It’s really cool seeing someone try a Clayfighter style! I knew what it was right away

Seriously!

My first thought as soon as I saw Basara's project was hoping that someone with decent sculpting skills would be willing to take a shot at making an actual cartoony clay version of KFM. I never thought it was feasible to sprite something from scratch so well that it'd look like it was actually made in clay! This is superb!

Thanks.

With Huitzil essentially being a single color, I felt that it would make sense to add some shading to him as his third sprite color. Maybe I overdid it a bit. :sweatdrop:

You made the right choice.

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought you wanted his CVS stance in Alpha style (that was my mistake, don’t change he prompt).

Hey RedDragonCats17:
     1. The video you posted won't play, so right now it's pretty much a screenshot. That's not really enough evidence (Perhaps it's glitched or still uploading?).
     2. The sprite-set in the video is his CVS one, not his CPS2 one (unless you're currently mixing both somehow...)

Small correction: I meant to say "shoulder", not "elbow" for the first point.

If you'll take my constructive feedback:
  • Her right elbow kinda looks like it's broken.
  • The arms lack any muscular definition whatsoever. Not saying she should look overly buff or anything, but right now the arms look like fat noodles.
  • The hands need a lot of work, especially her left one. Hands are particularly large in SF3 sprites so feel free to exaggerate them a bit.
  • It looks like she has no crotch. We're looking at her sideways but there's still a gap between her legs.
  • Her thighs are too big. Don't feel obligated to follow Chun-Li's thighs when drawing Jolene. Chun-Li is a special case (look at characters like Elena instead).
  • Her pants are supposed to be a tight fit, but there's this weird wobbly shape going on with with her left thigh.
  • For the right arm: The reason Chun-Li's is shaded after the elbow is because she's tucking her arm close to her stomach. In your case, the arm keeps going straight, so it makes no sense for it to be shaded right at that point.
  • Overall she looks kinda bulky instead of slender. I think you're doing a poor job of perceiving Chun-Li's anatomy below her clothes, which is why you've got that weird right elbow and the lack of crotch (those parts are puffy/covered up by the flap in Chun-Li's sprite).

But yo, what about this one?

That definitely matches the way Megaman is shaded more closely, yeah. The white for his left hand should be the same gray as his background foot, though, since both of them are in the background (unlike his right foot, which is in the foreground).

Again, all of this is if you want to follow Megaman's example 100%. If you want to do something halfway between Megaman and the rest of the CPS2 characters, that's fine too! Don't feel like you have to change it, I just wanted to know your thought process.

Looks beautiful! If you're basing him on Megaman's sprites, tho, shouldn't he have black outlines and shouldn't the leg/arm in the background be slightly darker than the one in the foreground? I noticed his legs have a midtone color, too, but his torso doesn't (Megaman doesn't have a midtone color either, unless you count the slightly darker color for the background limbs).

None of these are criticisms, just observations. Like I said before, the sprite looks beautiful. I'm just curious about your thought process.

Looks really nice, though I feel like his legs could use a bit more light. Some highlights on the top of his face might help as well.

Even when the face should be completely obscured, sometimes Capcom artists make an exception and illuminate the forehead a bit (you can't tell with Kyo and Yuri because of the bandana but you can see it on the side of Yun's hat and Kim Kaphwan's head.

Something I wanted to go more in-depth with yesterday is that the only time Capcom uses white for the eyes is when they have an extra color or when part of the outfit is also white and they're already sure it'll be a light color in all palettes. If not sure, just go with lightest skin color for the eyes (or hair color, if it's Akuma. LOL).

Just my two cents.

Hi @gdk1981

This thread is not for requesting entirely new spritesheets. It's for adding one or two animations to an existing spritesheet and bring new life to it (for example, add an extra move that would allow for a different version of the character to be made).

It's also not for paid work. This is where people can say "Hey, I'll release this character and you'll all get to enjoy it, so please help me with just this one little animation. Here's proof that my character is almost done so that you know you're not wasting your time".

For paid work (especially full sheets), you want to check the Spriters Bounty thread: https://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/the-spriters-bounty-thread-more-details-thread--161795.0.html

Looks nice, but you've changed the proportions. The legs look thicker and the torso seems a bit wider. It'd be nice if it could be used with the rest of the sprites (which would also mean animating it :D)

This is unusable because it's zoomed in. If you can provide a 1:1 transparent gif with the FX separated, that might help someone.

There aren't really that many shortcuts you can take. It's going to take drawing skills, general shading skills, and most importantly, lots and lots of references to ensure you're matching the style.

The image you posted isn't a bad start, but there'a bunch of things you need to adjust. Like Felo said, your first step should be to resize and redraw the character to match SNK proportions more closely. Alpha style proportions are waaay too exaggerated (in part to make attacks more readable). These include but are not limited to: The gigantic hands, the overly puffy cargo pants, and the really thin ankles that end in gigantic feet.

None of those things are elements you'll find in KOF sprites. Additionally, the lighsource in SNK sprites comes from the top right (top left for P2), whereas Capcom tends to light their characters straight from above. That means you have to change the lighting as well.

Last but not least, the references I mentioned. Thanfully, you have A LOT of great examples in this regard. Namely, Ralf, Clark and Marco from NGBC. All of those characters wear outfits similar to Nash's. Also, Guile from SVC can help as well (even though SVC SF sprites can be a little funky, it's the style you'd be pairing Charlie/Nash with).
