Recently i reinstalled my operating system
my computer had some kind of virus or something
or so i think
the computer would be making the sound like it was busy doing something
even though i closed everything up it would still make this wierd sound
it would run on for hours
finally trying to prevent any damage to my computer
i would do CTRL-ALT-DELETE
and i would close explorer.exe
everything on the screen would disappear and the noise finally went away
then afterwards with the noise gone i would bring back explorer.exe
sometimes the computer would freeze up and i would have to do CTRL-ALT-DELETE again
and kill the explorer.exe just to refresh my desktop

the whole time i thought it was a virus

Anyway after reinstalling the system
i noticed now my computer was not making any sound at all
i would take an eternity to acomplish any task
typing a word
openning up a browser would take 5 minutes
it would take forever to install any program
it just would not move at all and on top of that would not make any sound at all
i tried going into directory services mode and still would have the same thing happen

then i tried any of the safe modes
and it was working perfectly
instead of making no sound it was now making a sound like it was busy doing something again
and even when i stop all my tasks it would continue on like that with the sound

this time when i try to stop the explorer the sound is still continuing like it is busy

i think it might be a hardware problem

can someone tell me what is going on

  • I got a PM.
This XP? Check system usage. See if anything is using up resources.

HP Compaq dc7100 SFF (PQ893US)
Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
3000/800 MHz
F41
28/1024 kb
1024 MB DDR/400 MHz/Dual Channel
00118580A3A4
786C1v01.05
2UA50200BN

I checked the cpu usage
something is eating it all up
i turned off all startup programs but it only helped me to log on to my computer without freezing
but when i started using anything it jumps to 99 usage again
I thought that this problem was caused because of my partitioning of my harddrive
but even when i reversed it the problem still persists
i am right now running in safe mode

  • I got a PM.
Ok now look at the processes under the task manager. Find any using over 60,000 K and tell us what they are.

I chose that number because a simple internet browser uses about that much, so in theory you will only be showing us things greater than a browser

actually it might not be what we suspect
when i checked again the cpu usage was low and it was still acting up
ocasionally the numbers jump up by alot
its runs normally for like 25 seconds then the whole computer freezes up then unfreezes
it keeps doing this
also as it freezes all the sound in the computer shuts off
what ever it was doing it stops completely
i dont mean audio but the sound of the computer running
it shuts down
i can only run this stupid computer in safe mode
i looked through the processes but they all seemed close to the number you said
the only thing that was over was when i was running firefox
it was in the six digits
but even when thats shut down it makes no difference
so its probably nothing to do with the cpu usage or processes running
even before i had this problem the computer was making a sound like it was busy or struggling
i dont know what to make of this

So, did you stop and think about how helpful your subject line may be? This is a help forum so obviously you post here to get help. Something like "Virus problem?" would help the reader identify your thread, and already give a general idea of what you are having trouble with.

If everyone used subject lines like "COMPUTER PROBLEM NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", with no less than 14 useless exclamation marks (yea I counted them), the thread index would be an indistinguishable mess nobody would like to look at (or help).

Please take the extra second to think of a helpful subject line, next time you make a topic :)
