Re: My Rant on The Fighters Generation

What no Power Rangers or Them's Fighting Herds too you are such a fighting fanatic flimflamming fraud a pox on you!

The Fighters Generation was created solely for fighting games: those titles which helped to create or shape the genre in an impactful way. While I do appreciate his efforts into bringing light all the games that exist, he has a "no-celebrity-policy" that kind of puts me off. The Def Jam fighting games and Celebrity Deathmatch, I get it wholeheartedly - even I think having big names like Marilyn Manson on the site feels out of place.

But then we get to Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid, Them Fightin' Herds, Sailor Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, Pokken Tournament, Super Smash Bros. The common trait: they're all video games that seem catered to children, did not start out as a fighting game, or encompasses too many other genres to make it look more than just a fighting game. Regarding Smash, the webmaster did acknowledge the fact of the latter, citing that Ryu, Ken, Megaman and Terry making the roster is quite an honor, especially since 3rd party invites would not begin until Brawl. My main concern is that the existing entrants make the website feel elitist, like an inner circle. He would have to be blown away with an interest he can not refuse such as a highly original and interesting character who feels like they belong in a fighting game, an innovative way of fighting that impacts the genre, or something that rivals his current favorites.

I have nothing against his site. His games directory has helped me quite a bit with my fan game, bringing me to titles I've never heard of and characters to review for move lists, behavior and strategy, and it's been around for 20 years. If I ever get a chance to interview him (provided I overcome my slurred speech problems), I would like to ask him more about his views on fighting games in general.

I could help you with a blueprint on the final boss, if you want. What this basically means is I conceptualize possible moves for your original character based on their background and the overall game engine. I will send you an example of a blueprint via PM.

For Focused Heart, since you plan on "one that grants Armor". I might suggest an "Armor Mode" similar to what's in KOF 2000 where you have limited Super Armor.

That one could be called a Heavy Heart.

Speaking of fun names, you might want to seize the phrase Broken Heart. That could either be a mechanic of its own for counter attacks, or it could describe an effect from which a player cancels out or temporarily suspends the opponent's ability to use their heart powers for a short time.

...I'm actually sick of seeing (Morrigan) in crossovers with the same moves and supers and literally nothing new going on with every iteration.

I love Morrigan, I really do. But I get what you're saying.

One of the major complaints I've seen was Morrigan's design was just too perfect, Capcom wouldn't dare to touch her. Her CPS2 sprite library has been recycled time and time again - in fact, for the Capcom vs. SNK series, they simply reused her CPS2 library, whereas the rest of the roster was specifically redesigned to conform to CVS specifications.

Same moves and supers, that I can agree on. When Capcom brought her in for Marvel vs. Capcom, they replaced her Finishing Shower with Soul Eraser (a beam super to make her "a part of the crowd"), and added a new Level 3 super, Eternal Slumber. In the second installment, Eternal Slumber was cut. In MVC3, her Finishing Shower was brought back; and due to Lilith not being in the series her Silhouette Blade was changed to Shadow Servant; and Darkness Illusion became a Level 3 super. It was not until Infinite where she finally had a new special move, Harmonious Spear, a move which I have mixed feelings with. I must have tried several different moves and ideas so that Morrigan would appear fresh: making Necro Desire a special move that could even be used in mid-air, turning Shell Kick into a Cannon Drill without turning Morrigan into Cammy, making better use of her Harmonious Spear... and nothing. I looked at other fighting video games like Omen Of Sorrow, even non-fighting ones like Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night where one of the bosses is a succubus. Capcom made her too perfect, from her moveset to her design, and that's the problem here. The more I tried to update Morrigan, the less she was Morrigan, if you know what I mean.

Are there other characters you want to feature outside of the usual Capcom suspects; maybe from Red Earth, Megaman, Battle Circuit, Power Stone, or even unlikely characters like Princess Prin Prin from Ghost N' Goblins?

With regards to the fourth button, you have to ask yourself, what is the penultimate premise of the game. If your game features tagging, you can designate that as the tag button. If the game is more beginner-friendly (ie. Super Smash Bros. controls), the fourth button could be for special moves.

Another idea would be to treat the fourth button as a literal wild card. After selecting your fighter, the player will choose an ISM, and that ISM's fourth button will be the ability. For example, if you choose an ISM that lets you perform a Super Combo, that fourth button will now be used for performing Super Combos. An ISM for defense, speed, activating special abilities, healing. Again, it all depends on how you want Capcom Heroines to work.

What about combos? Since you want to avoid the MvC-styled aerial raves, might I suggest The King Of Fighters method: Regular Attack > Command Attack > Special Move. Power Stone has a Punch-Kick pyramid tree system where you could make your own 4-hit combos with just those two buttons.

