This is probably the actual bottom of the list curiosity for the Diamond/Pearl remakes, but I wonder if Hidden Power will come back now?  The move concept was fine, just freaking make it more accessible to understand for more casual players to make use of.  So unnecessarily cryptic about it, having to even guess which type it's set to if you don't have it memorized by heart.

Took a day of mulling it over, but it just occurred to me what the 3D chibi art direction is reminding me of.

Ah, if only the Pokemon games were remotely in the realm of Final Fantasy spin-off knock-offs of Pokemon.  Though at least they don't have the same terrible voice acting issues.  Yet.  Between SwSh's awkward soundless vocal tracks and BotW's overall "meh" turnout with their mutes turned chatterboxes, not sure how I'd feel if the remakes added in voices finally as well.

Though if any Nintendo franchise should make the smoothest transition, it should be the one with a decades long established anime series with veteran voice actors.  As someone who hasn't seen the anime since I guess when they got rid of Brock and Misty, I would think it rather cool to have a consistent use of voice actors from the anime to rep their game version.

Also
the art direction is honestly pretty garbage. dont get why people are praising the backgrounds

That seems a little unfair.  The former is attempting to recreate the original specifically with the intent of faithfulness, also picking an intentionally barren room, the latter is updating an considerably older game to modern standards and is being more liberal with their changes to spice it up.  Frankly, wasn't a fan of the Switch remake of Link's Awakening's new looks and skipped out on it because of it.

As is a crucial issue with all of the Pokemon games since X and Y, a large part of it comes down to the downright lifeless animations.  When you have something chibi, you expect it to be bouncing and lively and all over the place, making use of the cutesy style of animation.  As is, and likely will be in the game, they just look like miniature toys moving rigidly across a game board.  Like kid's anime Warhammer.

I don't expect it to be truly resolved by release but I also don't expect it to be a focal point of the game anyways.  Attention seems to be more placed in the backgrounds, which after SwSh's trees, is a good enough start I suppose.

Yo.  As someone heavily critical of Game Freak's deception and turnout, chill.  The previous remakes have been good, this is literally the announcement of this one's existence and art direction.  Wait until more information before writing it off.

So I heard that ILCA is making this remake, not The Pokemon Company.  Odd.  Well, they made Pokemon Home, so I guess expect more streamlined integration with that app.  I also hear ILCA also did a bunch of work for Metal Gear Rising Revengence and Nier: Automata.

Looking forward to the secret postgame chapter with the silver-haired sword user cutting down skyscrapper-sized robots while in questionable attire.  Or in this case I guess going mano e mano against Arceus.  Not entirely sure how sarcastic and joking I am, now that I write it out.  Now I want us to rebel against the game's fated credits and fight for the real meme ending.

Edit: The lore holding dynamax just to Galar is, like, the first thing I can wholeheartedly expect them to throw out the window where there's profit to be made.  Especially as it's lore can be boiled down to "Space rock radiation landed here by chance", that can be handwaved to literally the entire planet.  Hell, it can be chained to tie in Mega Rayquaza's lore being essentially the same if they so cared.

The other remakes were before SwSh.  A lot of assumptions over quality control and general direction were tossed out the window with the changes it brought.  The hopeful wish would be yes, you play Diamond/Pearl to play Diamond/Pearl, you get their pokedex for the main content and then you get the postgame national dex covering the rest.  Trade in others early if you need that non-native Fire-type, but don't get a lore entry on them before beating the game.  Less fun, more compromise, you get Sun and Moon's deal of not writing up new info on all thousand-so of the Pokemon and they don't get dex entries but you can still use them.  Though we never got a straight answer out of Game Freak, I believe the notion we're still holding on to for SwSh's missing monsters is the time constraint when porting the models to Switch and not all of them worked as intended.  Why they gave the excuses they did, who knows, you'd have the ask them in person I suppose.  But now, having significant time since SwSh's DLC, I would hope this is no longer an issue and we can get the last missing bunch squared away.

