be creative. Something like Satsuki finally getting her route and maybe Sion appears in it, finally adding her to the Tsukihime canon, and then she's made DLC for Type Lumina. Idk, just an idea.
Kouma appearing does, at least, give some weight to the idea of him playing a bigger role in Tsukihime remake as opposed to just being an illusory "final boss" in Kagetsu Tohya. This makes me believe Len might show up as well, since she's got a chance of having an expanded role in Arc's route this time around.

It's not really a waste of slot, because it didn't stop them from making another character. In fact, it seems more like an attempt to inflate the roster a bit more since they can reuse many assets from solo Hisui and solo Kohaku to have them occupy another slot as a pair, but if they added someone else, they'd have to make new stuff from scratch.

That's the point. With a roster of around 10 characters you'd expect some diversity within the cast and not already falling into character alt territory. With the limited space the maid duo feel like padding. They may play different from their base versions, but it doesn't change the fact these characters were already there to begin with.
That's like if Guilty Gear Strive took their equally limited roster and added a Sol & Ky duo character instead of someone new or returning. It'd feel like a massive cop out despite the character being mechanically different. It stagnates the roster and makes it even smaller than it actually is.

Which is a fair and understandable reason to do so, but it doesn't negate the fact that it's a disappointing pick and is still worrisome of how diverse (or not-so) the roster will end up being due to these possible reasons.
Maids may be a bit of an iconic Ice Climbers duo for this series, ever since the first Melty Blood, but it would feel a bit disheartening if the rest of the roster going forward is just clone characters. I know I wouldn't want three Akihas again... even if I would take V. Akiha.
It makes ME worry that characters I want to see return, who do have the chance to return given the new/rebooted timeline, may not end up returning and will be sidelined in favor of the much easier (and much less diverse and interesting) clone characters, either out of necessity of laziness depending on the actual reason. So far Type Lumina has been doing a lot of things right in the build up to its release. I can forgive Maids if its the only clone character on the roster, but if this is the start of a disappointment streak then I'd feel very remiss that Type Lumina got me all hyped up in the first place.
Call it what you will but I definitely think, given how the game has been promoted so far, that the Maids duo is a waste of a slot regardless of reason.

this "wasted slot" nonsense has been a meme since the days of smash bros brawl. macaulyn is right, the inclusion of the maid duo didnt stop anyone else from being included, what stopped them was logistical constraints. if you're worried about the diversity of the roster, rather than being upset at pointless things like the inclusion of characters that require little resources, you need to be looking at the bigger picture of how much the studio is capable of. theres not gonna be someone more "unique" if the studio is just logistically incapable of putting in that sort of dev work.

That's not my point at all -- my point being, yes, the dev team may not have a high budget to make every character in the game as unique as possible. Yes, they may also be on time constraints given the game releases in basically a month. Yes, there's also the legacy of the character(s) in question that makes adding them a bit safer. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna be like, "Well, okay then. I understand why they're in, so it's alright."
I mean I get it, I do. But I'm still disappointed and uninterested. I just don't want the roster to amount to around 10 characters and look at the Maids saying, "you coulda been someone else, if only." They have valid probable reasons for being in the game, but said reasons just don't change how I feel about it.
At the very least, I admit -- it's just one slot, so I can stomach it. I suppose this is mainly my bitterness from other fighting games in recent years with how those projects have been handled. Smash, SFV, KOF XV, I have my own issues with those games and I suppose I'm just paranoid that some bigger issues would begin to plague Melty Blood as well. I wouldn't want the remainder of the roster to be made up of clone characters such as Shiki Nanaya, Mech-Hisui, or V. Akiha (even if I like the character). It would kinda make the remainder of the wait for the game feel very lackluster. Only time will tell, I suppose. It's overthinking things, I will admit, but I feel I have my reasons to be worried.

