I think I've finally made enough progress with this, and I've committed to commissioning an original screenpack by Mordecool, to the point where I can make a project thread.

I have wanted to make my own spin on the "World Warrior Tournament" for a very long time. Many of these character designs have existed in some form for me since middle and high school when I would "create" my own Street Fighter characters for imaginary Street Fighter sequels.

I'm going to copy and paste the basic game description from an idea engineering thread I made long ago:

OVERVIEW

The basic concept is that it's a World Warrior style tournament. I've always wanted to make a game like that, and yes I know, the idea of a WW tournament has been done to death. The idea here is that I'm trying to avoid stereotypes, or at the very least, provide interesting twists to the stereotypes or maybe focus on different ones (for example, my Japan rep isn't a karate character or a sumo, but a Kenta Kobashi-esque aging puroresu star). You may remember me mentioning this in my Random Sprite Thread, but some of the ideas and characters have changed since then.

The roster would be small and there would be great emphasis on the Tournament concept, the tourney itself being this globally televised sensation. You'll notice each character has a "nickname," a concept I borrowed from P4A. I really like the idea that these fighters are having to brand themselves to stand out in this huge spectacle of a tournament. I'll explain more about that further on. Here are the planned characters, with any sprites I have to represent them:

PRESENTATION

The whole game would be presented like a huge PPV-style event. Each character would have an "Intro" that's basically a tale of the tape, with a voice over "announcing" their info as if they're about to come to the ring.

Each stage would start as a blank canvas with a ton of people in the audience watching, big screens in the background. Then there would be a wire-frame (or something similar) wipe that changes the floor and background into a "stage" representing one of the countries in the game (a concept I borrowed from the Tekken movie and considered using in CvTW).

The Win Screen would look like a post match interview, with someone holding a microphone up to the winner's mouth and them posing, the win quote being some trash talk or whatever directed at who they just beat.

The VS screen would be a split screen, with each side a front view of the character walking down the aisle, like a wrestling or UFC entrance. It's be fun IMO because you could display some personality in these VS portraits. For example, Tristan would be smiling and have his hand up waving, soaking up all the attention, and Sasuke Saito (the Japanese wrestler) would be wearing an elaborate rob and look all serious and determined.

I think you get the general idea.

Here is a look at the awesome screenpack so far by Mordecool:

Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

GAMEPLAY

The game will have a 4 button layout, but I plan on being generous with command normals. There will be a throw button ala CvTW, and another button with as of yet unspecified usage. I will not be using universal chains or magic series. I'll be consulting with some people to try to create a balanced, more deliberate fighting system that focuses less on easy strings like in CvTW/SHADEs.

The game will revolve around the Offense/Defense system. This is something I really thought I'd come up with until it was pointed out to me that the game Rumble Fish already did it. However I've had my heart set on it for so long that I can't let it go.

There will be two meters, each with two sections. One is the Offense Meter and one is the Defense Meter. You would fill the offense meter by attacking, landing hits, or with continuous forward advancement. You'd fill the Defense Meter by guarding, performing counters/reversals, or with continuous backward movement.

The supers are called Offense Drives and Defense Drives. Offense Drives are done with a full Offense meter, while Defense Drives are done with a full Defense Meter. Offense Drives will usually do more damage, but will be riskier and less safe. Defense Drives will vary by character. They might be utility supers, anti-air supers, specific situational supers like a counter, or a very safe move with low risk.

Each character has a critical technique called a Maximum Over Drive (or M.O.D.). This move uses both Offense Meter and Defense Meter.

The offense meter can have two full stocks. One stock is used for EX moves, while both stocks are used for Offense Drives.

The defense meter can also have two full stocks. One stock is used for an Alpha Counter-style move while blocking. Two stocks are used for Defense Drives.

OTHER NOTES

As of right now, four characters for the game have full, completed spritesets. I managed to get two of those characters done in the last two months, and I've been really motivated so I don't think the 10 character roster is too ambitious. Who are they though? Well:

(Colors and artwork are unfinished)

From left to right they are:

Illian Federov
  -Country of Origin: Russia
  -Fighting Style: Sambo
-Nickname: The Crimson Tide of Change
-Bio: The final boss of the game. Illian is a displaced Russian despot planning a huge coup, but is distracted by the tournament because his ego requires that he proves his own strength whenever possible.

Siege (Real Name Unknown)
  -Country of Origin: Unknown
  -Fighting Style: Unknown
-Nickname: The First Lady of War
-Bio: The sub-boss and Illian's right hand woman. She is mostly silent but calculating and lethal. She enters the tournament alongside Illian to make sure he doesn't stray too far from their coup plans.

