Q: What's the point with the sheets?
A: This is a spriters encyclopedia. First, it shows the most accurate base of a char in different styles, and second, it showcases the works of the fan spriters and their galleries, crediting them. This is to inspire spriters to create strikers/full chars/mockups, or to inspire someone to help to complete this encyclopedia.
Q: Which chars are in the sheets?
A: CAPCOM & SNK characters in their stand pose.
Q: What is the order of the sheets?
A: -CvS: CAPCOM characters that officially appeared in "SNK vs Capcom Chaos"
-SvC: SNK characters that officially appeared in "Capcom vs SNK" 1 & 2
(CAPCOM side)
-SF: Street Fighter series characters
-CAP: CAPCOM Modern & Futuristic themed games.
-MST: CAPCOM's Monsters & Medieval themed games.
(SNK side)
-AOFF: Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Garou Mark of the Wolves series characters
-KOF: King of Fighters series characters
-SNK: SNK characters from another series
Q: What does the color of the stars mean?
A: It credits the author.
-Gray: Unknown/not sure if it is the author; also it is the default color for the first two sheets (CvS & SvC).
-Yellow: The gallery of the author is NOT IN the credits.
-Red: The gallery of the author is IN the credits.
-Blue: for eFeX, he inspired this encyclopedia and he is the one with most edits here.
-White: for Chamat, who created this encyclopedia.
Q: Can I have another color with my name?
A: Not all the spriters, the spriters that are interested and do new good sprites to complete the sheets can ask for another color (except Grays-Whites, Yellows, Oranges & Blues), and their gallery will go first than the others in the credits; this is to promote more edits; there are sprites that can be upgraded or chars that don't appear on the sheets. (12 new sprites to be able to choose color)
Q: Can my name be first in the credits?
A: Same answer as above, if you show interest to this project your name will be shown above in the credits. (12 new sprites to be able to be first)
Q: How are the spriters' galleries classified in the credits?
A: -Chamat (compiler);
-eFeX (most sprites);
-[*new helper spriter(s)];
-Spriters' galleries (if they have, in alphabetical order).
Q: Which styles do you show those chars in?
A: NeoGeoPocket, SvC/KoF, CvS and an EX one.
Q: Why those styles?
A: -NeoGeoPocket: It is the official SNK chibi style where the chars of CAPCOM & SNK clashed.
-SvC: It is the official SNK style where the chars of CAPCOM & SNK clashed.
-CvS: It is the official CAPCOM style where the chars of CAPCOM & SNK clashed.
-EX: It is a second style where a company can make games between their own chars.
Q: What's the "EX" style?
A: "The 2nd popular and desired styles", different from SvC or CvS.
-For CAPCOM: CPS2 and CPS3 styles.
-For SNK: "SS Style" (Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, Art of Fighting 3, Real Bout Fatal Fury & Garou: Mark of the Wolves styles).
Q: Do you plan to include another style like Pocket Fighters?
A: No, it is not the official CAPCOM chibi style where the chars of CAPCOM & SNK clashed. ("But eFeX did some of the best edits in this style.")
Q: Do you plan to include another style like 8 bit Megaman?
A: No, same answer as above.
Q: Do you plan to include another style like "Oldschool" style?
A: Not at the moment, the problem with the Oldschool style is that it is not that popular among the spriters and it lacks of edits. But if it is added, the Super NES & Genesis consoles sprites versions are a good option.
Q: Do you plan to include another style like KoF XII?
A: No, this style is too big and it would affect the visual balance of the sheets.
Q: Do you plan to include another company like NAMCO?
A: Probably not, because their sprite style is the NxC and the SNK chars aren't officially in that style, also because NAMCO's chars aren't officially in CvS nor SvC styles.
Q: Do you plan to include another company like MARVEL?
A: Probably not, because their official 2d sprite style here is CAPCOM's CPS2 style, but they don't appear officially in any SNK style.
Q: Do you plan to include another company that has created 3d fighting games like Tekken, Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur... or from animes like Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya, Pokemon...?
A: Probably not, including the answers of the questions above, there are a lot of companies so selecting which ones would be difficult. But it could be, to add some extra sheets in the future, it depends on the fans and how many new edits they do, they even can create a new style that could be accepted as the "EX" one.
