I don't know if this is the exact place to ask this, but I'll ask anyways.

I've haven't really done anything M.U.G.E.N related in months, besides color separations, but that's more sprite based, IMO. I want to get back into M.U.G.E.N stuff like screenpacks, characters, rosters, and other stuff. So, what would be a good start? I want to start with an empty M.U.G.E.N and edit it from there. Then after that, edit a few characters. Afterwards, make my own characters, and so forth. Is this a good way to start? How would you guys go about it?

well dude the only thing what you need to know is the easy examples in every mugen basic...
you also must know what every creation in mugen contains (for example screenpack have sff and system.def files)
ugh...
maybe you should read more about in docs...
but I want to be on help...
everything depends from inspiration,so you should start with screenpack and stage...(that's how I started to learn basic things)

okay let's get started:
for example you have a some difficult program with a bunch of codes and so on,but mugen have something very easy than difficult script in program...
in screenpack scripting you have a different sections(title, select screen...)
I suggest to open some screenpack (like one from winmugen for good start)...
everything is typed on english and it have a example how to do that...
so you should check it out...

like stage (use kfm.def stage for example) elecbyte has typed something about that,so you will be able to see everything about coding and stuff...
like in character (like kfm character) too, elecbyte has typed something about coding and stuff...

so for good start use basic examples in kfm and start learning...
