Title: WWE Themed Full-Game Idea
Post by: Sean Altly on August 08, 2012, 04:05:12 am
So, I was hanging out with a friend of mine recently and I was working out a moveset for John Cena in case I ever made him for Mugen. He commented that if I had Cena and Punk done, I should make a WWE-themed full game. So, just for fun, I started working out movesets and ideas for it. I think it would be interesting, sort of a new take on the old Wrestlemania arcade game that looked like Mortal Kombat.

The sprites would be the same style as Punk and Cena here.

Now, since it's a full-game, I could go crazy with custom gameplay and a grapple system and all that, but then it would be getting perilously close to a wrestling game. What I would want to make is a fighting game starring WWE wrestlers, like a toned down, 2-D version of WWE All-Stars.

So then I thought, make the first game have 8 playable characters and 4 bosses, just like Street Fighter II. This idea led to my friend and I debating who the top 8-12 guys are in current WWE, because just like how Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game used current stars and reflects its time, I would want this game to consist only of current top WWE guys who are going to be around for a while, except for the four bosses, some of which are part-time guys who would definitely be "bosses." So here's the basic list of 8 we came up with. We tried to consider their position in the company and varying sizes/styles.

-John Cena
-CM Punk
-Daniel Bryan
-Sheamus
-Randy Orton
-The Miz
-Chris Jericho
-Then either Kofi Kingston or Rey Mysterio (Mysterio is a main-eventer and former world champ, but Kofi is on his way up and would fit in just as well)

Then the bosses would be:

-Kane
-Big Show
-Triple H
-The Undertaker

I joked with my friend that Miz and Jericho would be head-swaps with different specials/supers, but then I realized that would actually work quite well since they have the exact same outfit these days. The Undertaker would be the final boss, and the reasoning would be that the "plot" of the game is about breaking Undertaker's streak at Wrestlemania. The title would either be "WWE Road to Wrestlemania," which makes sense but is overused, or "WWE Last Man Standing," which I like better because it fits the fighting game theme and hasn't been used for any game or PPV names yet.

Anyway, I wanted to discuss the roster with you guys and bounce around some ideas. The game would have a generous amount of custom get-hit sprites for certain moves, which is why the roster would be so small. I might consider a grapple button/system, but I really want it to feel like a fighting game starring wrestlers so I probably wouldn't go too far with it. What do you guys think?

Hulk Hogan should be the secret true final boss imo, he's All-American awesomeness packed inside a human body. :2thumbsup:

Only current guys! :P

I also forgot to mention my idea for Level 3 Supers. Everyone's L3 Super would be called "5 Moves of Doom," and would be a sequence of moves where you have to input commands at the right time. For example, Cena's 5MOD would go:

-Running Shoulder Block > Running Shoulder Block > Protobomb > Five Knuckle Shuffle > Attitude Adjustment

And Randy Orton's would be:

-Clothesline > Clothesline > Counter Powerslam > Viper DDT > RKO

You get the idea. What would you guys suggest for other people's 5MOD sequence?

This is completely irrelevant, but I had a moveset written up for Undertaker in a TXT file.  However it was more of a universal Mugen kind of deal rather than what you have planned, and it had a bunch of supernatural crap to go with his character.  I had one for Kane too, but he was mostly a semi clone (think Ralf/Clark in older KOFs) but with different properties and supers (such as a Raging Storm type move with his pyro.)  I'd share my ideas but I don't think you really care.

Daniel Bryan would be a very interesting character as he'd need a lot of custom animations for his submission moves.

Triple H could have an overhead with the sledgehammer, and since he's a boss you can give it significant (but not TOO fast) startup.

I have a bunch of ideas as a WWE fan, but I doubt you wanna listen to me drone on.

I think Kofi Kingston is a better choice than Mysterio for 2 reasons: 1) Mysterio's not what he used to be, so putting him on a roster that's about current talent rings a little false IMO and B.) Kofi gives you the opportunity to have a tag team represented, with team supers with Truth (and maybe Evan Bourne?) like Kyosuke in CVS.

