The Senri Project is a pet project I started with a friend back in March 2014 (whereas planning began in August 2010). In the original stages of planning, the game was going to be a 2.5D fighter in the vein of Project Justice, however, due to time, skill, and technological limitations, the game was reduced to a pile of notes and 8-bit demo music.
Later on, a story was created; the game was to be about demigods in a feud that could alter the state of the universe.
This was also dropped.
Come March, I decided to mess around with some sprite art, and found the style I'd use: after finding Fighter Factory, I began work on the project through MUGEN! Many changes have been made in the past 9 months, and the original story was dropped twice and remade. It's currently getting remade again, now with a new, 3-man team. Information on the story will be shown below.
Being that the game will be made entirely of original characters, I'm hoping that this project will become a great fighting game! And, so long as I have the resources to do so, I'll continue working as hard as I can to make the game fun and fair.
Set in the modern age, the game's story revolves around 19 year-old Rin as she attempts to recreate the world to her own twisted specifications: in the past, scientists experimented on humans and animals to attempt combining their DNA and creating superhumans with animal-like strength, reflexes, and agility. However, the project partially failed and created a new type of humanoid - a nekomimi (cat-eared creature). Over the years, the DNA from this sole being was passed down and down again, diluted more and more, until the present day, where the result is what the scientists of old had strove to achieve; they had become humans with advanced physiology, with a near-identical appearance to normal humans!
Humans became afraid of these new demi-humans, and began to treat them as lesser beings, causing many of the demi-humans to be poor, homeless, or simply put into servitude, even being traded around between people under the guise of 'adoption.' Most of the demi-humans accept their fate, but others attempt to stand up and fight back.
Rin is one of these people.
Vexed by society's view of her people, and the apparent complacency amongst them, Rin decided she would use the same science employed by the creators of the demi-humans to change the entirety of humanity into demi-humans as well, ensuring their liberty. However, this plan failed, as she could not find the missing link that would cause the project to succeed. She would eventually find a girl her age, Kitty, that bore the specific link she needed, as Kitty herself was a genetic anomaly: she and she alone bore the strand of DNA that could complete the alteration. But, Rin was unable to procure this through normal means, and decided to go on a scientific pilgrimage to study further.
Rin's disappearance drew the attention of several of her schoolmates, who began to search for her, finding no trace of her whereabouts. But, it turns out that Rin found a new manner of achieving her goal: the occult.
Another young woman, Lala, was aware of Rin's disappearance. Lala and Rin have had bad blood in the past, and she knew that Rin would be up to no good. Then, almost as if on cue, several people received word that Rin would hold a "test of skill" in a short while. Knowing that this was a setup to Rin's wicked schemes, Lala quickly employed the help of many of her friends, and encouraged them to call their own friends, telling them there was to be a fighting tournament, hoping that they can work together to defeat Rin and thwart her attempts at changing the world once and for all.
Rin's trump card, however, is much, much more than anyone could bargain for... And the brave souls that enter her gathering will be entered into the fight of their life!
The Senri Project is a 2D, 1v1 fighter that runs on MUGEN 1.0 at 640x480. It'll feature:
- A 100% original cast of at least 14 planned unique characters (As of this post, it has 3 fully-playable characters)
- Super-cute, colorful, super-deformed graphics inspired by Neo-Geo Pocket Color fighting games
- A grand total of 12 palettes per character (With some being homages to popular characters from other media)
- At least 10 different win quotes per character, with character-specific quotes in the works
- Plenty of hard-hitting moves, with command normal moves, special moves, and super moves
- A completely original soundtrack composed by myself, with unique themes for each character
- An easy-to-learn, footsie-based, 5-button combat system with room for mastery
- Potential for balance patches and additional characters
Here, I'll list any playable characters so far, with a small quip about each one, and their standing sprite, under the spoiler.
Spoiler, click to toggle visibilty
- Lala Yoshida - Real name: Mari Yoshida. A 19 year-old former gang member from the streets of Tokyo, Lala's cold exterior belies her sensitive, caring interior, although she never smiles. She seeks out Rin to get revenge for the scar over her right eye, given to her by Rin herself many years ago before leaving for the United States. Fights using any tricks she's learned from street fighting, as well as a variety of attacks using her sharp nails. The protagonist of the story.
- Kitty Akiyama - Real name: Katharine Akiyama. An 18 year-old girl in 12th grade, Kitty is a rambunctious, friendly girl that loves action. She gets word of Rin's disappearance and immediately skips school to confront her longtime friend. Fights using a combination of gymnastics and any cool moves she's seen in anime and video games, with overly-dramatic names, to boot. Speaking of, her boots give her kicks some extra oomph!
- Midori Yuki - An 18 year-old girl in 12th grade whose family adopted Kitty and raised the two as sisters. Midori is an overachiever and a perfectionist, and strives to be better than everyone at everything. Learning various martial arts and ascending to a high level in Bajiquan, Midori's teacher tells her to continue perfecting her martial arts, so she decides to begin by testing her skills against anyone entering Rin's competition.
