Just like the title ask, I recently ran into a older style
Tv set and it acts up (picture scrambles) and a quick
fix is a slap on the side.

It reminded me about the TV sets I had growing up.
I've had TV sets in the past that need a good beating
so they act right or a stabbing from a toy sword to
change channels.

Sometimes slapping my tv around with anger screaming
"COME ON BITCH, WORK!", "YOU POS! I HATE YOU, WORK!"

They all had different issues with themselves, like scrambled
pictures, loss of color/volume.  But a good slap would
fix them all.  What was it about those old TV's?

I cant possibly be the only one that's been abusive to
a TV.

  • For honor!
I would never harm my electronic devices. I treat my lovelies with utmost care, regularly cleaning and dusting them, making sure they're arranged neatly, and that the cords are never tangled.

Yeah I used to yell at and slap the shit out of my old CRT back in the day but I grew out of it after it refused to work and I was forced to dump it. I have a better relationship with my LCD TV now although I must say we've grown apart over the years.

My love affair with my laptop is just so strong, it does many things that my TV cannot.

Old electronics generally don't break easily, that's why you can have an abusive relationship with them, nowadays electronics have us whipped.

Not my TV, but it happened to my washing machine. Eventually I got it looked at and repaired for absolutely no cost (thank god for warranties).

Oh man, I remember have CRTs with dials. adjusting dials not only to get signal, but to get the proper color. Had one of those in my room in middle school... using  a coat hanger as rabbit ears could give you hope for months on end. :D

Just how much do you love the that Companion Cube?

When I was a kid I used to love opening electronics to get a peek inside,
Well I had a 3 disc CD changer and after I put the sucker back together it
Would only read my CDs after a good slap on the top.. I once slapped
The whole top portion off because I forgot to put back the screws and
The stereo died, sad.

When I first moved into the house my mom bought, which was back almost 10 years ago, there was this little, old TV that I used in my room. It wasn't compatible with a cable box, but it had the 3 channels I watched all the time back then, so I was content.

It managed to survive getting dented on the top from a falling heavy object (Since it was placed under an unstable shelf that just toppled over once when I was watching it). It worked perfectly fine despite the big dent.

The ol' TV was put out of commission when one birthday I got a small-ish flat-screen. Even though I don't mind the change, I still think about that TV sometimes. This thread reminded me how miraculous it was that it still worked.

you know, it feels really weird to think back to ten , even 20 years ago and realize we all used to have "dates" with our tvs. To check our favorite shows , to setup videotapes in case you were going to miss them.

Watching tv used to entail more phisical interaction than most anything. It was a huge time sink, it was almost a physical relationship, since you had to be in the same room at specific times in order to get what you wanted.

i have to agree with this. as much as i hate to watch weekly shows now, i used to love to do that back when i had no internet.
some shows even aired very early morning and i woke up to watch them, simply because there was no way for me watch them again.
now with the internet, i barely even look at the tv.