Also, since your bosses are all guys who've failed to break the streak (Big Show couldn't even do it with Albert helping him!), I think it'd be cool if that's the reason they're sub-bosses. Which means it'd be REALLY cool if Shawn Michaels was also a (secret?) sub-boss.

And Undertaker should have ungodly hard A.I. Like SNK boss level, break your keyboard over your knee A.I. with Gill's Resurrection super.

Wow, I didn't even make that connection as far as the streak goes. That makes perfect sense though. Also, Shawn Michaels was a choice for a sub-boss, but then I remembered Kane existed so I replaced him. He'd be a good addition though, and if Big Show wasn't all over the title picture these days, he wouldn't even be in this and Shawn would be taking his place.

@MC2

That's why I made the thread man. Just to talk about ideas and throw stuff around without too high expectations that it will actually get made. I also had an idea like that for Kane, where he would do the pyro thing and it would create geysers of flames around him. The Undertaker would have lightning stuff as well I assume, probably a move like Rain's Lightning Strike but with him doing the classic Undertaker one-knee pose. Post your ideas, I'm interested, if you don't mind typing them all out for an idea engineering thread. :P

Aww man Stone Cold Steve Austin ain't a choice? he was my favorite. especially when his story would tie right into the Undertaker's they had a killer 6 feet under match back in the 90's. oh well. it's good to see some of the guys from the 90's in the roster.

Only current guys, man. Undertaker and Triple H still occasionally wrestle, but Stone Cold never does. The Rock wrestles more than Austin does these days, so if either of those guys were in it'd be The Rock. I'm trying to stick with current stars as much as possible. Undertaker is the least active guy on the list, but he'd make a great final boss due to his status and the story.

the game seems like a neat concept. I hope it comes to fruition.

Well, since John Cena is the brawler type, I was thinking maybe Clark Steel and Ralf Jones might fit the bill for some of his moves. Also, possibly Goro Daimon and Jax Briggs (Mortal Kombat) as well.

Alright here we go.  I actually used this moveset on Rugal's sprites for an attempted project just to see how it goes, but I got kinda bored with it because it was Rugal and not Taker himself.

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Sorry for anyone who read that wall of text lol.  I'll post more if people really find it that interesting.

You should have Cody Rhodes in his whole evil Dr. Doom persona as a regular character. I guess it would be the closest thing to a playable villain, since i'm going to guess that the bosses will be unplayable.

Okay. Totally irrelevant but JOHN CENA FOR MUGEN YES PLEASE! ASGDISKGDIKYGDOASJHDL

*ahem* Okay, now that's outta my system, I actually imagined what WWE would look like as a 2D fighting game. I imagined it as fast-paced but not exactly combo-heavy. I could also imagine reversals and countering a heavy part of the game.

I'll have to think more about this, since I didn't really expand on the idea myself when I imagined it for myself. Also, I vote Mysterio over Kofi because while they're both high-flyers, Mysterio has more distinct moves (compared to the roster in general) and his size (we gotta have a little guy here).

Also I vote Kofi Kingston because all rosters need a black person or you're racist. >:(

Also, JR should pop up like the "Toasty!" guy in MK and scream BAH GAWD if you get a good combo string.

While I'm giving out ideas, how about having the stages be based on how far you are into the arcade mode as opposed to character based.  It could be something like....Monday Night Raw for the first few fights, then Friday Night Smackdown, then Summerslam, Survival Series, Royal Rumble and finally Wrestlemania for the final battle with the Undertaker.  Maybe throw Bragging Rights or Armageddon in there somewhere.

Every round could end with a ringing bell like World Heroes, and maybe after the match is won a sound clip of Tony Chimel, Justin Roberts or Lilian Garcia announcing "Here is your winner, ____" which could easily be ripped from either WWE 12 or 13.

Is having a specific stage order even possible in MOOJIN?

To an extent, yes.  You just have to put specific characters at specific orders in the select.def arcade mode config, and assign them the stage as necessary.  For instance, a certain group of guys would have the Raw stage, then the SD stage and it can progress with the DEF.  The bosses can have the "big four" shows, with Taker obviously getting Mania.  I'd expect Triple H would get Summerslam since a lot of his biggest matches were at that show.

