Hey everyone, progress has been a bit slower over the last two months because I've been pinballing between a few projects and I am moving. Trying to nail down the look for the select and versus screens has been challenging and I've been through a few designs that I've scrapped, but I kept coming back to certain central themes that have persisted since the start. I decided to bring the project back closer to its brokenMUGEN roots but also evolving the look I have developed with the lifebars. You'll notice in this video that I'm also showing how brokenIKEMEN will display the Ratio team mode.

The sound effects aren't finalized, as a matter of fact many are missing, but I wanted to show the progress to date. I reused the Versus screen music from brokenMUGEN but I might change it... I just thought it fit well there. Let me know what you think!

Also, taking the time to answer a few of the common questions I've been receiving:
  • The shown select screen is 4x9x2, so 72 slots. I also created a 23x10x2 select screen (460 slots). I will probably create a few more permutations of the select screen, particularly when Gacel finishes up some of the select screen improvements that have been discussed on the Discord.
  • While brokenIKEMEN was designed for 1280x720, it will also ship with a 1280x960 .def for the 4:3 people.
  • Trials Mode is part of IKEMEN engine modifications I've been working on, but brokenIKEMEN will come with a trials mode theme.

Here's another clip of the trials mode, testing out characters and longer trials. I'll have to implement a scrolling mode for really long trials.

I was asked on the Ikemen GO discord if horizontal trial layouts will be possible, like KOF XIII. The answer is yes, up to the screenpack author to make that work but all the hooks are in.

Hey guys! I took a very short break from designing brokenIKEMEN but in exchange I've been diving into the Ikemen GO engine and getting acquainted with both the GoLang and Lua pieces. I've created a universal trials mode that requires a single, simply formatted file that enables trials mode for that character - I think character creators will love this. My implementation leverages Ikemen GO's glyphs support and provides full graphical customizability, and in the Lua easily allows game creators to modify any piece of the mode itself if they so desire. Pretty excited about this! A bit more testing is required but I'm hopeful, and confident this will be integrated into the Ikemen GO master once my testing is complete. Thanks to Kamekaze for sharing his initial implementation with me! And now, back to designing brokenIKEMEN...

Here's a video to whet your appetite, I haven't finished developing all the graphic assets but I figured I should send out an update!

Hey everybody, it's been quite a while!

Some of you will remember my last public project (https://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/two4teezees-wips-brokenmugen-lifebars-redesign-bm1-1-159914.0.html). I abandoned this project due to the lack of features in Mugen 1.1, and while I thought add004 would answer some of my needs, that codebase was fairly new and quite complex at the time. bM1.1 was never released for those reasons. I've recently returned to the scene and I was pleased to find that Ikemen GO would support all of the functionality I wanted to finish my abandoned project, and much more.

Over the holidays I was able to complete the lifebars and contribute some edits to the Ikemen GO code source that enables complex animations at various stages of a round (keen observers will notice several things which are simply impossible to do in Mugen). Here's the first video I've released to showcase this WIP, let me know what you think!

Hey guys, two4teezee here from brokenMUGEN (if any of you remember that!). I'm restarting development on brokenMUGEN and I have a few new projects in mind as well. I've been gone from the scene for a long, long time, so here's a request:

What are your favorite stages and characters for Mugen 1.0+ in recent memory? Drop a link in the thread. Prefer characters that are not OP, I prefer more balanced rosters, open to all games and genres. Thanks... and look for my WIP updates in the projects section soon =D

One round, they could appear in order. Another could have them coming in from a different direction, like left or right. Subtleties like this make for more interesting and exciting details.

I'd love to do that, BUT it will only be possible with the add004 version without making the file size too big. The standard version would balloon to unmanageable file sizes.

Wow! Almost nobody ever uses add004.

With good reason. It is an extremely complicated, convoluted piece of code and while it's open source, modifying it not trivial. The CVS3 bars are using it, I'll be using it... That's about it.

I've been really quiet on here lately - packing up the house as we are moving... but I've been tinkering with Tatsu's add004 to put in extra features (similar to the CVS3 lifebars). Stay tuned for progress on that.

So far so good but it is a lot of work and there are a lot of things that need to be reworked. I'm also trying to figure out the best way to integrate a guard bar into the lifebars. All in all though, the add004 open source code will allow me to truncate the filesize by quite a bit, by being able to create layers for animations that otherwise wouldn't be layered. I may still release a non-add004 version that will be quite heavy in terms of filesize/RAM demand.

Other than that, it's been pretty quiet. I fixed the combo counter in about 10 seconds, here's a picture =P

Tatsu, I noticed something. Fido's "_mx" chars become broken by the patcher. The groove select no longer works. Tukemon's Garou chars also become broken.

ianb3000 managed to find a workaround by using an old patcher first, then the new one.

Could you possibly release a new patcher that works properly with Fido's characters (for example).

So I've been messing with add004 myself and I think the only unfortunate thing about using it to make lifebars is that depending on what kind of features you include (i.e. tag system, guard break, dizzy, etc.) it's bound to break some of your favorite chars unless you edit by hand. For example, all of the "_mx" chars by Fido become broken by these features... it's really too bad.

My mind is blown. Thanks for sharing this with us... I perused the 13,000-line (!!!) common1.cns to get a basic understanding of what you're doing here. It reminds me a lot of what Kamek and Messatsu had shared with me for brokenMugen... but this is next level. I'll try to incorporate some of this stuff in my development of brokenMugen v1.1. Thanks again!

That spacing on the two digit hits, the 10, 11, 12.. It seems a little off, too wide. Not sure how that can be rectified, if at all. In any case, looks awesome!! The splatter motif in this version in place of the static is just really cool!

Yeah I noticed the spacing too, it's an easy fix. There's a few other things I've noticed just watching over the video that I want to fix... all in due time! Thanks for the feedback.

I know it'd be a ton of work, but I'd love to see that KO screen animated. Looks fantastic

Thanks Big Boss =) I think you'll enjoy this then... Expect a video this week, nearly all of the animations are done for in-game. Lifebars are complete, round, fight, KO animations... just need to finalize the win icons and a few other tidbits, then it's off to the rest of the SP.



I set off thinking this would be bM1.1 and my creativity has just taken me on an almost completely different course, although I'm still using the same beloved font. Top post updated =)

Annnnd another update... this one is pretty significant. Here's a picture of the bars in-game =) All of the coding is done, fine-tuning under way now... finish up the timer font, for example, and finishing touches on other things. Next it will be onto round markers and round animations... Top post updated with some ramblings but this is the gist of it =D

Thanks! I like them too. For the timer part I'm still struggling to find something I'm completely happy with but that's the general direction I'm going in.

Alright, I've been pretty quiet for the past two weeks as I'm working on standing up my website and also preparing for my wedding... but here's what I think is likely a final candidate for the lifebars for brokenMugen v1.1 =) Still playing with some of the gradients and the timer background but you get the idea... top posted updated!

Looks amazing... I'm a big fan. One suggestion: can you make a re-imagined version that requires fewer custom portraits when you're done with this one?
