This is kind of a double post from another board- but ... hey everyone, I've always been enticed by the idea of Mugen- but I just want to know the one that is the least laggy or such, the one with the most characters like I've seen so many photos online of, and I guess well the most popular one that works the best as well! Please help me out! I'd appreciate any positive feedback.

Hi there Paulos.
It seems you are under the impression that mugen is a closed engine, its actually not. You can add to your own mugen build as you get more characters that you find interesting.
If you want a big pack to start off with and learn how to make the characters avaliable I suggest using the guild introduction pack.

Oh, I'm so confused, sorry to sound stupid it's just seeing all those characters makes me go "That's the best looking game fighter wise almost ever" and adding characters other people made! I'll try what you said, as I thought it was simple like an emulator and such.

Iced, now I'm even more confused, I don't know which "pack" to get ... there's like 8 buttons to pick and I don't know what "format" it will download, what characters will be in it/etc, as I have Mugen 1.1, and I only have two Kung Fu Man, tried adding a character in the chars folder but that did not work :(

You're on the right track! Take the folder of the character you would like to add and place it in the "Chars" folder, then go to the "Data" folder's file "Select.def"

You should see a line that goes something like...
"kfm, stages/stage0.def
kfm720"

Underneath that line, write the name of the character's folder you added to your "Chars" folder, save it, then start the game up. You should see your new character in game!

Lets say you enjoy ryu from street fighter and scorpion from mortal kombat, there are dozens of creators making their own ryus and scorpions, meaning you can get a ryu you really enjoy or one you are not a fan of.
You could even make a game full of nothing but ryus and scorpions and every single one of them playing differently.

Dont worry about making questions or presenting us doubts you might come across.

Paulos

Thanks Iced for letting me say stuff I appreciate it- and I'm currently using "Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter" mugen which I think is a mistake... I tried to find the Select file which I did, then I put in my character's name in the hiddencharacter area, and I'ma see if it works, but a lot of the slots were taken up character wise so it's like ... there's no real places to ADD new characters that's where I'm confused a little.

Try using a "clean" mugen with no more chars inside, that way when you start adding up you are not replacing anyone and you can get used to adding what you like.

Paulos

I'll go back to Mugen 1.1, brb...

Okay, I put in Agrias *Agrias Oaks from FFT* and her FACE appeared, but there's still so many EMPTY character slots, I mean NOT that many, that's where I'm going "How the heck am I supposed to have all those great characters everyone else on Mugen has while all I have are the two Kung Fu guys and this Agrias?"

You go to releases here and you find chars. :)

You can also get that introduction pack and copy some chars from there into your mugen. you can also go to mugenguild.com and you have several creators there, each with their own characters, where you can pick whoever you want.
There are many creators out there, you are bound to find people that code in a way you really enjoy. Go and find your favorites!

Also there is a request area, where you can create a request thread and ask for help in finding specific characters.

Paulos

I guess I'll try that, this is all new to me- but it was nice playing Agrias Oaks my favorite character from the underrated game FFT PS1/PSP, I'll go look into that "releases" area you were talking about ... uhh... I'll go look o_O.

You can also use this to find your characters /stages/stuff http://network.mugenguild.com/guild/start.html
Welcome to the Guild btw.

HOnored to be a part of it, I'm just really bad when it comes to putting things together character/bio and instruction wise >________>

That's another thing, I have no clue how to add MUSIC to the battles, oh I WOULD LOVE THAT, stages aren't so important- but music is!

Ah!
Take the stage you would like and open the "____.def" file for the stage. There's a piece of text that reads "Music=" or "bgmusic=" (Something to that nature)
Put the mp3 you would like to use in your "Sound" folder and then after the "music=" part, add " sound/______.mp3" (Name of the mp3 with "sound/" before it)

Feel free to back up files and experiment, yourself!

Berry

add the mp3 files you're going to use into the "sound" folder

go into the stages folder and open the def of one of the stages. it won't always be in the same spot but look for the line that reads
bgmusic = sound/
and edit that to match the name of the MP3 you want to use
bgmusic = sound/MP3NAME.mp3

Paulos

REBIRTH OF OROCHI.mp3, great song by the way all- and it worked, thank you Master of 1000 Usernames and especially Rap, you really have been patient with me... it is so nice playing a fighting game in this way. Sure I don't understand all the moves/commands and special moves but it's just so IMPRESSIVE. Thank you ... oh I'm sure I'll be back with more problems <lmfao> but thanks so much.

Legendary DeMoNk@I

and keep in mind...when you put in a stage and it happens to crash with an error message like this "spr = stages\97NewFace.sff"

just simply change it to in its DEF file

spr = stages/97NewFace.sff    (the save it)

"/" that slash has to be like that for winmugen

Ages ago i used to delete stages because i didnt know thats what that was. i thought they were broke lol

Memo

Download vselect and use that to add chars to your mugen.
Its easier and faster than having to type names in the select.def

Paulos

God I'm so bad at this, the AI just destroyed me when I was Captain America against Agrias Oaks, lol. Bad at the game and bad at the placing chars in... how does vselect work? It work for Mugen 1.0/1.1? How many chars maximum can I put in? And does anyone suggest the best character TYPES out there for Mugen, ones that don't crash and popular characters? Thanks.

Best character types are solely down to preference. What kinda stuff you into? Popular and stable are too broad.