It might be hell but I would go all in on it getting "perilously close to a wrestling game", with a universal grapple system, momentum based system and such. Sounds cool, even if I hadn't actually watched wrestling since like...2002.

@Cazaki

Yeah, but I wouldn't want to make a wrestling game, I want to make a 2-D fighting game with WWE Wrestlers. There will be a heavier emphasis on throws obviously, but we get plenty of wrestling games from professional companies. I would want this to be something different.

@MC2

Yeah, the stage thing is a great idea. Arcade mode would start at Raw, facing guys like Kofi and Miz, then to Smackdown and such to face Bryan and Sheamus, etc. First PPV or two would be guys like Cena and Punk. Then The last 4 would be Summerslam (you have to defeat COO Triple H in order for him to give you a shot at facing Taker at WM), Big Show at Survivor Series, then Kane at the Royal Rumble (he has the record for eliminations IIRC, plus he could be trying to protect his brother's streak), and finally Taker at Wrestlemania. It would be pretty cool.

I think a universal grappling system is a bad idea, since there are guys like John Cena who brawls and Kofi Kingston who uses martial arts, and they would be at a disadvantage.  I do think the game should be primarily offense based though, since WWE matches are usually trading offense.  Long ranged throws, high/low mixups and a guard break system would be good ways to achieve that.

as a wwe fan i love this idea and agree that it shouldn't be too focused on grappling since we get enough of that from the official games. i'd also rather see rey than kofi.

just my two cents; I know you said you'd be basing them on their current appearances but I think when it comes to undertaker and kane, taking it oldskool would be a good move. You know the kane where it took 6 chair shots to put down and 3 tombstones rather then this current half baked kane. You could do the same for the undertaker. Maybe even throw in paul bearer as some kind of support system for the 2 of them.

Lol Kane w/ Hyper Armor ... but it might work.

not necessarily hyper armor, he could just use a reversal code and accompany it with a animation of kane simply realing back a few inches after a hit like he used to then follow up with his signature throat thrust.

The roster is current, but I think it would be a great idea to base each guy on the peak of their career, sort of like how in the Marvel games the characters are based on their most recognized incarnation.  For instance, "The Marine" John Cena, 2011 pipebomb CM Punk, 2010 Miz with Alex Riley, 96/97 Undertaker, 2002 Jericho, modern Sheamus, etc.

Well MC2, what about the Divas, you can't plan a WWE Project without these lovely athletes, my choices are:

 - Eve Torres (In both Face and Heel personas, I liked her as a Face than a Heel)
 - Kelly Kelly
 - Beth Phoenix
 - Askana (She is the "Getting Past The Censors" incarnate, so why not)
 - A. J.
 - Natalya
 - Kaitlyn
 - Layla
 - Rosa Mendes
 - Kharma (I know that she's not literally a Diva, but she counts too due to her big weight)

How about if the divas are either cameos or strikers, that might work.

Wow, that sounded really sexist. o_O

I wouldn't have any divas in this, just because I don't think there are any current divas that I would want to make. Plus, I want to keep the roster small and there's not a single diva in WWE currently I would put in over any of the WWE guys that have already been mentioned, not because they're women, but because they just aren't very good or notable. The only divas I would ever be interested in making are Lita and Kharma, and neither are with the company any more.

Would you consider other past diva's? Like Trish Stratus and Mickie James? IMPO (In my personal opinion), they were the best diva's ever.

Anyways, Shouldn't we get back to the task at hand instead of talking about Diva's? (Not trying to be sexiest)

They wouldn't necessarily be at a disadvantage, they could just excel at non-grappling moves. I agree with the game being offensive but not in a combo way, more of a technical kind of offensive game. Probably have no air-guarding, but differing jump arcs and mobility for each character among other things.

Say, Sean. I don't think I read this at the topic, but what button system are you thinking of using for this, 3-button, 4-button, etc.? I could come up with movelists, but I wanna know that first, to be safe.
