This is a topic about things you have learned video gaming in general.

I'll start.

Animal Crossing:learned how to pay the mortgage on a house, learned how to fish, etc.

Resident Evil:If you want to kill a zombie, shoot them in the head.
EarthBound[SNES]:Stay away from hippies and the only way to defeat an alien megalomanic is to pray.

Metal Gear Solid:really taught me about military weapons and espionage in general and it also taught me if a woman all of a sudden unzips her jacket to show her bra, don't trust because she's probably a double agent working for China.

Ape Escape:Never give a monkey an intelligence-boosting helmet

Legend of Zelda: continuity is for losers.
Actually Zelda does have a continuity. The creators are still trying to figure out some bits of it and some games and even disagree on some, but it has one.

Most RPGs :
-the Church is evil
-the government is corrupt
-resurrecting/creating a big evil monster for your personnal evil plans is dumb unless you're also suicidal
FF7 : some people decided to change the definition of emo
If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

It has terrible continuity beyond the direct sequels. As far as I'm concerned making the games connect was a terrible idea, I'm not fond of the current guy in charge. Frankly unless they get all the kinks worked out right away with their master plan, or at least make the games in between fit better than what they've been doing I don't think they should be popping zelda games out. Twilight princess and wind waker so far is the best attempt at filling the gaps but even they are sketchy at it.  Even worse was them making a parallel universe continuity. It's not even like the games explain that. If you played each of the games straight through in order of release date without any outside knowledge of the series like interviews or other people analyzing it, you'd find a huge lack of continuity. At most you get references to the other games. It would feel like it's just a different story with reused concepts, like it should be. ugh but I should stop discussing this, I've had to do it twice already in the last week with people and this isn't the place for it either.

Pokemon, LoZ, Dragon Warrior 7: it's ok to explore the huge dangerous world on your own without even being 16

Doesn't matter. That's just you blinding yourself.
The only continuity break is how the known locations change place for no reason, but the story itself has a clear continuity, even if some bits were retconned. The one big break is how Zelda 3 said the mages that sealed Ganon the first time were human mages, and OoT retconned that. If you stick too closely to the games themselves and just look at what is obviously gameplay choices, of course you'll see continuity breaks. If the authors explained various stuff outside of the game, then that's canon.
The story itself has a continuity, period ; whether you like the time-split or not, whether you chose to ignore what the authors clarify outside the games or not, it's your problem.

That's one thing for this topic : don't necessarily trust what you see, Word of God prevails - screw reality, if religion says so, it's true.

More I forgot from RPGs :
-if there are monsters around your town, nobody will think of asking people from other towns on the other side of the world where they have no problem with much, much bigger and stronger monsters.
-keep killing birds, one day you'll be able to kill an ox.
There was this site that listed all the "rules" of RPGs... It had stuff like "the power of the main hero is proportionnal to how gravity-defying his hair is". Aynone has the link ?

why should they keep the same people like the sages for all of the LoZ games?
Because OoT was SUPPOSED to be the very war that Z3 was talking about.

Lots of sites are dedicated to it, I'm pretty sure there's a Wikia on it, and the part where Aonuma explains the time-split and so must even be quoted in the Wikipedia article IIRC.

You can find a lot of theories and such here on http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Zeldapedia but if you have trouble with interviews, two important ones are on here http://www.zeldalegends.net/index.php?n=continuity the parallel option and the miyamoto option each have a different interview in them.

Mother 3:Never eat purple mushrooms, they will make you feel weird

Soul Calibur IV:The online for most fighting games sucks..

Ape Escape:Never give a monkey and helmet or they will try to change history

Legend of Zelda:Wind Waker and Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time:Never go into dark temples, you'll end up with nightmares due to the atmosphere and the music(I'm looking at you Shadow Temple and Earth Temple)

This is the only level and I wanna be the guy:Be careful when you see a cheesy title for a game, it may end up being hell..

  • A frame here, a pixel there.
Physics are completely different than what they told you in school. For example, collisions between objects are always determined by rectangles that are invisible to the naked eye, and these rectangles may or may not intuitively follow the shape of the visible object.

Funny enough, This is pretty plausible IRL.

I didn't believe this until I saw a link (I cannot remember what it was). It basically broke down how much punishment the body can take before collapsing. If the shot isn't a headshot or the caliber of the bullet isn't big enough, they have a chance to keep on coming until shock kicks in.

Pokemon taught me that no matter what you accomplish, in the end you look like a prick with a medal.

Some Final Fantasy games taught me you can only trust yourself. Because when you level others, they might end up disappearing when it's important!

Baiten Kaitos taught me to never trust yourself.

Dragon Ball Z games taught me things can only be tampered with so much (Really, the series have been redone SO much).

And video games as a whole, I've noticed that school doesn't really influence your ability to survive a zombie attack. Really. I haven't run into a lot of games where education can kill the final boss.

The biggest lesson we learn from video games:

Violence can solve ALL your problems, without fail.
