I'm still on a version of the nightly build from roughly late September and I heard that the nightly-build updates from October onwards made some changes to triggers that removed one in particular (getplayerid IIRC) that prompted POTS to update some of their characters to adjust to it, and I'm nervous to update it because I'm not sure what else in terms of characters/stages/etc. might break if I catch up.

You don't need to update all the time unless you want to make use of some of the new features. You can also back up your current build (minus... char, stages and sound folders I guess) before updating. Updating now will save you that trouble when the stable 1.0 comes out though.
You can help with Ikemen GO's development by trying out the latest development build and reporting any bugs on GitHub.
