One of my closest fiends, Stephanie Lauren Cox, the basis for Fray, died last night at 30. I am at a complete loss. She loved the band Saves the Day, which is why all her character's special moves were named after Saves the Day songs.

She was an amazing person. She lit up every room she was in with her infectious personality. She was sunny and dark at the same time. She gave me so much free coffee when she worked at her dad's coffee shop in downtown Burlington. When her dad died, we were there for each other because we'd both lost our fathers to cancer.

Last year I helped her when she was moving out and away from an abusive boyfriend. She made me feel important. She made me feel strong.

Way back, Stephanie criticized the design I went with for her character because she dyed her hair brown for like a year. The brown hair just looked way better for her character design. She was a blonde for most of the time I knew her.

She had a one-of-a-kind perspective on life that can't be matched. Her death is a tragic, pointless loss that I can't figure out how to come back from.

Every time you play as Fray, remember she is based on a real, beautiful, wonderful person that left this world too soon. I've never regretted making her a bad guy more than I do today.

Quick update for anyone still following this project!

I know I go a while without posting stuff here but just to let everyone know, even during these long gaps the game is always being worked on. So here's a progress update:

-Kamekaze has finished his side of the code for all the characters. From a gameplay perspective, the game is done and ready to go
-I'm going to leave Bloodtide as is for now, since these sprites were revealed to me at a point when the game was basically done
-Later on after I put the finished product out I may update Bloodtide with these amazing new sprites. If not they will be used in at least a standalone release of a non-canon Bloodtide
-I've changed The Monolith's name to The Megalith, I saw Diepod has a character for his game called Monolith and I recognize the design as a character he created waaaay before I had the idea to edit my Mr. X into a sub-boss so I changed it out of respect, his Monolith is cooler anyway
-What's being worked on now, all by myself, are the endings and the intro for the game. I've been working on these since the end of December and they are very time consuming, they require hand-drawing, scanning, coloring and coding, plus I suffered a setback when I dislocated a finger on my dominant hand at work which sucked.
-Since I couldn't really draw for about 2 weeks, I spent that time adding a lot of special intros to the game for characters that should have already had them (Fray vs Ruckus for example). The entire list of new special intros is in the spoiler

-I have 14 endings done, with 8 left, and then the game's intro, which is drawn but not scanned, colored or coded yet
-After that the game gets sent to Kamekaze one more time so he can optimize and then it will be out. I'm aiming for February

Wow.

I mean wow, Merry Christmas to me. Those sprites are beautiful. I love the design, the animations. How could I not use these? You basically did all the work for me! Looking at what you have here, all that's left are the rest of her gethits and her intros/taunt/winposes. I'm shocked someone would want to do something like this for one of my characters, spriting is such hard work.

That Byrne anim is super smooth and I love it. Gonna use it, too. Thank you.

Can you send these sprites in individual files to me via PM? I'd like to start implementing them right away. I'll have to redraw her portrait but who cares, worth it. What an awesome thing to wake up to on Christmas, I'm so hype!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. I noticed that there are more downloads of the main file than there are of the sound file, just making sure everyone saw the part about getting them both! Also, there's a fix for some Ruckus bugs coming here in a bit.

Here is the September update for SHADEs of Manhattan 3's Demo version! I wanted to get this out on my birthday but I couldn't get it done before Tuesday, which is when I was supposed to be leaving for a week long beach trip. Unfortunately, after two hours of driving towards Carolina Beach, we were informed that the county had issued a mandatory evacuation for 8AM the next day (Hurricane Dorian) and we wouldn't even be allowed to check in for the night. So we had to turn around and drive home (now we're waiting on a refund from our traveler's insurance). However, it gave me time to finish this up and get it out!

This version includes:

-5 additional characters, including the returning Bloodtide, Chad In Black, and Ruckus, along with the new character After Image (who has been released as a standalone character) and Elle, who has never been released before so this is your first chance to play as her (voice by Emma Elizabeth of VAC)
-1 New stage, Winter Airport (credit to Ryoucchi & The Magic Toaster), acting as Elle's stage
-Unique winquotes have been implemented for every single character
-Added win icons, something I left out of SHADEs 2 for some reason
-Some changed and additional music by CVSNB

Sorry for the lack of updates folks, been going through some stuff and also been setting up a new computer and it takes a bit to get used to. Moses' sprites are almost done, just have to finish two animations for his super moves, his run, and his intros/win poses.

Kamekaze has finished coding the AI for Ruckus and Elle, and both will be part of the next update, which will also see the addition of Chad In Black, Bloodtide and Afterimage. Once Moses' sprites are done, I will focus on things like intros and endings for the characters while Kamekaze finishes the AI code for the remainder of the returning cast, which is what we need for a full release.

After that, any additional characters will be considered "DLC," and the game should receive regular patches for bug fixes thanks to Kamekaze. I will update this post later today with more screenshots of Moses.

