I'm trying to make a sprite in the style of something like sf 3 or alpha. I'm still kinda new to this (just brought aseprite).

Sorry. The correct place to ask for this help in any case would be the Graphic section. This section is for introducing yourself. Welcome!!!

I'd say you could start using even MSPaint. It will allow you to learn the basics(and creating advance stuff too! :D ). My advice in this case, as spriter, is to find a style you think it might suit you. SF3 is HARD, even for seasoned spriters, so you could start with something more basic, as SFZ. Even KoF style!
