stage camera problem

I have just downloaded some stages but when I load them the starting position of characters is too high. Then I reduced the zoffset parameter in the .def file and the characters started at a lower level but now the camera starting position was too high and I can only see the heads of my characters. then I came to knew that startx and starty parameter changes the starting  camera position and I tried to change starty but the camera still stays there. Changing startx makes the characters start from a little left or right depending on how you change it but the starty parameter isnt workingat all. I wanna lower the camera starting position but cannot, plz help.