I'm curious to know your spriting method.
It looks way more polished than in the past.

We still can see the poses references, but I wonder how you work on it.
Do you stream your work?

Thanks man, so here is a .gif of the my general process ( doubled in size for visibility purposes):



Here's the explanation frame by frame:

1. So I apply a black silhouette palette to the base sprites (Yamazaki in this case). Also Moses isn't quite as tall as Yamazaki so I vertically scale the sprite 94%
2. Fill with a bright color to help me see better (yeah I could just make the silhouette this color to start but for some reason I never have and I use the same "sill.act" I first made in like 2008). Not always white, usually lime green
3. If I'm copying parts from a base I do it now, which I don't always do, but in the case I'm copying Yamazaki's shoes because it saves me a surprising amount of time to do this. Elle for example however has no copied parts and is 100% my pixels, and AfterImage uses some copied over Shen Woo hands. Also in this case I had a head sprite that fit this pose already so I copied it over.
4. Then I do the outlines
5. Fill in with dark colors
6. Then the middle/anti-alias color linework
7. Last I fill with the brightest color and fix any details or shading issues I see

So as you can see even though I've used Yamazaki as an animation base, 95% of the sprite is still drawn by me in MS paint. I would make my own animations but I've never been good at it. I'm aware this is essentially tracing, but I'm fine with that honestly and I still have a lot of fun putting these characters together.

So a long while back I decided that Moses needed new sprites very badly. While I was able to simply update Zenith and Vesper's sprites and add a few new animations, I found Moses still needed completely new ones. So here's a preview of those sprites a long with the planned updated movelist.









THROWS

-Downsized - HP+HK/C - A simple chokeslam
-Layoff - B+HP+HK/C - Pulls his opponent to one side and hits a big boot
-Market Crash - HP+HK/C in midair - A midair chokeslam, making him one of the only characters in the game with an air throw

COMMAND NORMALS

-Deal Breaker - F+HK - A stiff big-boot style attack that is slow but does good damage and causes wall bounce.

SPECIAL MOVES

-Insider Trading - QCF+P - His Geese-style counters, LP counters low attacks and HP counters high. No counter for air attacks since he has a reliable anti-air grab. EX Version is a Cross Counter type move that counters everything, has almost no start-up and does big damage, but takes away some life if it connects.

-Glass Ceiling - DP+P - An anti-air grab with good range. EX version has the speed of the LP version, the range of the HP version, and invul frames like a typical anti-air.

-Ground Floor Shake-Up - QCF+K - Creates an earthquake-style shockwave with a powerful single-leg stomp. LK has short range but pops them up for juggles or grabs, HK has wide-range but does moderate damage and hard knockdown. EX version has quick start-up, does good damage and also pops up.

-Hostile Takeover - HCB+K - Command grab where he headbutts the opponent, then either flings them against the wall for a wall-bounce and follow-ups (LK), or slams them outright for guaranteed damage (HK). EX version does three headbutts and leaves the opponent stunned in front of him for an easy combo.

-Tax Evasion - QCB+P - Moses does a quick rotating back-step before delivering a forward-traveling swinging punch. EX Version is very fast, has invul frames, does low damage but also ends with a launcher that can be followed-up with a juggle or Glass Ceiling

SUPER MOVES

L1 - Hyperinflation - QCFx2+P - Maddigan uses his main attacking arm instead of his foot to strike the ground, creating a big burst of energy directly in front of him.

L2 - Black Monday - QCFx2+HK - Maddigan uses his stronger, dominant right hand to deliver a devastating mid-range, single-hit stiff punch. If you hold HK down, he will run towards his opponent, unleashing the punch when he's close or if you release the button.

L2 - Black Tuesday - QCFx2+LK - A counter version of Black Monday that does more damage in exchange for more strict hit requirements.

DM - Ill-Gotten Gains - QCBx2+S - A grab with incredible range that results in several headbutts. He then taunts his opponent while still holding them, slams them to the ground, and absolutely destroys them with alternating grounded punches. He finishes them off with a version of Hyperinflation using his right arm, resulting in huge damage.

Yeah her hands were always color separated and once I decided on an intro where she's riding a Ducati I figured gloves would look cool. I matched them with her boots.

I added a new special to the first post and adjusted some move descriptions and commands. She's pretty much done, just one more win pose to sprite and waiting on a voice actor (using VAC again, already had a couple of auditions, also going to replace Castle's voice finally). Can't wait to share this character with everyone!

Her audio is unfinished so she has some default Ryu voice (it's part of the template I use). I need a voice actor for her soon, she is pretty much finished. This is just a general showcase of her moveset and other stuff. The computer I'm doing stuff on right now is old so it lags pretty bad while recording, which messes with my inputs sometimes. Ignore these damage values, they're using the old damage dampener which has been replaced by Kamekaze. Also, I realized after uploading that her motorcycle intro sprites aren't layering correctly, whoops. Hope you enjoy!
