I was wondering(sort of), other than the gameplay what makes certain fighting games stick out and why??? what draws you to these games and not others....Games like Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, and others...what sets them apart??? when they were new what made you say I want to try that game if not just for the mechanics??? anything other than graphics???

K.O.D

Interesting characters and storyline are the soul of the game while the gameplay is the heart.

Without the soul, the game is blandly robotic and without the heart, it's foolish.

Monday-Night-War

What makes the characters interesting??? their artwork??? their stories??? both???

jok

i think it would have to be each characters personality and back-story rather then them just being pallet swaps

Nero D.

Both of course.

If a game has great artwork and interesting storylines for characters with full personalities, that will definitely be one of the main driving point of the game.

Honestly, who wants to play a game with terrible artwork and boring characters.
i cant count the reasons i should stay

one by one they all just fade away...

^^okay...what makes the stories pop though??? like what makes them special...anybody can have a story...what makes certain characters' stories so much more powerful and fan-capturing??? I'm really interested in you guys' ideas...

originality and logic it cant be a mediocre love story or a crappy  plot with extreme amounts of holes

Each character having there own storyline in the game.
I don't really like the whole idea of having a lazy cutscene when you beat the final boss but, something more deep. Say like each character has there own path, many different custscenes and special rivalry intros happen and maybe different enemies.
I've never seen it happen much though, only in a Tekken game and SFA3.

Also, I think character designs and movesets are important.
Having a variety of characters to choose from who aren't exactly the same is refreshing and gives more replay value.

Kinda strange but I woke up today and her hand was on my ass cheek
I won't suspect anything though I'll take it she was sleeping and didn't notice
you should have flipped over slowly

Monday-Night-War

Unique meaning completely different fighting styles and moves that all follow their own stories??? yeah that does make a game really interesting......my next question  is: what is your dream fighting game??? what features does it have??? or what features need to be implemented into today's games???

Nero D.

@Nnaajj:

Play Guilty Gear XX brother.

That game has so many forking paths and cutscenes and alternate endings for each single character. That's a game with a story.

Actually ArkSys, and Ishiwatari by extension, has a nack for games with fully explored backgrounds for each character.

Well I don't know what my dream fighting game would be but, I think games today should have a much more unique roster. They should focus more on not including every retro character which has a big fanbase. Also most of the cast must have some sort of relevance to the story.

Foobs

I don't care about the story, as long as the characters look interesting and/or feel unique.

Monday-Night-War

How many characters is the minimum for a fighting game??? If there's a small roster...how should the game compensate???

Bastard Mami

a sense of style, take aof 1, it is a horrible fighting game because it is experiment based rather than gameplay inspired; but it has the whole "martial arts movie from the 80s" style so well that you can't help but love it.

Epic Winnery

Go play Neir and Black(?) Rain

indeed

"Bad News" Hoffmann

i sure dont play mortal kombat because the gameplay

its the story and the characters which draw me into that series often

games like melty blood could look better as anything else and have supreme gameplay but i would stay away because its in my opinion total boring story and also boring character design.

the interesting characters and their moves and styles are what makes a fighting game interesting for me

snk rules in that corner.