Zico Silva
  -Country of Origin: Brazil
  -Fighting Style: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/MMA
-Nickname: The Next Big Thing in Bloodsports
-Bio: A famously violent MMA fighter who is known for his silver hair and no-nonsense personality. He is undefeated and enters the tournament to face other types of fighters as a new challenge.

Quavon Cannon
  -Country of Origin: Canada
  -Fighting Style: Pro Wrestling
-Nickname: The Canadian King of the Ring
-Bio: A brash, cocky pro wrestler who enters the tournament just to fight his rival, Sasuke Saito, to prove that he is the future of wrestling.

Tristan Samroy
  -Country of Origin: USA
-Fighting Style: Unique (mix of Karate, Muay Thai, Pro Wrestling, and others)
-Nickname: The Rising Son of Fortune
-Bio: A young martial artist whose rich parents funded all of his training, but he never has the discipline or patience to master any one style. His parents finally cut him off so he enters the tournament to prove that all of his training amounted to something.

Bryce Lowe
  -Country of Origin: England
  -Fighting Style: Taekwondo
-Nickname: The Brit of a Thousand Kicks
-Bio: Tristan's best friend who is much more disciplined than him. His parents are self-made millionaires, compared to Tristan's parents who come from "old money," and he sees Tristan as his rival. He enters to prove that that he is better than Tristan and to teach him a lesson.

MOVELIST IN SPOILER

Atleif Christensen
  -Country of Origin: Norway
  -Fighting Style: Boxing
-Nickname: The Right Hand of God
-Bio: A boxing preacher who fights for prize money for charity and for his church. A group of nuns are his promotors. I got this idea from an episode of Quantum Leap, lol.

Sasuke Saito
  -Country of Origin: Japan
  -Fighting Style: Puroresu
-Nickname: The Father of Fighting Spirit
-Bio: A legendary Japanese wrestler who has been facing increasing pressure from his promoters to retire due to his age and banged-up body. Instead, he enters the tournament to prove that he is just as strong as ever and that Pro Wrestling can be used as a legitimate fighting style.

Vidael Katdari
  -Country of Origin: India
  -Fighting Style: Jeet Kune Doe
-Nickname: The Thorned Rose of Calcutta
-Bio: A young Indian woman who grew up obsessed with Bruce Lee movies. Her parents were split on her fighting dreams in that her mother supported her and her father wanted her to be a doctor. After her mom dies, her father decides to support her completely and enters her into the tournament.

MOVESET IN SPOILER
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

Elodie "Elle" Shayle
  -Country of Origin: France
  -Fighting Style: Wushu
-Nickname: The Example of Elegant Excellence
-Bio: Originally born in France, but raised in England, Elle is a retired bounty hunter who is invited to join the tournament after she gains some fame from a high profile bounty. She accepts the invitation to break up the boredom of retirement. SHADEs 3 crossover!

Here are some preview videos for the two characters I made in the last couple of months, Illian and Vidael

The other two that are done are obviously Tristan, who will be getting a slight redesign via color separation, and Elle because of SHADEs 3.

SO YEAH

I will be adding to this thread and I will probably request a fullgame board soon. This first thread is for gameplay ideas and feedback.

YOOO! To think that my sorry ass was downright confused at Elle's ending because of her story with Specialist ending off-screen. Glad to know it actually meant something.

Couldn't get to say this when you announced Illian as CvTW's boss, but I'm glad you've got the drive to work in these new guys. And for the matter being, I hope you don't get burned out on them like it happened with that game.

As for the characters themselves, I'd say my favourite is Vidael with those cool razor kicks. Dunno if you plan to do any modifications to Elle and Tristan, but I'm certainly intrigued if the new system may mean something for them.

Oh hey Tristan's finally being used for something :wiseguy:

I have the same opinion.

This project is very interesting, because SeanAlty manages to show all the potential that a game with original characters can have in Mugen, with a great quality of sprites.

I like it a lot, I think Mugen itself needs it, but it's difficult, and SeanAlty can do it all on his own.

Thanks for your effort SeanAlty, I hope to continue to see more projects like this here.

Vidael's throw's hitcount isn't two like it should be. The same problem is for the elbow supermove, the hitcount doesn't raise after each hit.
HitAdd should be used for the throw, not sure about the super, maybe you have a numhits = 0 in the hitdef if it's all physical attacks and not an actual throw super.

Curious, why Jeet kune do for Vidael?

I just liked the juxtaposition of a Bruce Lee-style character who doesn't look like Bruce Lee like most of them do (Fei Long, Jann Lee, both Laws, etc.). When I first posted her design MC2 pointed out that Chie Satonaka is similar to this (young girl who fights like Bruce Lee), but yeah, I just liked the idea of it.

