Well guys, its been a tough ride. As a newbie to Mugen Character making, I've finally finished the standard starter anims... for my Original Comic Book Character: Punishous. There are no more blank animations, he has everything from standing, to jumping to death anims. My next stage of the char making process now is the attacks and special moves. This'll be a toughie  to get right, as I have seen from other chars I want Punishous to have a special feel and technique as to how he is  controlled and played, and of course it won't be the same without all the original quotes and poses that make Punishous who he is. Heh, a lot of it will probably go over your head with all the references harking back to my comics.

Heres the new video showcasing all the completed animations: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BfO4aF5P498
and here's the original one: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ViP5fYqg2KQ

----------------------------------

Here's a little bio for you guys so you can get an understanding as to his personality and fighting style.

Full Name: Proffessor "Punishous" Muncherous
Species: Muncherous. - (Genetically Engineered Lifeforms created by a Ruthless Warlord called Egg.)
Occupation: Inventor, Chancellor and Interrogator.
Homeworld: Planet Munch. Dimension W.
Deity:  Muh. (Pronounced - Mer.)
Weapons: Hand Buzzer, Laser Whip, Hex Vision Ray, Assortment of Guns.
Appearance: There are three breeds of Muncher, Yellow being the dumbest and usually used as labourers and assistants. Cream being the normal kind in Muncher society. King Munch is cream. Punishous is the Purple breed of Muncher, these are the most intelligent and often carry a genetic trait of psychic abilities and Hex Powers.
Character Traits: Punishous, like all Munchers, is a fragile being. He is made of many alien materials, made from a infamous alien recipe known as the "Sinerus Recipe". They mostly containing an ingrediant known as "Slot". This is a fragile substance that helps Munchers with their flexibility and lightning speed. Munchers are often heard saying "Better Peeeowww off!" before zooming off at great speed, leaving a dust cloud and making the sound of a racing car (Eiiiiim!) in their wake. Because of this Punishous is extremely weak but is almost impossible to hit. What Munchers make up for in lack of strength they make up for in technology and mass of numbers. Munchers love guns and they're favoured firearm is the infamous "Biwa Gun", named after the sound the lazer beam makes. Munchers live up to their name too and can eat through anything and anyone. They are known in Dimension W as an infestation, like Gremlins they multiply purely by getting wet and they munch and blast there way through the universe.
History: Punishous arrived on the Planet Munch one day in an asteroid. It is unclear where he actually comes from, whether he was an original creation of Warlord Egg or not. As soon as he arrived, he swore allegiance to King Munch and became his personal inventor. Punishous is responsible for the creation of the Robot Munchers and for many other robotic vehicles that Munchers rely on to conquer. With great success, Punishous was promoted to Chancellor and Torturer and has been assigned two assistants, Trevor and Raymond, who help carry out his punishments. He has gained a reputation for being one of the most feared members of Muncher society. But deep down, as much as King Munch adors his undying loyalty, even he has his suspicions for Punishous' true motives.

Looks... original.

I can't really suggest anything... I'll watch the vid later.
What's the good of phenomenal cosmic power if you can't blow something up?

Hey Mugen Guild. Just thought I'd let you know of my update on my WIP. Punishous has all his standard animations completed. Just need to do the attacks and special moves now. Check out the first post above for all the updated info and a link to my latest youtube video showcasing Punishous.

BigJ

Very nicely done. The after images for when hes running though dont seem necessary to me.

dimension_w

I'm thinking of replacing that with a smoke trail. Or with a comic style Text spelling out "Eiiilm!" as he zooms across. Thats a reference to my old comics. Its meant to sound like an F1 racing car when Munchers run ;) Thats one of the sounds I'll need to find online too then. Something not too annoying if Punishous' is gonna be running alot.
(ps. If anyone is interested in trying him out, pm me? I'd like to collaborate and get some testers and scripters to help with the special moves I'm animating right now.)

He looks great dude, it don't say original for nothing.

Well I don't like to say this often but you inspired me to try my hand at original spriting.

I used to do a comic years and years ago between 8-11th grade called the ? squad. (the question mark squad is how it was said) because they couldn't think of a name :p.  Childish sure.  But I had one really easy character I could make that was just a tiny green blob with big ol eyes... named blob!  Oh this will be fun to try out o.o.

