PotS

Which games can be credited for introducing (relatively) common fighting game systems?

Feel free to add to this list, only requirement is that it must be something used in more than one game. Also feel free to correct me, I'm sure many of these appeared in earlier games as I didn't research any of it.

No respect for TMNT tournament fighters?
Just 2D games?  The addition of another dimension doesn't count?

PotS

There's some 3D stuff in there. And GameFAQs says AOF is older than TMNT (also I'd be very surprised if such games brought something new to the table).

aLuCaRd_X

Welcome to Alu's world !! :D

PotS

Can trace most of it to other games.
Also should add other stuff like ways to gain power etc, but I'm fed up.

Captain Storm

I would asumme Virtua Fight had the first 3D sidestep.  Dial-a-Combo, I've never seen it outside of KI and MK3.
Here's some more to consider.
Throw break-?
Teching-?, I know Street Fighter 2 had throw teching

mugenxero

More things that should be in there but I don't know where they first came in:

Commands:
mash rappidly *I believe SFII*
632146 AKA half circle X then inverse direction. (big in KOF and GG)
Simultaneous button press.
follow up IE with Sol's Volcanic Viper you can tack on a QCB Kick to get the follow up.
632/412 used a lot in guard point moves
Hold and release SFII CE Balrog/M. Bison's Turn punch

Other stuff:
Negative edge
Tag supers (A la SFEX3)
Feint and feint combo (like Garou MoTW)
Clash (2 hits hitting at the same time)
Just defense
Air blocking
Counter moves (like Geese or Dudley)
Damage scaling (one of the best ways to make infinites less annoying)
Character specific intros
Customizable characters (Ace, RobokyMKII, create a character, etc)
Charge up (all 4 buttons at once in tekken, I think 3 onwards but not sure)
Double jumping

Also I'd like to debate that AOF had the first battle damage, Vega loses his claw/mask!

Edit: Forgot to add low blocking

I have many names,
Chrisis X is my current sig :P

I think it's too specific, having in mind that I already listed half-circles.

QuoteJust defense
Not sure about giving this one to Garou or to SFZ3, will have to check which one was released first. They work in different ways in those games, yeah, but same principle.

QuoteCharacter specific intros
What's the first one ever? Need to check dates on games, but the oldest I remember right now are Sagat VS Ryu in SFA and Terry going "Geese...!".

QuoteAlso I'd like to debate that AOF had the first battle damage, Vega loses his claw/mask!
Could be...

QuoteTag - X-Men VS Street Fighter
I would say Kizuna is earlier than XVSF. Also the WWF arcade games also included 2vs2 and tag battles.

QuoteDramatic Battle - Street Fighter Zero
Would you consider the endurance modes found at Mortal Kombat count as a dramatic battle? If so, MK is earlier than SFZ

Bea

It was possible to guard in Karate Champ.

And counter juggle advantage was first seen at KOF 96. :P
Princess Adora: "My friend saw She-Ra take her dress off in the shower. She said she has an 8 pack. She said She-Ra is shredded."

SF2NES is dead. Long live SF2NES.

Stage Hazards - Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu
Picking Up Weapons - Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu

I remember that in Eternal Champions they had a first fighting game training area which included stuff like buzzsaws and drones.

Eternal Champions also had fatalities that were area specific if you want to put that on your list.

As far as stage Hazards: World Heroes has a deathmatch stage.

And picking up wepons, not sure if battle modes in beat em ups count but you certianly can pick up wepons in those.

XGargoyle

Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu is a NES game, way before Eternal Champions was released.

By the way, juggling was first introduced in MK (1992) which is one year before the release date of SSF2

It's true that if you own a PS3 then all arguments made by those who don't have one are invalid.

I was gonna point out Fatal Fury's plane switching, but I see it's already listed  :P. Anyway, I'm learning a lot reading this thread....+1 for making what seems to be a nice encyclopedia of fighting game firsts, POTS.

walt

I'm pretty certain Evasion Roll was first introduced in KOF 96 instead of 97.
I think it's the same with Run, but don't take my word just yet.

Bastard Mami

this is iirc.

world heroes should be credited for just defense as well as tug of war life as well as "failed grab" animations.

also, one of the kizuna encounter/savage reign games should either be co-credited or completely credited for tagging.

mugenxero

Oh I forgot some major things too!

Character selection-???
Mirror matches (I think SFIICE but not sure)
Faultless defense
Unblockables

I have many names,

Iced

Nekketsu defense ( think that was the name, defending by hitting the incoming strike)- Rival Schools
Angled special moves- X-men Cota
For transforming, I recall a ranma game for snes where you could transform mid battle.

I thought MK was first. eh, I'm probably wrong.

Rote Zaungast

_AOF's winner's pwned face after he gets lots of hits
_Fatal Fury's fatal moves (I don't know if it was from the first FF or the 2nd) when life is under 25%(you can do as much as you wish)
_I recall a game in SNES similar to Killer Instinct...I can't remember very well...where you fight with bare hands, but the CPU versions of chars were given weapons...I can't tell if you are able to wield a weapon too...
_a NES game called Karate or Karateka (two titles in NES that confuse me), where you play as a karateka against another one, the moves are a la Tekken (no combos) it has some kind of character's mode change/stance change, in order to do side kicks or flying kicks...
_Fatal Fury's knock down attack which sends the opponent to the other plane

I think 720 wasn't in SF2, but in other versions like SF2X...
