Characters in New Age Fighters

In the older times, we had characters based on Fighting Arts, Nationality, older forms of Japanese Fiction, as well as Western Fiction, etc.

But now, we have character archtypes of current Japanese Fiction and a certain lack of muscles.

There are also a certain increase of female fighters.

Concerning Aquapazza, one poster said something like "Another schoolgirls game, where the fighters don't actually look like fighters." This makes me wonder, What makes a character a "fighter?"

Many would say those that are actually prepared to fight, go in a fighting stance, had experjence in combat... some of the characters in today's fighters/brawlers don't even look like they have even been in a real fight.

Starting with Guilty Gear, what do you think of the New Age Fighters/and Brawlers(anything with a PVP Battle Mode like Urban Reign) and their characters?

"Bad News" Hoffmann

Hmm..Guilty Gear as a "New Age" fighter?

Its first part was released in 1997 already..and the character design didnt change really in the later titles

Fighting games with characters looking skinny and dont have moves based on martial arts exsist much longer..they werent popular here though (DragonBall,Ranma games as example)

But i get what you mean, in many new japanese fighting games you see a lot manga influences now..the trend went to sometimes indeed skinny characters which dont look like martial arts fighters at all

Those series like arcana hearts, melty blood and Aquapazza are good examples i guess..but i wouldnt honor these series really as "New Age Fighters"

Hell please no..they are a subgenre within the general fighting games genre ..nothing more..nothing less

Take a look at the popular fighting game series which didnt take much influence and designs from mangas.

Super SF IV, Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive Dimensions, Tekken 6,  MVC3 even KOF XIII have their roster mostly filled with muscular fighters, with movesets mostly taken from popular martial arts

Nay..please dont describe those games like GG, Aquapazza, BlazBlue as "New Age" fighters. Thats a name for that genre it doesnt deserve.

Well, The sequals of Guilty Gear were more know than the original. Some big "booms" and "changes" don't start till 1999.

Also, what would you desctibe things like "Melty Blood" and "Arcana Heart" as?

You know, I know some mascot fighters that are more "straightforward" and"focus" than recent... uh, "fighting games?"

Mgbenz

Weren't you the same guy constantly talking about realism in fighters?

Thats simple.

As games i wouldnt even play for money.

I made a mistake.

I really meant something more simple and straightforward. Something more believable. Something.

I just happen to be a big fan of Neo Geo Fighters, that's all.

Being that you would be familiar to skinny fighters

Kyo....Iori...Shingo...Benimaru, K`

Many SNK female characters dont look like they could fight at all....Mature and Vice, Blue Mary etc.

Mechy

How does blue mary look like she cant fight at all?
"Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign of a diseased mind."

"Okay, okay. So you put a Nazi on the Moon. Fuck you, Moon."

I thought I saw some muscles within Benimaru. And with Kyo and Iori, the have been trained to fight. also they can summon, channel, and master flames. K's excuse was having Kyo's DNA.

And I have always seen Mary Ryan as a fighter to me. I mean, she has learned "Sambo." She does look ready to grab her enemies and lock them into a 'hold."

"Bad News" Hoffmann

On the left, the Sambo fighter Megumi Fujii

Blue Mary looks attrative, but skinny and not trained at all to me

But whatever, the topic was something different or?

It is not exactly "to have big muscles", but to have a character design that, when you look at it, it tells you the character "can fight". For example, when you look at Ryu, Honda, etc, you can tell they use some kind of martial art. Other examples, from SNK: Gai Tendou, Raiden, Hwa Jai, the Todohs...

For comparison, when you look at Rufus, you can tell his design doesn't hold up for what the designers meant him to do; he was supposed to be fast, athletic...and morbidly obese...? Or when you look at Kyo (early garb)...you can tell he is a school boy (biker in the latter garbs). Had you not seen his moves in game, only his design...could you tell he is a fighter...at all?

Cheapohater absolutly clarified and pointed out what i meant when i refered to Kyo, Iori and even Blue Mary

They look normal, not like people which could fight

In tekken you have King, Craig Mrduk, Paul, Law

and you at first sight that they can fight

but take a look at Asuka or Ling Xiaoyu

I used to think like that in the past, but if you bypass the character design you will find a pretty solid fighting game (and to be honest the character design is really tolerable, I only hate a handful of the chars like Len, Hisui or Kohaku).

I started playing it after Act Cadenza Ver. B was released and I dont regret it at all, I even got my friends to play it with me... and they are the kind of people who despises this kind of design (And like Metal music XD).

Well, to be fair their fighting style are not based on brute force so they would be able to fight aswell IRL.

"Bad News" Hoffmann

I played Melty Blood, both parts which were released for the PS2, also Arcana Hearts 1+2..and even fighting eyes or what its name was for the ps1....

i am sure the gameplay is solid and in some of those games even similar to the quality of some of the better SNK fighters but i really dislike such characters and dont want to oversee it..alone already because there are enough other games with rosters i like

You have a point with the fighting styles of asuka and xiaoyu, but look at other tekken characters like Hwoarang..he looks skinny but you see him and just know...ahh..thats the taek won do guy.."he can fight"

I think none of you played/heard about Buriki One, aren't you??

heard, yes, played sadly never

CF7

But what does Buriki One has to do with anything...?

Anyways. I forgot to add that there is no problem with the fighting games that do not follow the "Fighter Culture" (this is more of a matter of taste, actually). There is only a problem when a design that does not follow it, is added on a fighting game that is known for following it.

Not exactly...Xiaoyu's design (with chinese dress) is decent; remember, her style is graceful, and so is her. If anything, Lili is the "eyebrow raiser".

Yeah, you really don't know about Buriki One, too bad being a SNK fan :P

It's about a tournament where every real fighting discipline representative fights against other ones to demostrate which one is the best. There're a great character design and a lot of charismatic fighters ;) I've the luck of playing once in arcades and it was totally great, too bad wasn't released outside Japan... and MAME guys hasn't emulated yet :'(

"Bad News" Hoffmann

Thats something i knew... but..what does that information about Buriki One has to do with the topic?