Q: Do you plan to include more characters in the sheets?
A: Obviously, from CAPCOM & SNK.
Q: Why are some chars of CAPCOM or SNK not included?
A: Because they lack sprites in more than one style. Or they are not in 2d sprites yet, or the sprites that exist don't have a good quality.
Q: Why are the NeoGeoPocket sprites not credited in the sheets?
A: Because it would be a visual mess, plus the sprite is used here as the "icon" of the char. But the spriters of the edits are in the credits.
Q: So, how many styles can a char be in, in this encyclopedia?
A: Four(4): in (1)NeoGeoPocket, (2)SvC, (3)CvS and the (4)EX style. To be published, a char needs at least two styles different to the NeoGeoPocket, (because these are done exclusively for the sheets if these don't exist, so you shouldn't worry about those).
Q: Which software can I open and copy the sprites of the sheets with?
A: With any image edition software, it is recommendable to use a professional software because if you open them with paint some random blocks may appear, it's better that you take screenshots of the sheets.
Q: I don't like some sprites that are in the sheets, can you revamp them?
A: Even if some sprites can be better, these have an average quality to be shown here. "I just edit the ones that need a great fix."
Q: If I request you to do a specific char that I want to be in the encyclopedia, would you do it?
A: "No, except if I do like the char and there are already sprites of him/her in other styles. And if you help me to gather bases and references to do it."
Q: If I do new sprites, can I replace another fan spriter's work?
A: Yes, if yours has more accuracy, this is how the encyclopedia works. Some edits that are included in the sheets can be replaced.
Q: Can I post sprites here?
A: If you find some sprites that have the chance to be here, yes you can. But please check if there is not already a version of the sprite of the char in the style you want to post first.
Q: Can I post MY OWN sprites here?
A: It is preferable that you post it in the graphic section. But it could be just if nobody has done the char sprite in your style, this is to avoid rudeness.
Q: So, does it mean that you will add the known spriters?
A: A spriter that is popular just for being popular won't be added to the credits if he/she doesn't have at least an edit in the encyclopedia.
Q: How can we help to complete the encyclopedia?
A: Doing sprites of not shown chars. Helping to credit an unaccredited author plus giving a link to the gallery if it is not in (the ones with yellow stars).
Q: Who is Chamat to judge if a sprite edit can be in this encyclopedia?
A: "I'm an average spriter and I can copy most of the styles using references, I have tried the most popular with good results. I have some knowledge about different sprite styles and what is aesthetic and what is not, also I'm studying graphic design so I believe that people can trust in my choices."
Q: If two or more spriters do their version of a char, how do you decide whether to select one or another?
A: Overall quality and style accuracy:
-Scale
-Anatomy proportion (sizes of the body parts)
-Colors quantity
-Palette colors
-General shading
-If the pose is the stand pose (preferably)
-Outfit
-Originality (more than a mere edition)
-Effectiviness (not more complicated than the style itself)
-If it is a Mugen created char with gameplay accuracy (optional)
Q: I have seen some sprites that look really good, why didn't you add them?
A: There are some sprites that couldn't be included in the sheets even if they look better than the actual ones, all because these don't follow the sprite style or the char design parameters.
Q: Do you pretend to show just edited sprites from the fans?
A: No, mainly the official (from CAPCOM/SNK) sprite is chosen instead of an edited (from a fan) one, but if the edit is in a most desired style (e.g: CPS3 instead of CPS2, for the SF sheet), it has another clothing (except Midnight Bliss or casual/neutral) or it's in another stand pose, all according to the char, it can be selected.
Q: Why am I credited for a sprite that I didn't do?
A: This is because one of your sprites was converted to another style, this is to have more spriters in the credits and this helped to complete the sheets faster. "I just take the credit when the sprite I edit doesn't look like yours anymore."
Q: There is a different version of my sprite, why is that?
A: Some sprites get touched up to make them more accurate to a style.
Q: I did different versions of a sprite, which one did you select?
A: Even if you may think that the last version is the best one, some of your old edits have more accuracy to a style and/or these are less complicated.
Q: When a fan spriter has more than one gallery, also more than one nickname, which one do you select?