Something else occurs to me.  Not nearly to the extent Zelda puts a focus on theirs, but Pokemon has branching timelines they kinda just leave as a point of interest in the background.  Three as I recall?  Haven't needed to think of them in a while.  You have the "main" one, following each main title of each gen besides where a third entry overwrites it like Emerald to Ruby/Sapphire.  You have the Mega timeline, which I think only covers ORAS's weird time placement of having Mega Stones present in Honen.  And you have Let's Go's timeline, which personally is by far the weirdest because Let's Go wants to be both 1996 and 2018 at the same time, retelling Yellow's story whilst Red/Blue had already happened and the events are happening all over again with nearly clones of Red and not-Green/Leaf but genderswapt Red.  But they also have Leaf appear in the game, as she did as Green prior to FireRed/LeafGreen.  And they reference the manga, which is wholly separate from the games.  The Let's Go games were freaking weird when you think of them more than the developers probably did.

Anyways, I'm just curious if this will attempt the same deal to bring dynamax to Sinnoh?  Or hell, Megas to return to the Mega timeline, that'd be somewhat interesting to refer to ORAS events again.

The Diamond/Pearl remake share a lot more in common stylistically with Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee than Sword/Shield.  Interesting.  There's pluses and minuses to that, the more compact world of Let's Go allowed much more detail to shine through its towns than SwSh's mostly surface-level looks and barren cities beyond the one major copypaste steampunk city and its copy.  To say nothing of the actual content within them of course, but SwSh's cons are long and illustrious and long-since well documented so moving on.

One of SwSh's pros over Let's Go and at first glance here is this shading thing they got going on with the character and monster models, the lighting was simply admittedly better in SwSh.  Let's Go looked....I dunno how to describe it.  Like they were all claymation?  Similar outcome seems to be the case here, they're cel-shaded but missing the harsh shadows or outlines so they look too soft.

The super-deformed chibi style probably helps them retain as much a 1-to-1 recreation of the overworld and sprites as they were on the DS.  I guess take your pick on preference, as faithful as can be to recreating the last games like this is doing or sometimes awkward upscaling to the full body models like Let's Go did.  I'm not crazy over the look, but I can see why they did it and it's benefits gameplay-wise.  Also they look like little McDonalds plastic toys now, which I'm sure is a boon Game Freak and co. just LOVE the opportunity to sell toys of.

I'm still rather burned by SwSh's whole....everything, so trying to look at this as positive as I can.  I'd say the smart thing to do now is to see what was removed or changed via the fine print before the game comes out.  Something like adding raid dens to Diamond/Pearl, not monumental to me but overall a good thing.  Something like sticking to their guns and having permanent dex removals, this time under the guise of being too faithful to gen 4's roster?  Less good.  Me, my shot in the dark possible good outcome would be if they made some new Sinnoh regional variants of some post-gen 4 monsters to show up.

They also showed Ever Crisis and The First Solider at the same reveal.  Guess we got a FFVIIR battle royale now....for some reason.  Ah well, I greatly preferred the rumors First Solider was gonna be a Sephiroth-focused game before the reveal.

Luke vs Harry Potter was ages ago.  That was a different team, working under different rules, looking for different win conditions and much less research put into it.  Rule of thumb, by Word of God themselves over at Death Battle, Season 1 should be effectively ignored.  Even if they have accurate winners, their reasoning is more likely than not to not hold up.  It was early into the show's concept and simply did not expect to have the lasting power it did.  Hell, if I recall correctly, Wonder Woman vs Rogue was done in 3 weeks Ben said, all by him?  1 week reading various WW comics he had, 1 week reading random X-Men comics, 1 week animating.  Something like that.

....Granted even the latest episodes I take issue with.  It confounds me still how they thought Beerus would stand up to Galaxia, surely they misunderstood how Sailor Moon works?  Anyways, though, Luke and Harry?  The episode was pretty basic and bare bones, but, like.....Luke's got quite the large victory over Harry with his means to win, no?  I mean, deflecting magic with the lightsaber's dumb, but not like it was needed anyways?  Considerably less than Harry's wand.

Ehhhhuhhhh.....'kay then.

I won't remotely pretend I've read all the Star Wars novels.  I think I've read, like, two.  I can't place Yoda's high-end feats simply because in the extended universe, Movies 1-9 are child's play in content for feats.  I'll let others more knowledgeable cover him in detail.  The most I can attribute is Yarael Poof I believe used his control of The Force to his utmost ability and saved a planet from blowing up, but it killed him in the process, and he was, like, better suited for the job than a different Master like Yoda would have been.  But they're probably in the same ballpark; is potentially a planet-level psychic but would kill them in the process.

