No worries about people griping about "copyrighted music" getting passed around (while you were on hiatus, Blackjack raised a minor stink about it :\ )

Also, it's easier for some people, given the size of a MIDI compared to an MP3.

With Sound Blaster AWE64, the midi is not FM synth, but wavetable synthesis (even in DOS). So, the midi quality is higher. (Like real instruments playing.) Try it and see!
