Dan vs Blanka has the same issue. I recommend checking every pre-battle intro dialogue (except Ryu vs Sakura, that one works fine) for this error.

HUD gets disabled in Ryu vs Ken arcade match in round 2.
Hmmm.... I've had an experience with HUD disablage at one point while testing, but couldn't pin-point the reasoning.
It has something to do with pre-battle intro dialogue. It plays again when Ken is defeated in round 2.

All I know are direct ports, sadly, latest being The Slum by TheChezSez from a website that shall not be named. There are some more FF1 alternatives that I can suggest, custom FF1 stages by MaestroG, especially Scrap Metal Ring.

I'm not aware of any FF1 slums stages that aren't direct ports, but I wanted to suggest some other Metro City stages instead:

I've been waiting for a decent up-to-date Blaze for a while. This is the most welcome release.
My only nitpick, is that her dedicated win quotes (against Benimaru and Blanka) are triggered against regular opponents.