Maybe i'll look for some help in doing it ^.^ doesn't look like you needed a lot of different colors being it's cartoon style.  Only difference was mine was on paper so I'll have to transfer him to another medium... oh well!

wish me luck ^_^

dimension_w

I wish you luck Fox. I have a whole universe of chars from my original comics to choose from. I was originally gonna have Starsim as my mugen fighter. He's your stereotypical smily faced star with special powers. (Someone on this forum mentioned he seemed similar to Sega's Ristar.)

But the fact he'd have a special effect on him, glowing and such seemed too complicated for a first time char. So I went with Punishous. He and the Munchers were typical kiddies type chars, easy to draw (or in my case, scribble) I did over fifty comics starring him and his species. Well of course 20 years later and he's still easy to draw. :)

The whole reason I'm doing this is because I can't wait to see the character come to life; animated and speaking. It'll be a dream come true once he's finished and has a voice.

dimension_w

I've updated the first post with some new animated gifs of some of Punishous' attacks. I've done them all now. from standing to crouching to air attacks. Now I'm gonna focus on special moves and the jokes for taunts, intros, victories and losses etc.

thanks i been working my butt off trying to make a good sprite of him.  Since he was just a drawing of a green blob it was easy to just make him one single color for a body =p  the joys of cartoons.  How in the world do you make gifs of him?  I would so like to put mine of him on here.

edit:  Here we go.

Crude but he was all one color and thats pretty much 95% of his likeness, the shape is just a teensy bit off.

dimension_w

Heh I look forward to the day when Punishous can fight him, they look like they'd pair up very well in a Team Up.
Well guys a little news, scripting on the attacks is going well, I have a friend doing it for me. Hoepfully he'll be done soon. At the moment I'm animating his running dust cloud, his five different intros, three losses, 7 Taunts and 4 victories. Then I'll be starting with the buddies, special and hyper move animations.
It appears as if Punishous will rely on many different sorts of buddies, because he'll be very weak with low hit points, but he'll be hard to hit and his buddies will swarm the opponent.

Ryanide

I know you want him to be hard to hit, but his small size will cause most high attacks and projectiles to go over him. You should make his hitboxes very generous, because otherwise his size alone will make him a very scrubby chatacter who will limit most opponent's movesets to low attacks and sweeper moves. It'd be much better if you make him hard to hit by adding an assortment of evasion moves and counters.

but I love the comic-y feel of this character. I say keep the speed lines when he runs. XD

Heh do not fear I HAVE made his collison boxes generous.. In other cases where people have said too many large boxes are bad. they aren't in his case. I've even made his hat boxed up. Heh, hit his hat and he's hurt :P Silly. But at least you can stand and punch him.

Munchers are actually meant to be the size of a human hand, I've already made it easier to fight him by making him larger. I think he's fine as is, don't worry. I've already tried him in game and he is always hit easily by the computer player.   At least I didn't go realistically and make him the size of, say, Kirby. But nothing wrong with Kirby :P He's a worthy adversary for Punishous :) Both like to eat things.

Heh as for Counters, I have contemplated the old fashioned tech-hit counter. I think I'll see if he can make do without it first. Its tempting. But it may seem a tad unfair if he's so fast and when you finally get a hit in he counters it. :(

Ryanide

Ah good good. He can be hit by standing attacks.

I just hate it when small Mugen characters have hitboxes that prevent normal attacks from touching them.

Tech hit counters aren't so bad really, just make sure they don't start within 1 frame and make sure they have some lag time at the end for the opponent to abuse if they predict the move.

devilmanozzy

Wow, this character really looks fun. I was thinking about doing my first character too, but I fear coding will be the death of my dreams. Great character so far!

dimension_w

Some more news. I've managed to go through a nice tutorial and work out myself how to script the attacks. Now Punishous has all his crouch punch/kicks, stand punch/kicks and air punch/kicks. Just need to tweak the stats for them and move the collision boxes to the more suitable points.

At the moment I've just finished animating his dust cloud and skid marks. Now I need to work out how to include it as a seperate element in his running animation. Do you guys know how I could do this? Plus I'm a little confused with how I could script a "super jump" and a "run in" intro animation like Flash and Sonic have. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

Ryanide

I'm thinking that for the "EIINNN" noise, rather than using a real racing car sound, it'd be way funnier if it was obviously somebody going "Einnn!!"

You could probably have corny "bam!" "pow!" and "hit!" voiceovers for his attacks to give it that extra cheesy comic book feel.

I've updated the first post with two anim gifs of his running animation. Got these online really because I'm asking help in a thread about how I can add the "Eillm" dust cloud as a seperate element, trailing behind as he runs.  I take it you write it down somewhere in the cns and cmd files as a type of hitspark or something.
