I'm not saying that people who takes games seriously are tourneyfags, nor that article (at least the way I interpreted it).

Don't ever reference anything from that fucking awful website, nor use any of it as fact in any type of real debate or argument.

Street fighting is all about analysis, prediction, and reaction. That's it.

Like the last tournament I attended: YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO REMAP BUTTONS!!!! PUNCHx3 IS CHEAAAAAAAT!
Fuck them, I played on stick so no need to remap. (even with that, people said I was cheating because playing witha  stick gives me advantage).

do some research into small tournaments before you go to one in order to avoid horseshit like that. hardware bans for stuff like turbo button and macros is fine, but banning shit that's built into the game is overly excessive. quite often, especially true around where i live, you'll find that the people running tournaments like the one you described have half of their friends in the brackets anyway and are just looking for easy money for themselves.

This is why Smash Bros. is laughable to most folks. I mean, it makes sense to play on Final Destination with no items, I can see that since then it makes it more about character skill. It's just the reasons people.... you know what, never mind. It really shouldn't even be discussed.

And on that note, TempesT, that article actually is pretty correct.... for smash bros. That's it, though.

Hey, now who's taking things too seriously?

The site can be shit, the article can be written in sarcastic way, but isn't "tourneyfag" used to denote people who plays by its own rules and despise people who doesn't follow them?

Uhhh what? It is an awful site and it's the worst possible thing you could reference if you're attempting any type of actual point to what I'm saying. Sorry that you take that site seriously at all, don't be so naïve.

Tourneyfag is a word that people created so they wouldn't feel bad if they weren't good at a fighting game. ("people who play this game on a different level than me/are better at the deeper dimensions of the game and talk about it to or try to teach other people are tourneyfags lolol") and it turned into a defense mechanism whenever someone was called a scrub, then again scrub is used in pretty much every game I've played to denote people as bad at it.

Renzo: For Smash Bros., yes. In a more general sense, it can mean:

tourneyfag (etymology: tournament + fag)

  • Someone who plays any game in a competitive (usu. tournament) setting
  • Anyone who always plays solely for the purpose of winning and nothing else, as if they always had something at stake

That's how I see it, anyway. Improve this if you want, but if you're really against the use of the word, you shouldn't care enough to want to "improve" its meaning, anyway.

the tournament scene for smash is much better now than it was 2 or 3 years ago. usually the strictest rule involves not using items, which still takes away from the game itself. but it seems like a lot of the newer tournament organizers are taking a page from the older fighting game communities and keeping restrictions mostly to hardware. you can also say the change is because the earlier tournaments were heavily ridiculed for being so strict.

JZ: Ok, now that makes sense.