You've just listed a bunch of stuff basically explaining why you're acting a bit spoiled, and owning up to it anyways, so I don't have anything else to add there. Only thing I could say is that the inclusion of "clone characters" is very rarely a corner cutting measure as opposed to extra content that is added at a fraction of the cost of fully fleshed out designs. Budget constraints are set in stone, you're basically only gonna get what's planned out until the DLC hits. Unless the entire game was just one copy of the same character, viewing clone character inclusions as inherently lackluster is myopic. Viewing the game holistically and getting a feel for the development time and effort it takes to create the characters already there should probably give you some perspective on why such entitlement is a major impetus for the crunch culture in game development.
In a hypothetical game with Ryu, Chun Li, Guile, Dictator all of this is fully utilized for 4 distinct character designs. The inclusion of Evil Ryu or some other clone cuts down on a lot of the cost, allowing for the inclusion at less stress to developers. Its basically extra content. When fans complain about how disappointing and lackluster it is that Evil Ryu is included over Zangief or Dhalsim, implying a market demand for more totally original content, you start to see the reason why rushed low quality games and crunch horror stories are a thing. Granted we are talking about Capcom characters, and big studios like Capcom or Nintendo have a lot more resources to work with. I am just using those characters for brevity- to show 4 distinct character designs that take a lot of time and effort to fully realize.
Idk, this is a probably an unpopular opinion for gaming subcultures where entitlement is a big thing, but I tend to subscribe to the idea that fighting games dont need huge rosters to be quality games, especially for smaller studios where the only way to meet expectations within the AAA industry would be crunch.

A good thing to consider when you're inevitably disappointed that your fave Melty character isn't included is that this game is less about Melty being revived and more about Type Moon's push this year to see if Tsukihime is still a viable franchise that can make them any money

I don't mind the maid duo being in the game and I'm well aware their inclusion doesn't bar anyone else from appearing. What I'm disappointed in is that French Bread are already adding in alts of already existing characters before the roster even hit double digits with an announced roster of around 10 at launch which I'm trying to emphasize.
Then again I should be expecting this since It's Melty Blood after all with half of their roster from Actress Again literally being alts, just not this early.

I'd like to rescind my earlier disappointment. Maids now look more interesting to me than they have before. I'm glad they made sure to make them really fun to make up for the fact that it's two existing characters stapled together. Not that they never did that before, but now to ME at least they look very compelling.
EDIT: I also wanna add that the website hasn't updated to add in Maids (which I didn't think they would anyways) so I think this doubles as the gameplay showing of Kohaku and Hisui alone and together. Which is fine, honestly.
So I think... next trailer we see, will definitely be a new character, since now all the revealed characters have been covered in one way or another.

Hisui stand-alone trailer… guess I was wrong. We’ll probably get Kohaku’s in the next 2-3 days given the pattern of two trailers per week that Type-Moon is doing. Which is fine I suppose.
She looks pretty fun, I think she’s even faster here than she is in MBAACC. She still has setplay but they also present her as a bit more rush down? I like it.

If we're going by that logic then the only characters that remain would be Shiki, Ciel, Arcueid, and Akiha. The rest of the characters were only possible due to Wallachia's influence be it their fighting style (Miyako, Hisui, Kohaku) or existence (Kouma).

Hisui and Kohaku are joke characters, their whole movelist is comedy, so I don't count them ; and Kouma exists outside of Wallachia. I did originally expect him to be cut if the roster was downgraded to 10 characters but there's nothing that prevents the real Kouma from being included, especially if they want to give some more spotlight to his appearances in Shiki's life, like including the short story with Kiri and the flashbacks with Kouma in the mansion. Miyako is taken more seriously than the maids here, the only way she appears in the story for MB is if her martial art skills are real and not an illusion. That or they go the other way, make a joke out of her like the maids, and have people in-story treat her as a kid. But that trailer doesn't seem to be going that way.
I'd expect Aoko before Len, if Kouma is the real one and not a Wallachia/Len dream. Nero and Roa are obvious bad guys, but I don't know how they'll go for it if the remake introduces new or revamped villains. || V

Roa is in a weird position if they keep pretending that Lumina is only a prequel to the remake and doesn't include the events of the remake proper. Roa can't already show up if the Remake hasn't happened yet, and they can't have the original Roa to avoid "spoiling" the remake. SHIKI would be the obvious replacement, except the remake is only the Near Side, we're not getting the Far Side yet, so I'm not counting on anything from the Far Side (Satsuki being an exception because I'm assuming she'll definitely show up in the remake). Then again they could have SHIKI shortly before he turns into Roa I guess. Or maybe SHIKI just as he turns into Roa. So yeah. There's a lot of presumptions that should be obvious, but the claims that Lumina is a prequel and the remake will only have the Near Side throw a wrench in all of them. Even Nero is in limbo as long as Type-Moon is ignoring him in everything they've shown about remake so far and trying to make us believe he's getting replaced by that new white haired sword guy as "the ancestor hunting for Arcueid". (but since they're obviously reusing all the previous characters like Kouma and Miyako, at this point Nero will definitely show up in Lumina, he's too big to skip it)

This Red Arc is completely different from the Red Arc from previous versions of Melty. The one you're used to seeing is literally just Wallachia's fake version of Arc, while the one in Lumina is the real Arcueid where she appears during a certain point in Remake in Ciel's route.

thats because melty blood as a whole is just a "route" within the many, many branching storylines of tsukihime, and its one that is relatively tame. a lot of the sequels are basically what-if and alternate reality scenarios. since its a fighting game meant to be taken seriously theres really no reason for all the eroge stuff to be included.