I've sent you a PM.

I woke up this morning to the news that Mai Shiranui won't appear in Smash at all, not even a spirit. While I am disappointed, I cannot blame the staff for doing the right thing: Smash is for all ages, and Mai's sexuality is very distracting. It could have been a major issue for ESPN/Disney, since I do recall some of their tournaments getting aired on television sometimes - and supposedly I'll have to throw in Nickelodeon as another network that airs Smash in some capacity.

It's just gonna be really weird where, when you read into the list of spirits, every SNK character will be represented except for Mai. At least I can take solace in that she is on Nintendo via SNK Heroines. It's just mixed feelings for me.

A couple other franchises that crossed my mind are Double Dragon and Bubble Bobble.

And Macaulyn, good call on Lara Croft - totally forgot about her.

Smash is staying true to its "Everyone's here" slogan. SNK was never listed as one of the companies initially.

Spoiler: Character confusion (click to see content)

We have to make a list of video game companies that yet to appear in Smash, not necessarily the titles. For example, Mortal Kombat was once by Midway, but after their bankruptcy, the franchise and its IPs were bought out and now owned by NetherRealm Studios, a division of Warner Bros. If they make it, Warner will be the first ever non-video game company to be in the copyrights listing for Smash.

Killer Instinct is by Rare; I think they get in because of their ties to Nintendo.

We haven't officially seen a Tekken rep, despite a Heihachi Mii costume.

Spoiler: Another rumored entry (click to see content)

Any other companies I'm missing?

Have you done CPS2-style sprites before, like the ones in Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers and Marvel vs. Capcom series?

Were there ever plans to implement the Duo Team Attack, where you control two fighters at the same time? Example below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utYWKUcmPQE

This element was the very thing that got me into Marvel vs. Capcom back in 1999 (and what led me to my fan game). If that were available, I'd absolutely play this.

So then, will characters who have less than three Hyper Combos like Iceman and Colossus receive two more Hyper Combos to accommodate this or will they use the same Hyper Combo for every assist type?

They are not confirmed 100% that will be in the game (Although I said that I would like to put all the characters that I have made from MvC2).

Answering your question, if they were in the game... I do not consider it obligatory to add more hyper to accommodate this, but it seems like a good idea.

Keep in mind, at least one character has more than the standard two, and that's Silver Samurai (The MvC Wiki lists seven as of his last appearance in MvC2). Some heroes have Level 3 Hyper Combos. Starting in either 3 or in Infinite, every character had a mandatory Level 3. If new Hyper Combos were to be created for Extreme, and one of them would have to be designated as a Level 3, this can get complicated.

At my behest, having at least three Hyper Combos in total would serve just fine. That way, when you designate a Level 3 if necessary, you would still have two Level 1 Hypers.

Rouge is probably, I never saw a very good Fou-lu, Squirrel Girl or Moondragon in Mugen, with excellent sprites.
I will commissioning artists for sprites if I consider necessary, I´d love to see a Thor with the MvC sprites and MvC3 moves.

If you do decide to commission for any of those four, I'd like to know if I could help out. I plan to use those same four characters for my own fan game. I'm very good at researching characters movesets and deciding which ones would fit best. I also know an artist who might take on these characters; in fact, I'm still searching for CPS2 artists since the pool for this particular style is dying out.

I'd imagine the Fou-Lu no1wammy is talking about is the one UN made.

Here's a video of Fou-Lu's movesets, captured by Rahgby from YouTube:

I would love to see how the Alpha/Beta/Gamma assist thing works out. I have a variation of this for my fan game where, if you do a Duo/Trio Team Attack and perform any assist attack, your entire team will perform a special move that is closest to it. For example, if Akuma does a Goshoryuken, the Dragon Punch, then the rest of your team does something similar.

When is your next beta test?

Is this going to extend to DLCs? Because if yes, then the fighting game community is gonna be hit. Hard. So hard, it'll force publishers to not release any game with planned late additions, like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Dead Or Alive, The King Of Fighters and Super Smash Bros.

A bit of an update on this Anti Loot Box Bill:

The only exclusions currently listed:
- Difficultly Modes
- Cosmetic Items
- Downloadable Expansions

So this could affect more than Loot Boxes:
- Games that sell Characters as DLC
- Any XP Boosts
- Any weapons or perks, etc

Games such as Mortal Kombat 11, Dragonball FighterZ, etc. would potentially have to change how they do DLC or just not at all under this new bill if it isn’t changed. Right now additional fighters not included in the base game could be viewed as an ‘advantage’ and be considered illegal.
