For those of you wondering what the heck I'm babbling about, modules are simply another type of music file, just like mp3s and midis.

Key differences
Midi - Stores only instructions on HOW to play music, the instruments are provided by the sequencer playing the file, so quality can change from computer to computer

Mp3 - Stores actual sound data.  No change in quality from computer to computer, larger file size than midi (significantly)

Module - Stores not only HOW to play the music, but the instruments required to do so as well.  Quality does not change from computer to computer and is significantly smaller in size than Mp3s

DOSMugen supported module music (s3m, xm, it, mod) but the only plugin I could find for Winmugen that played these files (in_bass.dll) crashed when the music was supposed to loop... until now.

The key was not in setting up the plugin properly, it was in rigging the music file itself, this is accomplished very easily as long as you have a module tracker program (my current fave is Modplug Tracker www.modplug.com)

1.  Open up your module (durr)
2.  On the last pattern (or wherever the song should loop) add the following effect:
          Bxx: Position Jump
and set it to the pattern that should be looped to.
3.  Add a new pattern to the very end of the sequence and leave it completely blank.

If you do this right, Winmugen will never reach the end of the song, and won't crash!! Yay!

You can download the plugin here.

plugin = plugins/in_bass.dll, s3m,xm,it,mod
Line to add in your mugen.cfg

  • A frame here, a pixel there.
Since I'm planning on the music for Silver's stage to be a module, this will come in handy. Thanks a bunch!

*VERY IMPORTANT*

You MUST have this file in your main Winmugen folder for the in_bass plugin to work!

Edit:

Another mystery solved.  The version of BASS.dll must match up with the version of in_bass.dll because the files are not backwards compatible.  Make sure the version numbers are the same!

MODs are like midis. but with their instruments included inside their files.

You need to sequence their music note by note first.