King Mickey would scale to fighting Master Xehanort's perfected armored Real Organization XIII.  He had to take on all 13 of them at once and beat them in KHIII ReMind.  His power to do so also, like, lit up an infinite number of universes.  I'm honestly not sure of that and high-balling it off memory and trying to discect KH's both confusing plot and just-as confusing multiverse.  But, like, it reached to every World, which contains its own seperate universe (A la Lilo & Stitch "world" is their whole universe of space plus their Earth and galaxy you travel in and whatnot, and each other Disney world is their own universe.  I do not know how this works, frankly, some of the different Disney movie stars are related, yet are sequestered to different universes in KH.  It's weird)

I'm gonna have to go on the hunch that Mickey is stupidly out of Yoda's power range.  In Yoda's favor though, we have no idea Mickey's age is other than vaguely young, and Yoda is, what, a thousand or something?  Yoda's much more experienced for sure.  And The Force allows much, MUCH greater control of most battlefields than KH's borrowing of FF's magic system.

I still imagine King Mickey wins my a landslide.  But hey, maybe Yoda can move the whole Star Wars universe or something.  I dunno.

Big Hero 6 gets into the MCU.  But not Marvel's Big Hero 6.  Disney's Big Hero 6.  Big Hero 6 also appeared in Kingdom Hearts 3 by Square Enix.  Square Enix also did the Avengers.  Square Enix does Final Fantasy.  Final Fantasy is in Kingdom Hearts.  Cloud Strife appears in Kingdom Hearts.  Cloud Strife comes to the MCU.

Oh yeah, the non-meme reaction.  Uh, Big Hero 6 was OK.  A bit overhyped, but expected of a Disney film I suppose.  Kids should probably love Baymax consoling Groot in a foul mood or something.

Did it, though?  At reveal, sure, but as time went on and it got closer to release I recall people starting to see holes in their advertisements.  The initial new cutscenes getting pulled in press briefings but remained present in some ads and the official website I recall caught particular ire.  I remember noticing the issues starting to show was specifically why I didn't get it at launch.  And dodged quite the bullet, it seems.

Moo moo moo moo, moo moo moo moo, moo, moo.

Jesus Christ, 20 years later I can still hear those Hell Bovines SFX.  That's the true Hell of Diablo.

It was perfect timing of me to start up Diablo III again last month, with this also coming out this year.  Greatly look forward to revisiting it and seeing what's new.....and what's broken.  God I hope it's not another Warcraft III Reforged deal.  They got the Crash Bandicoot team working on it, which is a sentence I would never have dared dream to utter 20 years ago....but hey, I sure hope it's good this time around.

I wonder if Jax has lost his arms differently in enough timelines from enough different people to fill out a punchcard and win a free sub?

Is there a particular reason why they don't WANT Raiden to look like he does in the games?  Like, it's not terrible each new interpretation, but it's just weird at this point.  Especially whereas Shao Khan there is all but his MK11 design and outfit cleaned up for theatrical release.

For all the focus they're giving Bi-Han here this trailer, they also got that one shot of him stepping out of a shadow portal.  Sounds like Noob Saibot to me.  I would imagine then Kuai Liang will show by the end to step up as the "good" Sub-Zero, but I dunno, got a lot of MK plotlines to stuff into one movie.

Normally I don't relish in the schadenfreude of others that much, but knowing Dunkey, I'm not surprised to see this Direct was about as anti-Dunkey as you can get.

Problem is, I don't really disagree with anything he's saying, if not to his extreme.  Except putting down Miitopia.  You just don't dislike a game with Darker Lord Jesus as a final boss.  But that's the issue with raising your hopes, I suppose.  I'm not worried about BotW 2 or Metroid Prime 4.  A little confused what the hell they're doing with their hires for the latter, but still.  The silence on all of Nintendo's big titles for so long is a little maddening if you hyperfocus on the faintest speck of news about them.

Mario always looks awkward in these, but my favorite by and large is Nomura's artwork for Cloud getting into Smash 4 because of the clear trolling choices he made with Mr. Game & Watch, Donkey Kong and Kirby all completely failing at adhering to Nomura's unique art style he uses for faces.  It's all there just background fluff for the real star; him drawing TP Link.