Yeah, still very much a work in progress so there's still a bunch of stuff to work on, but thanks for pointing it out, it's the type of thing I tend to miss!

OMG, I'm super happy to see more of your designs being used again, so this is amazing!
One nitpick tho, as a Norwegian. I don't know if it was conscious or not, but Atlief is not the right pronounciation. It's "Atleif". If you wanted the norwegian name correct. Christensen is correct as well and a very common last name. I'm super stoked that one of the craziest character designers are making one with my own nationality, finally represented in fighting games lol.

I am going to quote my Illian feedback from CVTW thread, since it's more relevant here:

"Kneel" would be "Stanovis na koleni/Становись на колени" or "Na koleni predo mnoi/На колени предо мной". Fool in russian (Durak) is male only, unlike it's english counterpart. Dura/Дура is female. I would suggest changing it to something else. Maybe Posmeshishe/Посмешище (You're a joke)? Strike is definitely not "Zabastovka/Забастовка", it's "Udar/Удар" (Google Translate done you dirty, it translated Strike not as a physical punch, but rather something like VA strike). "Perish" would be "Pogibni/Погибни" or "Sgin'/Сгинь". "Reign" is "Tsarstvie/Царствие". "Attack" would simply be "Ataka/Атака". "I am God" - "Ya - Bog/Я - Бог" or "Ya est' Bog/Я есть Бог". "Take this" is "Poluchai!/Получай!".

Also, it's probably doesn't really matter, but Illian is not a russian name. Not that I'm aware of, at least. You're probably thinking of Illya, which is also a SF3 Necro's actual name. But I guess Illian does sound russian-ish/slavic? I dunno.

So you've decided not to release this update in parts and moved it to 2021?

I guess no more CVTW?

@GreenZed

Yeah I was contacted by a user here about a native Russian speaker doing the lines for me so I'm waiting on those to update the voice.

Speaking of Voice Actors, the only characters that have VAs are Tristan, Illian, and Elle, so if anyone is interested in the other characters hit me up. I know Mugen has lots of Brazilian users and creators so I'm sure someone can voice Zico for me. The Street Fighter, you said  you're Norwegian, maybe you would want to take a crack at voicing Atleif if you have decent recording equipment? I'm trying to make sure the character's voices are authentic. I figure the hardest roles to fill will be Vidael and Siege, so I'll probably go to the Voice Acting Club for those, but the other characters are wide open!

As for CvTW, not abandoning it, I will be releasing everything I've done so far, just not sure if it  will be individual releases (like Mario and Falcon) or a game update. Either way, I'll be putting CvTW Goku, Kung Fu Man, Akuma, Fiona and Bloodtide all out soon because they're all done.

@Chris20855

Thanks man!

Would be nice to see an update video for Illian, once the new lines are recorded.

About CVTW: I personally belive that update would be better as a whole package. I feel like releasing Goku, KFM and Akuma would be redundant. But that's just my opinion, it's up to you for the final call.

Some suggestions for 2-Stock Defense:
1. A Super Armor Mode ala KOF 99/2000.
2. A Guilty Gear-esque Burst Mechanic which can be used at any time, even special moves and hitstun (When allowed).

Gonna do a quick personal nitpick here and say I'm not feeling Illian's lips but he still gives Colossus vibes.

Yeah he'll get an updated video when I get the voice for him, but I've told them to take their time and there's no rush so it might be a while

@RagingRowen

Those are some good ideas, I'll make note of them. Sorry, but Illian's black lips are integral to his design for me!

I love and respect the fact that you're straying away from the usual stereotypes and kinda remixing them for creating new ones. The fact that the token Tae Kwon Do practitioner is not a korean guy but it's black and british, or the Jeet Kune Do guy is actually an indian girl... Good stuff, and honestly refreshing. I generally love all of your designs, so it's no surprise that I'm digging these as well.

Although, if I can make a small criticism, considering the importance you're giving to "non-standardness" for the designs and concept, the choices on the fighting styles themselves looks a bit more mainstream to me. Imo, for any future character, some more obscure fighting styles can help your designs stand out even more. If you need references, Tekken and the 3D era Mortal Kombat games have a lot of relatively obscure real-life styles you can take inspiration from.

About CVTW: I personally belive that update would be better as a whole package. I feel like releasing Goku, KFM and Akuma would be redundant.

I second this. An update release would give a sense of completeness to CvTW, instead of single character releases. And may help you convey the message that "Yeah, CvTW is finished for now guys, now see my new project ;)"
