Well it seems as if the major film companies are not happy with the free-for-download Terrordrome game.

Warner Bros. has contacted the creators of the game in regards to the "illegal use" of Freddy and Jason, but so far, no actions have been taken.

Orion Pictures has actually sent them a "cease and desist" order regarding the use of Ash Williams.

The creators have contacted a copyright lawyer in the hopes to continue with the game.
This is pretty disappointing and hopefully the Terrordrome guys will be able to continue, but I have a feeling they won't.
Warners and Orion have a lot more money to spend on lawyers than they do.

Duos.act

This is pretty funny since the Terrordome guys were raising a mess about use of their sprites and stuff a while back.  Trying to make money off other peoples properties and the like.

Karma ftw.

Nucka

They're not trying to make money off this game. It's free.
What the movie companies are concerned about is the potential damage it might have if they ever intend to release a professional game like this....which they never will.

Cybaster

Yet another sad thing for all the fangames community. I really hope a compromise can be found, and the game's production won't end.
Not that I particularly fond of the game (clumsy gameplay), but it's still a huge work and very nice effort to bring horror movies villains and heroes in a single fighting game.

Off-topic : the only game I'm really worried about is Sonic Fan Remix, really.

Faab

It continues without Ash for now..  but it is really disturbing and worrying for fangames, and now we see mugen (or fighter maker) projects can be charged too.
no newz of Warner but Orion owns the rights for army of darkness ( and not evil dead  --;)
The problem is:  why this Ash and not the mugen one, or all the DC scruffy stuff owned by Warner.. just a shame.
really worrying...

Cyanide

Possibly this was targeted because it is a complete thing. You can't say as a company "we were going to do that" when all someone has done is released a conglomeration of files that don't do anything unless added to something else. Terrordrome was a one download have everything. Mugen is a search and install and results in a less complete product.

Releasing a game full of them, yeah maybe, single characters, not so much. Even if we do have better idea's than the company.

In M.U.G.E.N there is no magic button

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

O Ilusionista

This is totally pathetic. The companies will hurt their images...for what?

This.
Also, companies are supposed to protect their intellectual property.

Duos.act

Also weren't the guys trying to charge for the complete game?  That's making profit off someone else's IP.

If they were, they are obviously in the wrong and it no longer stands on fanart grounds.

where is the source for that? on terrdrome`s website nothing never stands about selling the game

XGargoyle

In case you don't know, the main guy behind Terrordrome is working on the professional videogame industry. He probably knows better than most of you how IPs work and their implications, and if not, at least the lawyer from his workplace would do.

Regarding the C&D letter, this is yet another example on how big companies don't take a glimpse of new business models or current trends. Most probably, Orion Films (or any other big name) wants to keep their IPs available to whatever big studio comes to them and for rights to create a videogame based on their franchises. Even if the big studio is top-notch quality such as THQ or Atari, as long as they pay $$$, they will grant the license anyways. They don't care about the quality of the product, they just care about getting money of their IPs.

He said about legal charges, not about selling the game.

And nothing valuable was lost.
But those sprites!
I think sprites are the only valuable here...

Which they would never allow a mugen creator to use and which nobody takes for the same reason.