A: Just one of the galleries of the fan spriter is shown, the most active, under the most popular nickname. But real galleries like DA and not a forum gallery. The problem with a forum gallery is that you have to browse all the pages to be able to see the sprites. "Believe me, I had to browse a lot of pages from a lot of forums in order to gather some sprites. All the spriters should let all their works in the first page of the thread, it brings more order. I always do that."
Q: I don't want my sprites to be in the encyclopedia. Can you delete them?
A: No, there were some edits that were asked for permission, but as a polite act, because what is needed is just to credit the author and all the sprites are credited here. It would be a shame to not have your work here, you were selected because you did a good sprite. No one is going to steal your credit, "I know how much time a sprite can take". Also you must remember that you don't own the char designs from CAPCOM or SNK. "...Or simply don't upload your sprites to the net."
Q: So are the sprites open source?
A: Yes, at this point all the uploaded works are from open source spriters.
Q: Why am I not credited for a character if I created a playable version of it?
A: The purpose of these sheets is to show bases for the chars, and you probably took one done by CAPCOM or SNK. In the case when it was originally done by another fan spriter, but you have your own version edited from his/her, you will receive the credit if your work is much better.
Q: Wow, I like the sprites but who is going to convert them into full playable chars?
A: "Your mother."
Q: I'm really interested in a character, can I do a full playable version of it?
A: CAPCOM & SNK said that they won't sue fan based works of their characters. In the sheets there are some chars that have already a full playable version or that are works in progress, with the original authors name so you can credit/contact them. Generally you have to commission someone in order to have the char you want, also you can do it by yourself, you can try to convince people too, but please don't push them.
Q: If I do my OC (Original Character) in all those styles can he/she/it be in the encyclopedia?
A: No, just CAPCOM & SNK characters.
Q: I like this thread, can I post it in another website?
A: Yes and no, you can create a topic but just with a link to this forum and showing few sheets, but don't upload all the sheets images because these are going to be updated (and erased) from time to time. "I want to keep this site as the official one."
Q: Do you plan to change the encyclopedia's format?
A: Not for now; even if it would be cool to link the galleries under the spriter' work in the sheets, to show every sprite by separate would be needed. Showing them as sheet packages, like now, allows you to see, save and edit a greater bunch of sprites in your computer.
Q: So aren't you going to upload animated stands?
A: Unluckily no.
Q: I don't like the sprites you selected, can I edit the ones from this encyclopedia and do my own sheets?
A: If you aim to do the same exact thing with the chars and styles that are handled here, no. There's no point of doing so with this same format, remember that you can help to complete this encyclopedia. There are websites that do this though. (But you could use this format idea in other chars if you do your own version, e.g: Tekken, Dead Or Alive, Soul Calibur, Sega, Nintendo, Mugen... "Disclaimer: I won't help/support them")
Notes:
-Disclaimer: This encyclopedia shows the most accurate edits according to a personal opinion, that doesn't mean that these are the definitive/final/official ones. So you are free to judge/use by your own will.
-There are just a few sprites that aren't credited, please help to credit them.
-The word "Edit" is mainly used to reference the sprites done by the fans, not to point the process.
-Even if Demitri, Tessa, Zero, Violent Ken & Red Arremer officially appeared in "SNK vs Capcom Chaos", Haohmaru & Hibiki in "Capcom vs SNK 2" they aren't in the CvS and SvC sheets because they clash with the other chars in those sheets.
-Some chars from the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers series are still in CPS2 style due to the lack of edits in CPS3 style, mostly the chars from SF1 & SFEX.
-Cammy & the Dolls are still in CPS2 style due to lots of edits from the fans, but none of them are that serious like a project/char ("I have my own version too"), also because you have to do the stand sprite in CPS3 style to all of them(Delta Red, Killer Bee, Juni & Juli).
-Sakura, Karin, Ingrid, Shun & Mel are in the "CAP" sheet as Rival Schools' characters.
-Metal Slug chars are not in CvS style due to lack of edits.
-The "EX" sprite style selected for the "CAP" sheet is CPS2 style.
-The "EX" sprite style selected for the Metal Slug and the Ikari Warriors characters is "Metal Slug" style.
