You know maybe not but this year, SNK Playmore has not seen fit to install a booth at the Tokyo Game Show 2009. The lack of new titles and the need to make some economies are undoubtedly the main reasons for absenteeism. This has not prevented Masaaki Kukino, the branch responsible for Research & Development at SNK Playmore, and incidentally the producer on the game The King of Fighters XII, to be back at the show. Her presence did we not escape and we are eager to interview him about the future and the next episode in KOF coming soon. This is a little restraint that evokes the forthcoming The King of Fighters XIII in front of our camera. It signed an exclusive JeuxActu.

From the latest Famitsu:

(Cancelled Titles)
[DS/SNK]Denshi Maid Techou: Koi no Iroha
[DS/Marvelous]Bokumono Characters: Yasai de Pon!
[PS3/SNK]King of Fighters Maximum Impact 3
[PS2/SNK]King of Fighters Maximum Impact Regulation A2
[360/SNK]King of Fighters Maximum Impact 3

No surprises at all, those were games we heard once and nothing more since then.
Maybe the XII failure affected other titles.

The good news: We're getting KOF XIII

The bad news: We're not getting KOF MI3, and it looks like SNK has taken a hit recently.

Now you can never unsee it.

QuoteThe bad news: We're not getting KOF MI3
That's bad news ?
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

Ridureyu

It is if you had fun with MI2 and Regulation A.

Now you can never unsee it.

It it bad news to me :(

I want to know how the Judeim Saga is finished. Also, Jivatma even if a weak boss, was really cool.

Mgbenz

Yes I have. MI2 and MIRA were fun and I actually find the series' story and characters quite interesting.

I also want to see who Judaim is and whatever happened to Soiree.

Titiln

i was looking forward to mi3 mostly for the next gen lookin kof characters :(

Keku

I had oodles of fun with MI2 and MIRA. Sucks that MI3 had to be canceled. D:

Bastard Mami

ah, kof mi is not that suprising of a decision, considering that they fired falcoon, I guess they decided to finally put them in the backburner in an official way. CAncelling the iroha game is weird, I tought their fanservice games for the ds were selling decently.

Loona

The MI series ruled for the several gameplay mode and fan stuff like alternate outfits (an option 2D can never handle quite as well) - I didn't care much for the plot, especially  with the Meiras shoved down our throats, but the KoF scene was better off with the series around than without it...

It'd be nice to see the main series eventually take on 3D or at least some of the other strenghts of the MIs.

At least the cancelling of titles to come (that including an Iroha-centered game is good news IMO) should help them focus their marketing efforts in the future - it's not one of their strenghts, and spreading their efforts in many games doesn't help.

walt

But guys, am I missing something?

Like ... they were cancelled for good?

Keku

Falcoon was MI's lead designer. With him fired, MI3 was doomed.

Iced

A lead designer like falcoon only influences the artistic look and overall design, those can be replaced, you can keep doing games in the style of someone that was even fired.

If anything you would only lose alternate outfits that seem out of fashion shows.

WAY TO GO WALT, YOUR SPRITE TRIBUTE KILLED MY MI3.

Loona

Hadn't falcoon left around the time the game was first announced anyway?

aesthetics-wise, I'm sure there are other people to replace him, and it's not like NeoGeo Hakasei couldn't cover any gameplay issues after his UM work.

Majiel

Pretty much when Falcoon left, it was only a matter of time that MIA2 and MI3 would get canned.  When the head producer is also the defacto designer of the majority of characters and probably holds the liscencing rights to them, there's not much else to say --;.

It's kinda weird though. Even though KOF:MI had three different game releases, I can't help but look at the similarities of this cancellation and Capcom: Fighting All Stars.  Both of the games were 3D games with a sorta 2D gameplay.  They both had eerily similar new character designs.  Both had similar settings from some of their name-sake games (Capcom=Metro City, Final Fight; SNK=South-town, Fatal Fury).  Both had mediocre reviews before/after being released.  And they were both cancelled around the same time a very dissapointing 2D fighter comes before/after in its place.

Now that its cancelled I wonder if any development art/designs will leak in the future hinting what we could be missing.

SuperSaiyanAnthony

Now I am puzzle, King of Fighters XIII is coming soon. But what happen to Neogeo (or Snk)?

Since I like to play The King of Fighter Series. But I heard about what happen to snk.

walt

Lurk moar...

SNK, creator of the NEO GEO game platform, entered bankruptcy in 2001, and was acquired by Playmore, thus the new name SNK-Playmore (SNKP). They closed down due to games no longer being profitable as they could be easily pirated. So in 2 or 3 games later they moved away from the Neo Geo platform into another platform, like Atomiswave.

Nothing happened to SNKP, they just half assed KOFXII and it didn't return the profit they were expecting. They been making very lousy marketing decisions and their distribution channels have always been awful, as they're mostly Japan oriented. It was not only until short ago that Ignition entertainment decided to do the distribution in USA and Europe (?). Currently they fired Falcoon, producer and main designer of the KOF MI series, so maybe it wasnt all that much of a good idea to continue the game without a steady and visionary leading man.

Keku

Solution:
Hire Shinkiro as lead designer of everything.
