I personally like having unlockables in games.  There's a certain sense of satisfaction that comes with knowing you managed to accomplish something and getting rewarded for it.

This.

And it kind of annoys me when everything is handed to me up front.
Okay, so I have everything available, and all I have to do is play arcade mode.
To get what?
Arcade endings.

Neat.

Oh, but there's online play!
...okay, but what if I don't have access to online? What would I do with the game then?
Play arcade mode OH JOY.

  • SNK is life
there is always the snk method, pay six bucks to unlock all icons and locked chars.
Actually it's a Capcom method they copied from the SF3:3SOE, since OE was released first.

Not to mention unlocking Billy was piss easy and you could do it in a single playthrough, whereas unlocking Gill is not.

Unlocking characters is great if the method to unlock them is fun and rewarding.

I agree with this.  It doesn't feel as rewarding when it becomes a too much of a chore to unlock them.  Especially if the characters are otherwise normal characters.

A good example for me comes from 2 games in the same series.

In Firepro wrestling for Saturn, there were around 130 wrestlers available right away with around 20 hidden.  The hidden ones were based on retired and legendary wrestlers.  Yuo had to go through victory road (defeating all wrestlers by going through all the federations in the game), but it actually felt fun in that game and the unlocks were very rewarding.

In the US version of Firepro Wrestling for GBA, there were only 10 initially avaialable from 200 in total.  You had to beat a wrestler in Victory Road to get him, but this time it was random, and you weren't guaranteed to get a wrestler through one playthrough.  The recent Naruto thread reminded me of this.

Going through arcade mode over and over again to unlock stuff is the most boring thing ever.

Usually you also get the endings besides the extra characters. I like doing that for some.

I play fighting games for multiplayer.  I don't like having to grind through arcade with every single character on the roster just to unlock certain characters.  It's even worse when there's a tiered unlock system like vanilla SF4.  I play Akuma, so I had to beat arcade with everyone on the goddamn roster just to use him.  And what's worse, is if I play on another console I would have to do it AGAIN due to Capcom's copy protection system.

Fuck unlockable characters in fighting games.

Tekken 6 gave you arcade endings and customization pieces for doing story mode offline or online with whatever character you wanted.

in the Tekken and Soul Calibur games i had much fun playing it trough with them all, first i learned some moves already, 2nd i got to know more about the characters via cutscenes and endings ..those were especially great in nearly all namco games

the character endings could all be archived playing normal vs fights online or offline as well though, they are time or number of battle based

KOF: Maximum Impact 2. Nuff' said 8)
A lot of cool characters to find (but Armor Ralf, ugh), unlocking them don't require just finishing the game... and it's free!! You don't have to buy DLC stuff :D

Rest in peace, Toriyama-san...

for that reason i miss a ps3 memory card. However, werent people which didnt have anything unlocked in a fighting game worthy opponents even? My friends who played fighting games had even all mvc2  characters unlocked...i mean..playing against people who dont play a fighting game not serious ..sucks.
That depends on your friend's preferences. But I'm talking from personal experience. A friend brought over MK9 one time since I don't have it(And I'm not going to be getting it now) and I've been interested in trying out Cyber Subby. Of course, Cyber Sub is a locked character unlocked through Story mode and it does take quite a while to get to the point where he's unlocked, time we didn't really have.

It's annoying and it isn't fun to go through all kinds of hoops just so you can use your (potential) main.

Honestly, I want all characters unlocked already (one should be enough if it's done). IMO Multiplayer and Singleplayer should be separated. Some people wants to buy fighting games only for the online experience. Others prefer to go Singleplayer either because their Internet connection sucks or because they enjoy more fighting against the AI, using Versus with friends or just complete the Story mode and other modes the game is carrying.
