My Ambitious New Project - Solid Snake! (BRAND NEW VIDEO ON 10th PAGE!!!)

Normally I wait until I am near completion to post WIP topics, but I decided I'd get everyone excited. This will not be a one-off WIP post that you never hear of again - I will create Solid Snake for Mugen. I am a huge fan of the character and the Metal Gear Solid games, mainly the first one. I decided it was time to make a character everyone recognized, and who better to start with than the gravelly voiced hero. Here are a couple of preview gifs, along with some gameplay details:





Solid Snake will be 4 or 6 buttons (I haven't decided yet), and will have several fire-arm related special moves. He will be as accurate to his MGS1 portrayal as possible. Here is a tentative list of his planned special moves:

SOCOM - Snake will shoot the opponent with his SOCOM pistol.
FAMAS - Self explanatory.
Claymore Mine - Snake will set up a Claymore that both he and his opponent can be damaged by.
1-2-3 Combo - Snake will deliver 2 hooks, followed by his strong Roundhouse kick.
Stealth Mode - Snake will activate his stealth technology for a brief period of time, becoming invisible.

There may be more. He will have 3 supers, and will not have a "Level S" Super like my other creations. I am really excited about it. So far, what is done is his walking sprites, standing sprites, turning (stand & crouch) and jumping sprites. I hope you guys look forward to playing as him as much as I do about making him!

PS: Here is where I ask for your help. I need sounds for him. I posted a request in the Developmental Resources section, but I don't think the amount of reads for the topic is even in the twenties yet. Anyway, if anyone knows where I can get sound packs or voice clips for Snake, let me know. Snake isn't Snake without David Hayter's voice and such. I already have the "!" Alert sound and his codec beep. What I mainly need is voice clips. Thanks to any who help!

**UPDATE #1**

Got some good sounds from Psyke and #Shaun. I finished his required sprites. I'd put him at something like 30-35%. There's an interesting story to why I'm making Solid Snake, that will explain why most of his coding is done already. I created a character called The Specialist, a hit-man who can become invisible and can manifest any firearm he's come into contact with. However, throughout his creation, my friends kept telling me how similar to Solid Snake he was, so I decided to turn him into Snake. Now, don't worry, he will be very different, not just a mere sprite swap; I'm not that lazy. I just thought I might go ahead and explain that for when people inevitably wonder how I made him so fast.

**UPDATE #2**

Today I finished all of Snake's basic attack sprites (standing attacks, crouching, air, etc.). I also was able to do his getting up animation, which is a nifty kip-up:

In a couple of days I will upload a video showing off all of these attacks, and maybe more, depending on what I get done. Thanks for any feedback!

PS: I forgot to mention before, in case someone decides to call me out on it, that a lot of his basic move animations are created using Jill's as reference.

PSS: I'm also still looking for voice clips, specifically something along the lines of "Come in Colonel, this is Snake," him shouting "Colonel!", etc. You know, something for his win poses.

**UPDATE #3**

I'm updating to answer some q's that have been posted (if I miss yours let me know), in no particular order:

1. He won't have camo patterns since this is MGS1 snake, and camo was in MGS3 (and that wasn't Solid Snake, it was
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty

2. He will, however, definitely have stealth camo, and it will work exactly like Shaun suggested. It will be a special move, and he will remain invisible for 5-7 seconds.

3. As far as REX goes, to answer all helper/cameo-type questions/suggestions: I probably will not have any. I am considering an earlier suggestion, where Snake hides in the box, and then the Tank with Raven in it rolls across the screen and does a ton of damage. Outside of that, this is definitely Snake and Snake only. I like to think of it in a semi-realistic manner, in that, unlike Jill from MVC2, Snake would not be able to control or just summon his own enemies or what not.

4. For supers, so far I have planned a super where he remains in Stealth Mode for the remainder of the round, a Stinger Missile, a multi-hit martial arts combo (like 10-12 hits, think Charlie's Crossfire Blitz), the aforementioned Tank helper, and maybe one or two more. I'm having a hard time finding a good picture of a Stinger Missile Launcher to use as model to draw from.

