terminologies:
PSD - Photoshop's own format, which supports layers.
Artwork - Pertains to the static graphics of a player ingame. A character select or winner graphics of the player is mostly reffered to as "artwork."
Lifebar - the gague of the player's power and vitality during the fighting proper. Because of MUGEN's flexibility, one person can create unique lifebar graphics patterned from an existing game.

Due to popular demand, I have written this knowledge base on custom lifeboar portraits.

9000,3
This is used for a certain KOF2000 lifebar set. Naturally, sprites using these should have kof2000 style shading, and dimensions should be within 34x40 pixels. Its axis is 0,0.

9000,4
Two screenpacks use these standard. One is from Eternal Fighter Zero, and the other, Tetchi's KOF2k2 Screenpack. If you will allocate this group for efz, you will need to form the sprite cutout,as it follows a given contour. Axis for efz portrait is 0,0. If you will use this for KOF2002, your sprite should be within 36x45 or 46 pixels, with the axis within the lowest point (46.)

NEW9000,5
Kurizu and Sword Dancer's KOFXI Lifebar Portraits uses this group. The axis should be 0,1. For producing portraits for this standard, see 9000,11.

NEW9000,6
This one is used Sword Dancer's KOFXI Lifebar Portraits for the miniature version, for Simul and Turns. Axis is the same, and the portrait should be scaled down.

9000,10
Again, two screenpacks use these standard. A certain KOF2002 screenpack by OrochiKOF97 uses this slot. The other is a Melty Blood Re-Act lifebar. The KOF2k2 spec is the same as the previously mentioned, while the MBR portrait needs a special PSD mold to produce it. Also, if the graphics scale of the portrait is not vga size (MVS, CPS2/3), it is adviced that you scale and remap the colors. Axis for MBR portrait is 0,0.

NEW9000,11
Vans' KOFXI Lifebars uses this standard. The axis should be -1,0. It also requires a special mold to produce custom portraits. Vans has a PSD mold available for download. Portraits made from such mold is compatible with Kurizu, Sword Dancer, and any future KOFXI Lifebars.

Visit the link below for the PSD mold. For general KOFXI-styled portraits that people can use, visit http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?topic=42394

9000,19
This one is unshared, and is used by yet another KOF2002 lifebar pack. Juke Kisaragi mostly uses this standard, as seen in his characters, namely Miyako and White Len. The axis setting is the same, only that the Y axis is at 41, instead of 46. There may be others who could be using this standard as well.

9000,20
This standard is used by lifebars from the game Touhou Suimusou: Immaterial and Missing Power. This portrait standard also needs a special PSD mold to create such portraits. It has a predefined contour in compliance with the original, and utilizes doubleres=4. Axis placement is at 0,0, but there is blank space above, as per compliance to the original specs.

9000,666
While it may sound a little dark, this group is used by Sophie's CVS2 lifebar portraits. The shape is confined to a diagonal box, and requires a model mold. The color usage for this portrait is individual, but it can also use shared colors. To maintain the style consistency, it is recommended to use character artwork for portraits. axis for this portait standard is 10,10. Models and other portraits (and portrait packs) are available from the producer of this standard, at http://cvsfanclub.free.fr/10%20Mugen%20News.htm

9000,9000
This portrait standard is used by the original Melty Blood lifebar. Its axis placement is 0,0, and image dimensions should be strictly 65x12. The picture should focus on the character's eyes, and should be part of the shared pallete.

9000,111
Found in the sprite file of a certain author of Ikumi Amasawa, this is like the normal MUGEN portrait, only 30x30 pixels. Axis is at 0,0.

10000,222
This is used by a customized Melty Blood lifebar. Same as the previously mentioned Melty Blood lifebar, axis is at 0,0, picture should focus on character's eye view, but the dimensions is bigger; 101x33 pixels.

Hm. Does your lifebar have an default yellow square in the lifebar? The yellow box is not shared-color friendly.

Also, some of your portrait packs have too many pixel artifacts, esp. Orochi's.

9000, 222 is used in Muta's King of Fighters Black Wold screenpack. It uses kof2k1 style fight portraits.

Capcom vs Snk Slash screenpack portrait: 10513,0

(I know, weird number, no "9000,xx" but so far I never got a problem with this number, and I never found a char who uses the sprite 10513,0 :P

Any chance of getting a sample image for all of these standards or a screenshot of the implementation.

"the picture should focus on the character's eyes," is kinda ambiguous.
i think we should call it an "engine" so we don't look like total idiots because otherwise we'd be arguing about a "game" and that would be somehow "dumber" than arguing about an "engine" on the "internet" for countless hours

This is a very useful topic, but screenshots would be preferred, and the mold underneath each type.

Hope this sparks some life into this...

It would; It would also be ideal to get a similar thread into the Mugen Archive on justnopoint.com and for these sprites to be on KFM.
