Hey everyone, Aosora/masterkakashi here (some of you might remember my Character Creation Tutorials from years ago or not).I also made a few anime characters eons ago. I've been building a tool I wish I'd had back then, and I'd love your feedback.

What it is.

SFF Lab takes a sprite sheet and builds the SFF for you. It also works as an SFF editor for files you already have.

Auto-Cut and review

  • A custom trained local only AI model finds every sprite on the sheet and reads the action labels (Walk, Run, Punch...)
  • Frames are grouped into animations and lined up on one ground line.
  • A review window lets you fix anything before exporting: draw, move, resize or delete boxes, change a box's class, add or retype action labels for sheets that aren't labelled, regroup after your edits, reorder frames, onion skin.
  • Export writes the SFF, a shared palette (ACT) and a DEF. You can also build alternate palettes and pick portraits.

SFF editing (v1 and v2)

  • Multi-select and drag sprites between groups, reorder groups, renumber sprites or whole groups.
  • Set axes by dragging or typing, with undo and redo.
  • Saving copies the sprite data byte for byte, so nothing gets re-compressed, and it keeps a .bak of the original.
  • Export sprites as PNG and palettes as ACT.

What it does not do.

It doesn't make animations (.air) or character code. That's still Fighter Factory or your editor of choice. SFF Lab just gets you to a clean SFF, palette and DEF faster.

Status
Coming soon. It isn't released yet, so there's no download. I'm still testing it on real characters.

Questions for you

  • What's the most tedious part of making a character right now?
  • Would you want stage tools later (layers and parallax preview)?

I will be announcing a closed beta soon. Tell me your setup (Windows or Linux, MUGEN 1.0/1.1 or Ikemen GO).

Feedback and ideas welcome. I'll reply to everything.

Is there an option to reorganize the palette table? That would be real handy for making Color Separation projects.

Can you expand on the question ? I'm not sure what you mean exactly. So i think the answer right now is no but i don't think it would be hard to implement i just need to understand exactly what you're asking for.