5. The problem with a crawl is that I can't imagine it being useful in a fast-paced Mugen fight. It would be accurate and what-not, but no offense to those who suggested it, I just don't think it would be worth the trouble to animate and program. As far as Snake signature maneuvers, he will have a forward roll that will act as a way to get out of corners since it will pass right through the opponent. Here's a gif of the animation. **UPDATE #4**

Sorry I haven't posted the video yet. I'm having a hard time with my recording program. I can't seem to get it to record sound, but it will on my friend's computer, so I will have to use his. It will be uploaded soon. To bide the time however, here are some more gifs of some of his weapon attacks.


The SOCOM pistol.


The silenced SOCOM. This may become the tranquilizer gun. I'm not sure how to go about making it stun them. I mean, I can probably figure out the coding, I just don't know exactly what it would do. I don't want it to be cheap and abusable like Sub-Zero's freeze or something like that. I'm thinking of using variables to work out some kind of ammo system, but then I would want the ammo to be displayed on screen, and I might need some help with that.



These are his two grenade tosses. You don't see the grenade because it is a helper. The top one is a grenade roll that travels along the ground like an SNK-style projectile (however it detonates just before it reaches full-screen distance, to keep it balanced).


FAMAS! The reason the animation is so fast is because it is a Level 1 Super move. It hits several times and deals decent damage. BTW, on all the gun moves, the muzzle flash is an explod, so it will be visible while playing.

Here's where I need some opinions. Since the gun moves have such long range and hit almost instantly due (rightfully so due to the speed of bullets), I have made the two SOCOM moves and the FAMAS charge moves. I just want to know what you guys think of that. I know most characters are roll-command characters and the use of charge moves might disappoint some, but I want to here what you guys think of that particular decision. Thanks!

3 win poses ("Infinite Ammo," "Excellent Snake" Codec, and one of a stoic Snake standing in silence while his headband flaps in the wind (sort of a parody of Ryu's)
1 Taunt
All standard strikes, including 2 close strikes
Stealth Camo
SOCOM Shot
Silenced SOCOM Shot
Grenade Toss (High and Medium)
Grenade Roll
FA-MAS Super
Stinger Missile Super

I had started a little project some time ago to rip all the in-game movie and codec sound bites from the PS1 MGS. I got most of them (some are edited, some are just long, huge wav files that need to be split). Say so if you want them.

Nice constructive criticism 

Anyway, Nice sprite but you might want to work on his face adding details and working on his right glove. I can barely tell the difference between the hand and chest.

I've never got on with the MGS games, although I can see why they're so loved... I must admit, I'm looking forward to this.  Needs the box though, even if it's in a taunt or a winpose... that'd be freaking AWESOME!

He'll definitely have the box in some form, and also, in MGS1, he is clean shaven, and there's not a lot you can do with these little pixels for facial details. Snake has a somewhat big nose, and a permanent scowl. That's about the best I can do with pixels.

Mugen needs snake, looks pretty good so far. About the facial details a little shading goes a long way. Try to add some tone to give face a bit more structure or give him the 5 oclock shadow to hide the lack of detail. Either way though great work on the sprites, especially the sneaking suit. :sugoi:

Sorry, I can't help on the voice clips. But I do have a suggestion.

1 Striker. Which is Meryl.....of course.  :S

I also got a fun Win-Pose suggestion as well.

Once Snake wins, he alerts. Hides in a box, and an army of genomes run passed him.
That would be awesome.

Also, Snakes eyes weren't even visible in MGS during gameplay. (minus the gamecube version)

The only thing I can suggest at this point, is have the codec pop up on screen at the beginning/end of round. It be awesome to have something like, when Snake loses both rounds Campbell  pops up in the Codec... "Snake, what happened? Snake?! SNAAAAKE!"

BTW the sounds on that site don't work Joosho.

This looks interesting... I hope you have more moves planned then just his 3 hit combo for his normal moves.

I like the sound of the stealth mode hyper. Good luck with this. Try to add a touch more detail to the sprites and he needs a mouth

i envy your work.. i wasnt aware of ur creations till after i started my project but..seeing that your a serious spriter and you have good talent in art i cant even judge this snake. Hes wanna my fav char too..like others. This project will give u a huge rep in the mugen community best luck to you. In a way i dont see how people can judge a char that is made from complete scratch, but then again feedback is probably the whole purpose of posting a thread about it lol. anyway...goodluck ur works are great from a artist to another ;)
