What’s your strategies when playing?

I'm working towards learning/developing reactive and limited memory AI. As I get further into it, trying to figure out the reasoning behind my choices while playing has gotten tougher. I have realized I'm really not that great at fighting games, which has proven to be a big problem when making AI so I have been trying to study strategies that people have while playing.

Below I've listed a couple simple strategies I really do while playing But I would like to hear some of your guy's strategies, cheap tricks or anything else you do when playing normally. No trick is to small and this isn't character specific; any characters, any tricks.

I know this seem elementary but it's harder to come up with these than I thought it would be. Any help is appreciated!
  • After throwing a projectile I jump and throw another to ensure my enemy can't just hop over the first.
  • Slide under enemy's projectile to hit them on the other side.
  • If my enemy is in stand guard when I'm attacking, I quickly switch to a low attack while they are open.
  • Throw projectile, teleport to other side of enemy to attack.
  • If light attack connects, follow up with more risky attack.
  • If enemy jumps towards me, dragon punch.
  • Neutral jump over, slide under, guard or counter enemy’s projectile. Don’t fwd jump over a projectile without a plan.

For SFA series I immediately do a super when knocked down or if jumping like Chun-li's Kikosho.

Ticks.

Throw an opponent again when recovering from a knock down.

Use a good uppercut move when the opponent jumps like Rolento's standing medium punch.

Alpha counter when under pressure especially in the corner.

Alpha counter when opponent does any attack.

Do a jump in attack, if opponent blocks immediately do an overhead.

Hit the opponent, if they block either throw or overhead.

Ive been playing fighters for so long that sometimes
I zone out and its like my fingers take over lol

Ive done shit before that surprised me like crouching
to dodge standing attacks, hoping over projectiles on
A dime like my life depended on it N shit.

Some strategy I use is stuff like countering air attacks
with DP's or crouching heavy punches.

I like to throw slow projectiles and when it connects
immediately follow it with the heavy (fastest) version
and watch the enemy try to jump over it or counter
just to get hit by it.

get my character's best distance so I can keep on poking and with some charcters a succesful poke becomes a combo.

My style is either total aggressive rushdown or sometimes just "Rush 'n' Wait": Go in and attack, take a couple of hops back and be on the defensive, and then when the opponent uses an attack that can be punished well enough, go all out.

if I'm getting my ass whooped by the same character repeatedly I try to figure out what moves they use that take awhile for them to recover from and counter attack those specific ones, I also use a lot of rolling or dodging

Thanks guys! These are exactly the kind of things I was looking for. I’ve been working on an AI that recognizes patterns in the enemy’s game play and how to react to them. Of course having these patterns in their own bag of tricks too and wheather or not they should change their patterns as the enemy catches on.

So these will go to good use. Keep’em coming.

Start the match with a forward jumping heavy, do a backdash and then a forward jump, run to the opponent right before a roll/dodge, and do a dragon punch after recovering from a knock down are things I find myself doing quite often.

Start the match with a forward jumping heavy, do a backdash and then a forward jump

I was wondering if you could elaborate on the thoughts behind these two. Are these to mix things up, to do something unexpected? Thanks

I mostly play MVC Akuma, and the basic strategy with him is:

Jump in with either the dive kick or air Tatsu, follow it up with crouching Lk, then a combo, if it doesn't connect, back dash into a jump then an Air hadouken.

Rinse repeat.

For teleporters.

SSF2 Dhalsim - teleport a lot and grab. Seriously using Dhalsim's teleport here is both an offensive and defensive manouver.

SFA Dhalsim - teleport with KKK to evade far away

Spiral (MVC2) - keep away (usually jumping or high) with or without striker, summon swords and use her default teleport (usually above the opponent) and either do a jump in combo releasing some of her swords then back away then summon more swords or use the swords to make an arc.

Strider (MVC2) - use Doctor Doom with him as assist, rushdown with combos, do his Ouroboros super. Then find an opening to keep the rushdown going usually by teleporting and keep summoning Dr. Doom.

Eh, I just think jumping normals are the most efficient way to move around while keeping offensive.

I don't really know if that's a strategy thing ^ ^'

Rose SFA - do her Alpha Counter Grab (done when the opponent is doing a jump in combo) then grab the opponent again.

Chun-li and Sakura - do their taunts if the  opponent's health is low if enough.

R. Mika (SFA3) - standing medium kick, if successfully hit do her Paradise Hold.

blocking, mix  up low mid and jump attacks  (almost  every human player always go for the  couch block in games even when iam avoiding with air attacks in multiplayer, spam one of the leap specials, how every in mugen even the weakest ai are pretty good when it comes to block normal attacks) as for attacks like hadoken for zoning (Zoning is the act of controlling your enemy's positioning and/or making them afraid of entering melee range. block an attack then attack with a super).

Thanks guys! I hope more of these will keep coming in.

I have been trying to come up with some ideas for seeing patterns an enemy might do and then exploiting them. But there doesn't seem to be many instances for that in fighting games.

Here is an example of a pattern I try to pick up on:
-I throw a projectile and take note on how the enemy reacts. If they usually jump over the projectile, I make sure I throw a projectile in the air right after throwing a ground projectile. This limits the enemy's chances of evading the attack and gives me more control.

Most of the examples so far are more Reactive and don't seem to rely on finding patterns in the enemy's fighting style. Do you guys ever look for patterns or ever predict what the enemy's reaction will be?

Sometimes.

I notice Ken in SFA2 and J. Talbain do their anti-airs from a distance in succession starting with short, medium and hard.

The AI that I truly hate are usually the games from SNK set on high like Last Blade 2. They're cheap, untouchable and just not fun to play with.
