Have you ever met people who only knew Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat?

I saw some gameplay videos of Pokesho's Type: Wild, it kinda reminded me of early King of Fighters titles, yet many commenters typicaly compare it to Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. The latter has NO resemblance to Type: Wild, other than the fact that they're both fighting games.

The kind of people that make you ask/question, "Have these people ever player a fighting game other than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat?"

Fighting games have been a niche market since the late 90s. People compare any 2d fighter to those two games because, for better or worse, have been by far the most commercially successful fighting game franchises in the western world for 2 decades.

Expecting people to know less known fighting games like Galaxy Fight or Breakers Revenge would be like expecting you to know about some obscure underground metal bands.

Well, it just annoys me.

You're a fan of fighting games, so you know about them. People just talk and compare to what they know.

When you hear about a metal band, the obvious reaction if you don't know much about Metal would be to ask "does it sound like Metallica or Evanescence ?", while Metal is much more than that. But since you know near to nothing about the subject, you can only compare to what you know.

Same when talking about any subject which has its fans, which everybody knows about to some extent, but which very few know about extensively (cars, motorcycles, weapons, wine, RPGs, FPS, gastronomy, fashion clothes, etc.)

Stop playing rather unknown games, that way you wont be annoyed anymore because you just know a bit about the games everyone knows

be like the mass

Or just talk about Breakers Revenge etc in circles like MFG

Just know enough to get by in a convo should it pop up. Ie: like how the majority of people who have never played Portal will parrot "The cake is a lie!" or mention the companion cube if it comes up.

If I struggled to the end of my determination, to the end of my way of life with my followers, if the result is ruin, then this ruin is inevitable. Grieve. Shed tears. But you cannot regret.

That's what Peter does, aka "Ryu the guy with the white clothes and red bandana, and Honda the fat guy who got fat for a reason".
But it's not working... ::)

"Doom-like".
Think about it.
I'm not totally sure of what I'm about to write, but while this "Doom-like" term was true and used like 5 to 10 years ago, with games like Hexen, Duken Nukem 3D and such, isn't it now generally replaced by "FPS" ? I certainly haven't read the Doom-like term in quite a long time.

Byakko

Yeah, but I'm talking about the principle. Doom wasn't even the first game of its genre, but most people only knew or cared about that one, and called the whole genre "Doom-like" for quite a long while because it was even easy to say, and you were sure everyone would know what you mean. Be happy the fighting game genre isn't called a Street Fighter-like :P

Hyper Smash Bros Melee 5 HD and Soul Calibur 7, the new Street Fighter-like games ! :gonk:
Yeah, I see what you mean, I was thinking about nowadays, while you were talking about the principle.

Saying "Street Fighter-like" is kind of like genericizing trademarks.

Yeah, me too.
My Mugen Wish List would include protagonists, mascots and other iconic characters with everything they have brought straight from their source with little or no editing.

I don't mind people not knowing about fighting games. A lot of competitive games are like that. Not everyone knows about rts's other then Starcraft.

asia_catdog_blue

But they should at least spot some form of difference. There are many know fighting games that showcase stuff that are not apparent nor possible in Street Fighter, like air combos or running.

It's even more baffling when people thinks 3D roaming Multiplayer Battle Royal titles are similar to Super Smash Bros. Did they even take a good look at SSB? I understand them not knowing what Power Stone is(or was), but seriously!

I understand where your coming from, but it's the nature of the beast. Any competitive game is going to required to learn in order to find out what it's really about. Be it a fps, a rts, or a fighter. And so, since only those who have played the games extensively enough know what they are about, it's only natural that those who have not played them and learned what they are about will base their understanding of them on stereotypes and the handful of games in the genre that have broken through to mass appeal.

That's so funny because evanescene is so not metal at all, lol..... It's more pop than anything. At least what I've heard from them.... But there are a lot of ppl who think they are "punk rock" b/c they listen to Blink 182 or some bubble gum crap that is nothing more than the Backstreet Boys with a blue mohawk, then when you play them some real stuff, like Rancid, The Clash, Dead Kennedies, Black Flag, etc, theyr all on about how it sounds to gutter or w/e (I shit you not I've had someone tell me this before)... Of coarse I don't categorize myself as a punk or a metal head, I don't really do labels, but I like to think I know my music though... I mean everyone has different tastes, some people like pop and bubble gum (and that's fine, it's not my thing, but hey everyone has a right to their opinion, even if I don't think they have any tastes, hell maybe they think I don't have any, w/e) but evanescene from what I've heard isn't metal, nor is lincoln park, or 3 Doors Down, or any of that mess, pantera would rip them to pieces and leave them crying in fear and cowering under a table lol....

My bad though, I'm not trying to derail the topic, just wanted to throw that out there.

My only problem is when game developers know little about fighting games and then call their shitty 2D hack n' slash similar to Street Fighter.

Yeah there were a ton of b list SF and MK wanna-be's, to be honest Neo Geo started off kinda similar to SF, with AOF and Fatal Fury, but they managed to break out and create their own separate identity, which I think deserves some respect.. They got their own seperate game play, animation-style, unique chars,  etc.. I mean one could theoretically argue that Ryo is a total rip off of Ryu, and in some ways that could be accurate but really, Ryo isn't a Ryu clone totally. I mean he's very similar, but he has a somewhat different personality..... His combos and moves are different too (except for the fireballs and dragon punches), he's more likely to come forward and hit something with a combo, or a flurry of up and down punches into an uppercut or dragon punch. And he has no hurricane kick.

But then again I don't mind if chars are based on other chars, because think about it, how many Bruce Lee carricatures can you find in fighting games? Liu Kang, Fei Long, Kim Dragon, Marshal Law, then you have Balrog taken from Mike Tyson, Axel Hawk taken from George Foreman, Muscle Power taken from Hulk Hogan, Johnny Max taken from John Madden, Robert Garcia taken from Steven Segal, El Blaze taken from Rey Mysterio, tons of Ryu-based chars, Pai Chan taken from Chun Li, Lei Wulong taken from jacky chan, Feng Wei taken from Jet Li, do we really need to list them all?

I mean I don't even mind if a game is a SF or MK rip off to some extent if they can bring something unique to the table, something that sets it apart. But many of them don't..... But some do though....

Revolution often comes through several evolution's. X-Men children of The Atom was Street Fighter Alpha with super jumps and dash momentum and some other stuff. Marvel Super Heroes and Mvc1 was Xcota with the magic series. Mvc2 was Msh with assists. ect. There are no new things under the sun. Everything we enjoy in fighting games and games in general has been built off the advances made by past games.

Except when it's not.

There's always *something* a creator can add, to spice it up a bit, possibilities are infinite so.... I loved how KI took the best aspects of SF and MK (the big 2 fighting games at the time) and brought them together in a totally new package... It had the hyper combos and a colorful cast of chars like in SF, but with the violence and the midieval back drop of MK. Jago was based on Ryu, TJ Combo was based on Balrog, Glacius and Cinder may have been based on Sub Zero and Scorpion, Eyedol may have been somewhat loosely based around the concept of Goro. KI was also the first (that I know of) fighting game which displayed a female as one of the two main protagonists of the game (their main 2 being Jago and Orchid, who are brother and sister).

MDD

My cousin from Canada that just came down thinks fighting games are childish and that real men play COD.

I lol'd.
