New Virtua Fighter leak
https://twitter.com/mbkksstbhz5/status/1764466836718924157
Quote
Virtua Fighter
• It is online and esports focused and has online and offline modes including customization modes.
• There are new characters with a modern art style and character artist.
• It is a game concept that changed many times since 2021 up to now.

• Streaming and spectating implementation is an important part of this title and Super Game concept.
• It is a reboot of the Virtua Fighter series in development by current Virtua Fighter staff.
• It is a title releasing on all major platforms with crossplay and rollback.

This is a Virtua Fighter title that is developed to be a modern competitor to Street Fighter and Tekken with esports concepts and mechanics that are similar to current Street Fighter and other fighting games. It is a concept that evolved a lot.

And there is all new main story and side stories with brand new characters.

And there is an evolution of ranked matches that is similar to modern fighting games. This is a title that is focusing on scaling with the player and their play styles when they play online.

why does it have to be a reboot?! why can't it be just, ya know, Virtua Fighter 6?!

and why do they have to add a story mode to a Virtua Fighter game?! not having an in-game story is part of Virtua Fighter's identity! give it a story mode, and it's no longer a Virtua Fighter game

god, that's about as garbage of a decision as removing insta-kills from Guilty Gear Strive was

That's the most nonsensical criticism I've ever seen. The reason Virtua Fighter didn't have a story is because games in general at time if it's first release didn't focus on that, but as time went on, that changed on other franchises. And that lack of story is probably why Virtua Fighter was dead for so long to begin with, it was just generic character archetypes with very little to tie them up. Tekken stayed strong through it's story, nonsensical as it was, and DoA kept itself alive through fanservice and got shit on as soon as it tried to drop that. Virtua Fighter may have revolutionized the 3D fighter genre, but once other fighters had that + something to set them apart, Virtua Fighter had no leg to stand on.

No, the reason Virtua Fighter was dead for so long was because it simply wasn't Sonic, and Sonic (and also Puyo Puyo and Like A Dragon) was the only thing Sega cared about for a long time.

Hell, by the time the first Virtua Fighter games got released, other fighting games already had a bigger focus on story (such as King of Fighters and Street Fighter Alpha), so the Virtua Fighter games leaving the story out of the game itself was a deliberate choice.

Virtua Fighter isn't the kind of game that serves you the story on a silver plater. You have to WORK for it by doing your own damn research, and that's what made Virtua Fighter stand out, and a dedicated Story Mode would take all of that away.

Like it or not, a substantial story mode is an important part of the package now.

We're not in the arcade days anymore when you could chip in a few quarters and play for about 30 minutes.  It's expected that purchasing a home release for 70 bucks or so is going to afford you more content.  Street Fighter V did not do that, and it was part of the reason why it had such a poor launch, and part of the reason why that mistake has not been repeated.  Sega does clearly intend for VF to be one of their flagship brands, so it's unlikely that they'll release a low budget meat and potatoes fighting game package for a discounted price.  They already did that with Ultimate Showdown, and it's great, but they seem to be looking to release something of a much higher scope.

A story mode will not deprive Virtua Fighter of its identity.  The only thing that could do that would be drastic changes to the formula.

Evo Japan is probably where we'll get the announcement. With a new VF and a new Fatal Fury in the horizon and with SF6 being such an amazing game, this might be my favorite Fighting games generation ever.

Partly related to that news: SooA, the "Queen of KOF" got sick after the past SWA tournament and got into hospital. She's getting better, but probably will miss EVO... I know about her thanks to Twitter and her KOFXV gameplays and she's just awesome, I hope she get well soon

Rest in peace, Toriyama-san...

  • Build it, shape it, by my will.
This is just so surreal seeing these old fighting game IPs somehow being resurrected in 2024 even if it's just balance updates.

Johann from RotD was such a meme in Japanese MUGEN at one point.

Don't expect any of these to get ported. From what I've heard, it sounds like exA-Arcadia is very keen on keeping their stuff exclusive to arcades.
That's why they're a mediocre company and these "re-releases" will be a massive flop.

Arcade exclusivity in 2024 is genuine insanity.  Literally sending these games out to die.

That being said, I suspect the upcoming RotD Neo port will have the same balance changes.

There's a bit of sense to it because Japan's arcade scene is still vaguely ripe, but there's still something monopolistic about this whole thing. Prices that are apparently in the quadruple digits in terms of $ doesn't help much either.

Needless to say, I'm not gonna be too surprised when revivals for the likes of Power Instinct or Variable Geo are exAclusives too.

True to an extent.  It can't be overstated just how badly the pandemic hit the already vulnerable Japanese arcade industry (seriously, look up all the game centers that went under, the numbers are STAGGERING) but there's still enough revenue to justify releasing games there.  Considering that these releases are all very niche enthusiast titles there's a chance that they see it as a safe enough investment compared to big publishers releasing internationally known sequels for a global audience knowing they'll see a return on it.

Ex-A has actually been flirting with the idea of going stateside for a while, they've been bringing their cabs to conventions and events.  But even if they do commit to that it's gonna be very difficult for most to get a shot at playing their games.  You don't really see arcades or game centers in the US anymore, and when you do they're mostly barcades that stick to the big names.  It's kind of a self defeating prophecy if you live outside of Japan, since the nature of fighting games means you'll need to keep playing which is going to be impossible when you have only one weekend to fight other people, and no access to the game for the rest of the year.

I'm strongly convinced EXA is a front to a money laundering operation. Their business model just doesn't make sense.

They buy dead game IPs that 30-300 people play for free in fightcade, repackage it for thousands of dollars and then we are supposed to believe arcade operators are really bulk purchasing these and their customers are making Black Friday-lenght waiting lines for the privilege of playing romhacks of Breakers Revenge and Rage of the Dragons?

I guess they don't see it as a loss because of how niche the IPs they're working with are.

Honestly, the romhack bit is a good point.  If someone REALLY wanted to they could very likely just hack the roms for these games to reflect balance changes, provided there's no new visual assets (ie new sprites) which is highly doubtful to begin with.  I'm sure that would not end well given Japanese companies' history with this sort of thing (ie French Bread vs UNIST modders) but it does kind of expose the problem with the entire thing.