Just spent about an hour fucking around online and playing matches as Ciel.
First, the online is so clean. I had no delays, or lag, or disconnects apart from one (but I blame that on me having weak internet). Bought the DX edition for the full $69.99 just cause.
Game is super goddamn fun, so fast and enjoyable and it doesn't feel like it's hard to play. It's easy to pick up but very challenging to master. I will be putting many hours into this going forward. Spectacular first impressions so far.

I'm not exactly surprised with Neco-Arc showing up, but I'm still surprised they did before many of the other characters.
I suppose that her meme status as of late may have played a part in her being included so soon.

...when she's already got her own route in the form of the Boss Rush. As shitpostesque as it is for a story route, it's pretty on brand with every game that's included her as a regular playable character.
Her arrival wasn't so much inevitable as it was imminent. There's a reason Type-Moon really urged people to not spoil that route online lol
Honestly quite glad she's dropping soon, I unironically greatly enjoy playing the cats in ACvB and AACC!

I think Lorewise Nanaya in MB at least is tied to the Night of Wallachia who doesn't show up in the current timeline yet

In the original MB, lore-wise the only reason characters like the maids and Miyako could fight as well as the appearance of Roa and Kouma was also because of Wallachia, yet here we are.

Before some people start freaking out as to why FGO characters are being in MB, there is some lore relevancy here regarding Dantes at least (dunno about Ushi lol). If I remember correctly Roa does exist in the Fate timeline, but is absent because Dantes was the one who killed him (using his black flames to kill him permanently) which is why he's depicted with Roa in his reveal trailer.

Dantes looks like he was made for this game, he's a perfect fit, he actually looks so good ?? Ushi, not so much IMO (I mean her style, she does look good), but hey we see another of her 5 Shanaoh Ryuuritan secrets apparently.
I like the bodysuit better, her original design is a bit too much.
Yeah, FGO just decided to not make any pretense right from the start with the practically naked lolis and it only ever got worse. At least Ushi got her model / sprites updated and it got a little better and older.

"Sion can't work due to the story" means nothing anymore considering the story's been fucked to hell by the appearance of four Fate characters lol
Such is the double edged sword of including so many Fate characters -- if you're a fan of both properties, great! If you're a fan of one, it might encourage you to try the other. I personally just have no interest in Fate, so that's the side I fall on.
Still, I'm happy for those who are glad these characters are included, and Dantes looks a little fun (albeit a bit generic to me).

It looks like they're doing what Mortal Kombat is doing, ignoring characters actual fans want in favor of shoving an amount of guests thats bigger than necessary just to "appeal to a larger audience". Two is already enough, there are plenty of chars from MB itself that people want to see, if they want to add more characters from Fate, why not make a Fate fighting game?

It's probably due to low or average sales. I'd love to see Daemon Bride or Sengoku Basara X get a sequel but I don't see that happening.
Low sales at the time I can get, but I'd be baffled if the same thing happened now. AFAIK, Fate's the biggest impact Type-MOON's made in the west, even bigger than Tsuki and Melty. Mostly thanks to FGO but, still.
Granted I could be wrong.

Someone on Twitter said it's already confirmed they'll have an update at EVO Japan 2023.
And yeah, I think the story excuse is dumb (not to mention probably dead by now), but at the same time, they probably decided on all these Fate characters because Fate/Grand Order doing so well was what lead to Type Lumina coming to fruition to begin with, from what I hear, as to grab people who play that game a lot.
In any case, while I have some personal preferences as to characters I'd want to see (Len, Eltnum, Ryougi, & Satsuki come to mind), I think it probably doesn't matter too much as long as Type Lumina continues to get substantial updates/extra content for a long time.

The game seems to be successful for it's size, so I doubt it will end anytime soon. They can do what Street Fighter 5 did and support it with lots of DLC for a few years.

Neco-Arc teased that she has more invasion plan ideas. And given how much these last couple boss rushes deal with the Multiverse, and even old MB Miyako makes an appearance as a boss, I wonder if the next possible DLC wave could be an invasion of classic Melty characters. Len, Nanaya, Sion, Nero, Ryougi… I dunno. It could be fun. And a cheap and easy way to get them back into the game.
Why do I feel like we’re just gunning for an HD remake of AACC by this point lol