I mean, same basic principle is going on here, Inkling Girl isn't exactly divulging from the Splatoon design or anything.

I won't lie, some incredibly small but still there part of the appeal to Sora getting into Smash is the eventuality of seeing the signature KH artwork with the marble eyes being used in crossover art, and knowing they'll pick freaking, like, Villager.

It is not that big of a series.  Looking it up, the biggest entry in it, Chronicles 2 which Pyra here hails from, is only a bit over 2 million and the remastering of Shulk's game is a bit over 1.  It appears to just also not have been expected to have done that well to begin with, has done markedly better in the west than expected and is notably Nintendo-exclusive.  And while not monumental, 2 million sold isn't nothing either.  It has just the right checkmarks of interest is there yet has room to grow that marketing through Smash now would be prime time for it.

Not that sales alone should be a basis, else we would have gotten, I dunno, 2B or Shantae long before more Xenoblade content specifically.  Or you know, Pokemon Sword and Shield's stupidly high numbers and the headache of controversy that baggage would carry with it.

Part of my brain is bugged a bit by their inclusion going against Smash's impetus on being all-stars of video gaming in general, but then the other half points out that they should let Nintendo-exclusive successes get their moment of fame they deserve.  But the characters are very C-tier in Nintendo's long history, so ehhhh....there's numerous third-party characters WAY more regarded that would have been preferred, and just from Nintendo's stock there's certainly more than a handful.  Still wholeheartedly think Midna should have gotten an upgrade out of assist trophy hell.

But I can't be too hard on the game.  Haven't played it, only know what I know of it thanks to Dunkey.  And it really tells me all I need to ever know on the game.

You say that ironically, but the way ReMind and Melody of Memory is setting her up as a potential replacement star....

Besides, I thought the fan base was through with Kairi since KH2, it's all about Aqua since BBS.

Hah.  My favorite takeaway comment from this character reveal I'm stealing for here: "They got tired of adding anime swordsmen so they added an anime sword".

Sometimes I forget Min Min is in this game.  Didn't play Arms, just saw others at it, and only with Flubber.  And tried her out when she dropped, it's.....FINE, but not in my wheelhouse.  I'll stick to Samus and Cloud, thanks.  Arms just also doesn't have that popularity clout to make her stand out more, she's just....there.

Besides Geno, were there any other characters we know Sakurai had intentions for but got the boot for one reason or another?  Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a fairly well-documented one.  We had the supposed Monster Hunter getting dropped WAY early on for actual monster representation as per Capcom's desire and the toolset was likely reworked into Byleth.  Don't particularly recall anyone but I'm not exactly an encyclopedia on the topic.

To be fair, they were expecting the faces of the franchises.  This is essentially what would be instead of getting Cloud and Ryu we got Barret and Sagat.  Prominent players of the game's world, story and gameplay....not exactly front and center of the posters and merchandise.

Splatoon 3 going from hidden lore talking about how the main campaign is a farce and the real story is the post-apocalypse hellscape after a World War subtext a la Dark Souls straight-up opening with bold face text "This is what we really are" gives HUGE Steven Universe dropping the happy-go lucky early episodes into war criminal vibes, and I'm ALL here for it.  Best thing they announced this Direct.  They're gonna have to top going Gurren Lagann fighting the Statue of Liberty from last game somehow, though.  Also dunno how intentional it was but that whole train ride wait and ambiance likewise gave a lot of Spirited Away vibes, and any Ghibli reference and respect gets approval from me.

But I'm glad to see another Mario Golf.  Octopath Traveler's held my interest in getting for the longest time, so "Octopath Traveler but Fire Emblem" will probably also be on my radar.  Skyward Sword HD is.....not a collection of 3D Zeldas, but hey, too many people sleep on Skyward Sword anyways.  I'm getting it.  Famicom Detective Club certainly is a game I have heard of.  Played, certainly not.  But I'll give it a try some point down the line.

Too bad on a lack of Metroid Prime HD Collection.  That would have been viable for coming out the first half this year.  Still have quite some time before lack of Prime 4 trailers becomes suspicious, though still saddened to not see them in the first Direct in quite some time, but the past Primes would have been a good fit to have here.

Oh right, almost forgot the Legend of Mana announcement.  Will be getting that one as well most likely.
