Playing Bad

This topic of discussion has been floating around my mind for a while, and some recent events at my Fighting Game Community made me want to ask:

Do you consider "Playing Bad" is a valid argument in a discussion to qualify someone as "not being fair in the game"? By playing bad I mean turtling, spamming and any other type of maneuvers someone could bring in a fight.

See, the actual issue happened at regional tournament of SSF4; the winner gets a paid trip to Sweden. So theres this guy who played with Balrog who got into top 4 only with jabs and roundhouses. So this other guy loses to him and started to bitch about it REAAAAAAAALY BAD (making it public, posted on the groups wall, etc.)

For me, well... I'm not exactly a good loser (they even created the term "Renzoku Smash" to denote when someone smashes the wall, his stick or any other things in an explosion of rage)  :sugoi: but I think that if someones manages to win against you using a so simple technique... well, maybe you are not that good at the game, and it's time to examine what went wrong with your gameplay.

Jesuszilla

when trollgief does it it's awesome

that is all

Renzo F

Oh yeah, with Chicken Yodel as bgm...
Raging and bitching about it is like failing in the trap for me, btw.

Nero D.

only jabs and roundhouses is fucking beast
i cant count the reasons i should stay

one by one they all just fade away...

I respect the fact that someone gets to top in a tournament like that balrog player, besides it's almost fair in most cases to say in tournament play the only one to blame for your losses is you

on the other hand it peeves me off when I'm just playing between friends and some keep trying to win at all costs while doing really boring shit like repeating the same basic shit over and over again, but hilarious stuff happens half the time
that's why I don't mind playing with retarded friends

This guy turtled REALLLY bad. You know, "basic" Balrog stuff, like siting on the corner and waiting, mashing jabs, etc.

Jesuszilla

should've picked t. hawk

Play to win. Especially when there's an actual prize involved. Doesn't matter how "lame" or "cheap" someone plays, if they won, you lost. /thread

Street fighting is all about analysis, prediction, and reaction. That's it.

Duos.act

Yeah if there's money or something involved, it's every man for himself.

Otherwise yeah I try not to exploit people like that unless they really deserve it.

Jesuszilla

I only do that with friends. I wouldn't want to give a bad impression of myself in competitive play.

Vans

Kinda sounds like he knew what he was doing.

Er... normally playing bad doesn't really let you win a lot of matches, unless the person doesn't know how to deal with your attacks. Then it's the other person's fault for being unable to beat it.

Heck, when will Jin players learn that it's really easy to counter Ice car if you use the D version? It may be effective against noob players, since the attack comes fast, but after that it's boring.

Exactly mi point when I talked about the issue with some pals: You know, instead of go bitching about how horrible turtling game was playing that Rog, they should learn to play under pressure and see what went wrong with them.

Also, several times when I've seen a player bitching about how someone plays, and he tries to do exactly the same "to give a lesson" they end losing. So, there should be some ability in the "offending" guy, right?

Is it my fault that you fell for my stupidly simple tactic?

Screw you, every strategy is legit if it was programmed into the game.

I guess it's a SCRUB thing to say, but since I play for merely recreational purposes, we've set rules among my group of friends, in order to enjoy the social experience of a fighting game, like "No Shotos, because they're boring as fuck" or if you're beasting too much with one chara, change it by the 3rd time you win.

Pretty much everything else is fair game. ANNOYING Poking LPs/LKs is a good way to set a distance away from a throw. BAD Sweeps are just a reminder on how you should always keep your guard up (or down in this case). Using high priority moves or abusing a character's speed is just strategy, and from a game standpoint is a simple matter of Rock/Paper/Scissors.

SSF4 gives you the tools to beat the "Playing bad", like EX moves.

protip: if things start getting too onesided or boring, everyone randomselects from then on

Cyanide

j.HK, c.HK, j.HK, c.HK repeat!

That works more often than it should, really.

No if he made it to the top with jab and roundhouse and you couldn't use anything to outprioritise him or counter it, you're not really as good as you think you are. There is sticking to a strategy and adaptation, raging man could not adapt.

In M.U.G.E.N there is no magic button

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it's not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.
